Debojit with his family after winning yesterday

In a rocking finish to the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge last night, 29-year-old Debojit Sinha edged out 17-year-old Vinit Singh by a slim margin of 0.2 per cent votes.

In the grand finale held at the Andheri Sports Complex, Sinha — from Silchar in Assam — walked away with the trophy and a posh flat, thanks to a last-day flood of voters from the East zone.

Debojit attributed his success to composer Ismail Darbar, his mentor in the show. ''Though Darbarji never showed it, he was always tense for me,'' gushed the winner. He did not forget to thank his mother for the triumph.
Debojit bagged 2,68,12,151 votes, against 2,66,78,407 for Vinit who is from Lucknow.

Flood of votes from East

While the North zone sent in 1,56,000,00 votes, East zone pushed in 2,95,000,00 votes. And when compere Shaan announced this midway through the show, the crowd went silent.

Their favourite, Vinit, was not going to make it. A few minutes later when Shaan announced that the South zone had poured only a handful of 21,000,00 votes, the writing was clearly on the wall.

Vinit was kids' favourite

Vinit, who was trained by Himesh Reshamiya, was clearly Mumbai's favourite, especially with the ladies and kids.

A seven-year old went up to Vinit and asked, ''Kyun hara?'' The tears rolled down Vinit's cheeks, but he did not reply. When the child insisted on an answer, Vinit guessed, ''Tune vote nahin kiya hoga.''

Both contestants had started nervously. Quite a few of the songs they chose were from Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan starrers.

Among the celebs who were at the show were Preity Zinta, Dia Mirza, Fardeen Khan, who appears to have put on oodles of weight since his marriage, Kunal Kapoor and Johny Lever.

Jajit Singh, Ghulam Ali and Pandit Shivkumar Sharma and Udit Narayan were also at the show.
