As I sat there watching the mother of the year throwing her mentally challenged son under a bus, I couldnt help feeling...happy. Of course, then I come to the forum and find people having the exact opposite reaction. So I sit there, shame faced, reading everyone's posts, and feeling embarassed for my odd reaction. And then I think...hmm.
No one is remembering something the CVs have consistently done with Sumer---They have given HIM, and not Samrat, an actual personality. While I think Samrat is basically a cardboard cutout with a constipated expression that they move from location to location, propped up behind Maithli -- with Sumer, from the first scene, first intro, they have given him a character.
And like it or not--that is not a fully black character--purely because he has been under his mother's control for so long, he is basically her minion. Not her partner. Left to himself, he really has only two desires in life, both grey shaded, not endlessly black--he doesnt give a damn about anything family-oriented, and he wants to go to Jaipur. He is loyal to his dreams, and to his mother.
I hope the actor forgives this analogy if he reads this, but he is like a badly brought up dog, frankly. The puppy is not a very smart creature when its young, and it absorbs what it sees, and if its been trained to do harm, it will harm anything and everything its master points it to. It will snarl and snap at anyone (like Rudra /Paro / Danveer) who threatens its bone (Jaipur dream). AND it will not understand when its being used for evil--because it knows nothing else but to listen to its owner.
The CVs have in one episode emptied out the entire bag of Sumer's past wrongdoings. Ones I almst forgot about--like the kidnapping track--came out today, in front of the entire family. The only thing that Sumer has to himself is the money hes borrowed against the Haveli--which had nothing to do with Rudra or Paro because it happened before they showed up.
Nothing else is left. Sab paap saamnei aa chukein hain. Why would the CVs do this, as well as the careful character building--even the comic moments, the funny dialogues--if THIS son was not going to finally finally show some growth? I mean, if they needed an ally for Paro later--Samrat is much more suitable. But they chose to focus on Sumer, and they did so from the beginning.
There are two things that pleases me about this track. One is that Sumer's mind-control from his mother--and you cannot deny he loves that vicious piece of work--well, that love, that mind- control is broken. His expression when he realized what was being done to him made me feel a little sad for the guy.
The second thing is--he is genuinely slightly stupid, and CANNOT plan all this. And there is no way Rudra cannot see it now. I mean, he kidnapped the wrong bhabi. He is the scapegoat for some heinous things, and yes, he assisted in evil--but he knows no better. Now that he has been betrayed in the worst of ways, there is only one way for this character to grow--UP. Unless the CVs decide to bring Laila in through him, and he and Laila join forces, there is no reason for him to really give into another evil track against Paro/Rudra.
He cannot have anything concrete against Rudra or Paro--they did not betray him. He has nothing against his father, brother or Maithli--they dont know anything. If he has an enemy--it is Mohini. And the glimpses of a pretty dumb, misguided guy with a tractor wala dil, and the plans to build a Paro-Mahal--that guy, is still there, washed clean by his mother's fake tears. He is standing nude before everyone right now, as exposed, and as vulnerable as a child would be, if its mother gave it poison instead of milk. He truly wanted to save her, he was truly frightened she would be taken away. And then, his dawning comprehension about what she was doing...it was pretty powerful.
Knowing Paro, knowing she will see the mother's act as the evil betrayal it is, and knowing Sumer's pain for being so betrayed--I cant help seeing Paro reaching out to him now. I dont know, maybe she is too focussed on all things Rudra-- but I would think very good thoughts of her nature if she cared for another hurting person, after Mohini is exposed, no matter how misguided that person was.
We might be seeing...dare I say it...a friend for Paro, a potential future supportive figure. Maybe a grey character.. but not an evil one. And one who is capable of making decisions un-influenced by a viper parent. So far, RangRasiya has consistently surprised me with HOW they have first created, and then changed their characters (Dilsher's role from first week till now, anyone?) And they don't waste their time with useless character building that goes nowhere (like IPKKND's NK or Payal) .
I have hope, baisas. I like Sumer's earrings. I like his crazy shirts. Maybe now, he will have a redemption of sorts--and I'll like his actions too. BUT: Oh yeah, one thing-- if he marries Laila..I'm out.
