"And then he ran into his ex-girlfriend at a movie premier..." her stringer was rattling off the latest movie gossip and Baby was lost.

Malvika's revelation had come to her with mixed feelings of both tribulation and exhilaration.

Kabir Sir was an eligible bachelor. There were some rumours about him getting involved with a couple of women, but nothing was corroborated with fool proof evidence. She thought of asking her sources about him, but then dismissed the thought. It seemed too silly.

She casually wondered about him. He must have been about 35-40, though his appearance belied his age. A fit toned body, carefully sculpted features and the shock of thick black hair turned away from a high forehead...were they gelled or soft as silk? Her fingers itched to explore...

"Care to share, Baby?" Her reverie broke with that and she hastily lowered her hand. Manav was standing next to her table. She blushed realizing the fact that her actions and expressions had been like an open book!

"Oh nothing Sir..." She stood up in haste, but he wouldn't have any of it.

"Oh come on! No need for these formalities. This is just your first week, and I am sure you are settled here well. I just came to ask you for coffee. Care for some?"

"Coffee? At this time?"

"There is no right and wrong time for coffee. And you will learn that fast in KKN! Come let's go to the cafeteria!"

She allowed herself to be led by Manav, hoping that it would be a simple event and she would be back on her seat within no time. And she didnt know how mistaken she was at the instant!

Kabir was in a foul mood as he dressed up for the 9 pm bulletin.

Oh this formal wear was a pain, made worse by the sweltering weather of the national capital. And the air-conditioning had to fail in its job from time and again, causing small rivulets to run from his hairline to his collar. The situation was further made worse by the makeup he was forced to wear.

Choke me now...he cursed himself as the final knot on the tie slipped in place. But he had to do it, as per the company rules. One could not afford to be slack while on air!

A beep from his mobile alerted him about the time. He quickly walked to the studio to get miked.

Malvika's voice floated to him over the mike.

"OK Kabir..we go on air in 5,4,3,2,1..."

"So how are you finding it here, Baby?" Manav was all politeness as he handed her a steaming mug of the expresso and settled down in the opposite chair.

Baby took a while to reply, nursing her mug in her hands.

"Fine, Sir..just that the pace of this place is too fast. I am slowly getting used to it now.."

"I would agree to that. Any news channel needs to be on its toes always. A delay of even 15 minutes can cost the channel dear...as they say, its yesterday's news!"

"And for that the Channel Management also has to be competent enough... Look at Kabir Sir, he is so well informed! And his sources are so impeccable!"

Manav took a sip before commenting on this one.

"Yes, Kabir is good at his job. Only for one thing though..."

Baby's antennae tingled with an unknown anticipation.

"And what is that?"

Manav tried to look disinterested.

"His personal reputation is not good!"

Baby was taken aback. This was not what she had expected. Manav continued, obviously enjoying her discomfiture.

"There are enough rumours in that direction. He is a womanizer. Someone who exploits woman working for him. No, don't mistake me. Ladies love to work for him. He is a charmer, he makes them feel as if they own the world and once their usefulness is done, they are discarded like trash!"

"I had some other opinion about him. In fact, he is quite famous in the media circuits...it is considered an honour to have worked with him! "

"He just gets things done. How and what are the repercussions, his bosses are not interested. Hence the fame and the reputation!"

"I just can't believe it?"

Manav smiled to himself. The fish had taken the bait.

"His personal life is a mess. Tell me one thing, Baby..." He leaned forwards, his tone dripping an odd mixture of sarcasm and sympathy, "If that was the case, why is he still unattached? Such a successful reporter...a charmer...stinking rich...?"

Baby was about to say something when her mobile beeped.

Her first weather bulletin was going to be aired in five minutes!

Something was definitely wrong with the Air Conditioning of the Studio.

A small trickle of perspiration had warned him subtly about the same. Kabir had continued to read the news in an non-chalant fashion, painfully aware of the fact that any movement to wipe it off would be termed as scandalous. By the end of the session, he was sure that his undershirt was drenched to the core.

Kabir had wrapped up his bulletin and high tailed it to the green room, loosening his tie on the way. He was sure that he was stinking with body odour despite his daily routine of deodourants.

Ohh darn this Air conditioning! Flinging his tie, his shirt and undershirt in rapid succession, he had realized just in time that the door was wide open. And before a new scandal would emerge, he had reached out to bolt the door, the same instant as Baby chose to enter, and that too with a high speed.

Well, not the same instant. Baby's entry was a clear one minute before Kabir's hand would connect to the door. And the speed with which she had been walking did one strange thing: it drove her in his outstretched arms; and next: the momentum sent him sprawling on the floor with her in his arms.

Air whooshed out of his lungs as he landed a bit unceremoniously on the green room carpet: she was in no better shape either as she stared at him from a distance of a few inches.

Nothing moved for a minute.

Kabir gently eased himself free from Baby's hands.

Baby tried to regain her posture and was largely unsuccessful. Kabir's efforts to regain the vertical were nullified because of that.

A scream brought them out of the reverie. Kabir looked up to the horrified face of Ananya standing in the door of the green room, her expression murderous.
