I am not sure about the theory, seems pretty right, what you wrote.

I just attempt to sing, till everyone sushes me down😆

Thanks musicmuse. Although, it still requires approval from our forum's music mahagurus😃 .

I mostly sing without thinking too and like to think I have an intuitive understanding. But I like the theory for its own sake.

IDK if anyone had felt this before... but personally, I guess I can sing male versions of a song waaayy easier than the female one's.. ?
Somehow, in male songs, I tend to open up to the fullest and sing with a lottt of ease, and female songs need me to control my voice a little bit - to achieve that range and all.
Soo.. I do wish to see Sniti sing a female song.. or did she?! I didn't watch the episodes last week... hmmm, so, yes, I'd like to see her singing a female song.
BUT, it really doesn't matter, Sniti's a great singer! :)

Can you explain more clearly? What does that mean? And like I said, let me explain my experience. When I try to sing along, I try to match with the scale(not sure of the correct term) of the original singer. When I try doing this with Lata's songs for example, I have a problem if I try to match her. However if I start lower, I have no problem hitting all the notes even if they go high. But when I start low, the song doesn't sound as good as the original. Now, I don't have this issue with male songs. In my mind, this is not the problem of hitting high notes. It's just the kind of voice I have that's somewhere in between the deep male voices and the shrilly female voices(eg Lata, Shreya).

Hey SP, I can't explain more clearly. Trying to do so, I'll make a fool of myself 😆 -- I don't have much knowledge of the technicalities or the terms. 😔

It is just that I've always found male singing higher by listening and by trying to sing in the original scale. This experience is so decisive that I've rarely thought I should need professional knowledge to be sure. Incidentally, I've come across some authentic texts and some folks with technical know-how, too, who've confirmed my assumption that male singers are normally more comfortable in higher scales or notes than their female counterparts.

Lata is an exception.

@xobile thanks to you too.

I went to a few classes for Carnatic music a long time ago and if I remember from what the instructor told me then , it is this( if something is wrong let me know)

the male sruthi is generally between 1.5-4.5( the way it is defined in carnatic)

the female ones are usually around 4-6(not sure about the higher one).

Now these numbers refer to the sa note( in the middle octave). So, I would be most comfortable hitting the sa at 5-5.5. . Once you start there, you go to the higher sa and you can also go lower from the base sa . Now going higher and lower is defined relative to your starting point. So every singer has a comfortable starting point that allows him to sing the higher notes with ease. However, it does not mean the singer can start only at that starting point. For example, I could start at 4, 4.5, 5 or 5.5. However, with some of these starts I won't be able to hit the notes in the lower and higher octaves.

What I was referring to when I said my voice is closer to the male voice is in my mind, referring to the starting point. In the sense that my comfortable sa falls around 4.5 or so.

Now, what does it mean that male singers are more comfortable in higher scales than female ones? Obviously I am guessing you are not referring to the absolute value. Because as far as I understand there is no absolute value. What I understand by that is male singers can have a wider base of starting points and still sing the higher and lower octaves at these different starting points.

While female singers, on an average, don't have such wide starting points to choose from.

So if the MD determines that a song should be sung at a particular scale, then you need a singer who is able to sing comfortably at that scale while being able to transverse through the higher and lower octaves if the song requires it. So in my understanding the absoluteness is imposed by the music director creating a song. It is not like the song cannot be sung by a different singer choosing a different scale but that the MD determines that the character of the song is best accomplished at his chosen scale.

That was a long paragraph and I guess I confused everyone including myself😆 but it would be great if someone who knows this stuff better could throw some light.

Looks like you're an exception, too (as are Simi the pagal ladki and Varsha the bull ji). 😉

I appreciate your taking pains to explain. :)

PS: I did not ignore your post, just didn't peek into this site for a couple of days.

Omg, Sniti is really awful in a romantic duet After listening to this romantic no. of sniti I am sure no heroine would ever prefer a playback. Good that Sniti restricts herself to the male songs, she does well in it & has her own style of singing.

Bhai saab, itna jaldi mat karo. Dont rush to conclusion based on one performance only. I think Jhoote naina bole has been sung by a female and that too by heroine Hemamalini in the film Lekin. Thoda sabr karo.
