Part 92 A
BA 138

The first class seats are unlike any other. It's an alcove of sorts with fully reclining seats. On occasions when a person needs to sit the leg portion doubled up at a table. It felt like a pea in a pod, with enclosed walls on three sides, and a 21 inch TV monitor and choice of hundreds of movies and TV shows. Always on Internet, and a stewardess available at the beck and call.
They started to serve even before the plane was ready to taxi from the gate.
Her husband wore the classic blue jeans and white cotton shirt with shoulder straps and sleeve straps teamed with tan suede on his feet.
Khanak was wearing a pink draw string capri in cotton and a maroon silk full sleeve kurti and a thing sandals with marrons and pink beads around the ankle
Her arms were covered and most of her legs were also. She did not want to appear dressed like the other newly wed women Ritu would say flew out on their honeymoon
BA First's lounge was a private, elegant and quiet at Chhatrapati terminal.
She waited for Shaan to complete the check in formalities, they got top priority from the moment they stepped into the airport and walked over to the counter.
Personal concierge service had ensured they did not have one concern
Her parents and Ritu had come by to the airport, none from his family had, Pradeep had driven them to the airport. Sunil had left for Taipei mid day on 3rd. Mangal Kunj had taken on a "Khanak" quality since the morning. It was mostly quiet. The wedding melee had finally settled down. The overseas family were busy shopping or making appointments with people they had to meet in the next week or so.
Prad and the cousins were around at night when they left for the airport at 10.
He looked serious or sad, Khanak did not know
Prad: You guys should go after we return!
Khanak: Hmmm
Prad: Its been great knowing you Khanak! (extends hand for a shake)
Ends up giving her a hug.
Khanak: You are wonderful, funny and engaging
Prad: But not yet engaged! (bad joke!)
Khanak: I don't have cousins your age, nahi to main baat karti
Prad: Nor a sister!
Shaan is standing near one of the couches, on his phone listening to the conversation. The whole family is in the living room. Dadi is seated comfortably.
Eyeing the couple every few minutes to note any worrying vibes
Khanak: Are you thinking about studying in Singapore?
Prad: Yes, did Shaan tell you?
Khanak: No! I gleaned as much when he came to get you two nites ago
Prad: He thinks it a brilliant idea.
Khanak: Then you should do it
Prad: I want to do my MBA in india. I would get a wonderful exposure to education in an emerging economy'' BRIC you know'
Khanak: Have you applied here? (sincere)
Prad: I have, we'll see!
Khanak: I have you on FB, so we can see each other's posts?
Prad: You never post anything, nor have any pictures up.. less than 20?
Khanak: I am lazy'' on weekends, I sleep or cook'' my friends are peeved also.
Prad: You have 28 friends? I thought there was a minimum! (laughs)
Khanak: Funny! To tell you the truth 20 I really don't know much! I don't see them regularly!
Prad: Gosh! You are awfully quiet, That's why!
Khanak: Umm'.. may be''.
Khanak: You have my email ID don't you? Likhna mujhe, aur apne friends ko Ahmedabad zaroor lekar aana, I will make all travel arrangements for Gujarat!
Prad: will you go with us? (winks)
Khanak (blushing) Umm' I'.. I don't know at this time. I could try.
Shaan still texting on the phone "We would if it was a one or a two day trip Pradyun!"
Prad: You have to teach me Gujarati! Remember?
Khanak: oh ya! Zaroor'.. mera matlab, pakka
Prad: Will you say "See you later" in Gujarati for me?
Shaan is angry and jealous, when she looks side ways she can note the muscle clench in his jaw
Nandu Maasi: Khanak my son is funny don't mind him
Shaan (under his breath) If only he was funny!
Khanak wishes him in Gujarati
Ray and Ujju were tearful, Khanak feels a lump in her throat. She loves them. She cant imagine coming back to an empty house
Dadi urged Shaan to plan trips to both places, Shaan had nodded obediently.
The first class cabin crew interrupts her wandering thoughts to offer a snack. Khanak is too tired to eat. She declines, so the lady walks away to the next guy
Khanak is waiting for the turbulence to begin. She cannot bring herself to relax. Her husband is on his computer.
Khanak: Umm' you think its safe to walk around?
Shaan looking at her smiling "Ofcourse! Go walk all over"
Khanak: Sach mein?
Shaan: haan khanak'.. do you want me to go with you?
Khanak: Nahi!
Shaan: Do you need anything to drink, you look really tired.
Khanak: Thanks! (offended)
Shaan: khanak''. You are sad, upset and fearful admit it
Khanak: Umm '. Mmm
Shaan: neither of the three?
Khanak: Just '' umm'. Afraid''..
Her hands are clenched, she holds her curvy arm rest wall. There is over three feet of space between her and her husband's cabin.
Shaan: Do you want to check your email?
Khanak: nahi!
Shaan: watch a movie?
Khanak: nahi!
The plane bobs as he climbs, she clamps a hand over her mouth
Shaan is amused
Khanak: I told you! (she hisses)
Shaan: what are you afraid of? (calmly)
Khanak has never really thought of it that way'' "um'. I don't know'."
Shaan: Its not as easy as you think!
Khanak: oh! I get scared very easily!
Shaan laughs, "Nahi who baat nahi Khanak! Its not easy to crash a plane...They do their jobs well! The planes and the Captains"
Khanak shuts her eyes and then opens them to look at her watch'.. "Abhi 8:20 minute hain?"
Shaan: You should relax, recline your seat and try to get some sleep?
Khanak: Umm'
He gets up from his seat and walks over to hers, helps form the seat into into a bed position.
Shaan: Go brush your teeth (handing her the BA First leather pouch with the travel essentials)
Khanak gets up reluctantly. Walks over to the bathroom, reappears in 15 minutes.
Her hair is tied high. She is wearing a gold hoop it bobs each time as she walks he notices''.
The cabin is totally quiet except for the drone of the engine. The lights are muted and food is being served individually. Shaan has a glass of wine on his table
Her bed is made, she sits and looks out the row of three windows on her side.
Khanak peers down "Hum Ahmedabad paar kar chuke honge na?"
Shaan looks at her solemnly for a few and as an after thought " Haan Khanak Ahmedabad guzar chuka hai"
Khanak: Hmmm (softly)
Stretches her legs, he drapes her with the soft blanket, turns off her light
Just when he is about to turn around mouthing a soft "Good nite"
Khanak gently touches his red string tied right wrist. She never seeks him voluntairily, he is stunned to see her do that..
Shaan: Khanak?
Khanak: Umm... I mean... If its... only if actually Its really turbulent, is it OK if I wake you? (softly kinda embarrassed)
Shaan: You can wake me when ever you feel like Khanak! (reassuringly, comfortingly...smiles)
Their eyes meet and stay connected for a few minutes.
