Shaan picked up the picnic basket which Sachin had already made ready for them and beckoned Khanak to follow him outside to where stood a red Jeep with an open top. When she hesitated again, he lifted her in to the passenger seat and strapped her in.

They didn't converse much as Khanak held her breath the rest of the way, her brain trying to solve this riddle. He drove back on to the Mumbai- Pune highway, passed through Lonavala with its trademark 'Chikki' stores, and continued east into Kamshet, a sleepy village located in the picturesque hills of the Western Ghats locally known as the Sahyadris. He took the exit towards Pavna Dam and then almost right away turned into an uphill rough unpaved road on which they drove for another half an hour, the bumps at times so violent that they made her aware of every bone in her body. Then he parked the vehicle at a small turn off, which held a couple more cars and proceeded to walk up a roughly hewn narrow path holding his hand out to her, saying that they were just 10 minutes away.
Khanak let out her breath in a big gasp, when they came upon what looked like an elevated football field, which overlooked the highway and a river whose name she was ignorant of. Shaan grinned at her, his excitement clearly visible on his face,
C'mon! You are going to fly now.
He ran towards a small group of people who were standing apparently waiting for him besides what looked like a huge wing with parallel lines of rainbow colors. A well built young fellow who Shaan introduced to her as Rakesh, struck a smart salute in greetings and handed some gear which happened to be the harness, a helmut and boots. Without consulting her Shaan helped her in them before putting on similar gear himself.
I, I don't think I can!

Following his instructions, Khanak gripped on tight to the rod with Shaan's hands on the outside resting on the brakes right next to hers. Then with some more encouragement they ran as one into the wind, down the slope till they felt the classic lift and right before the edge took off. The current was strong enough to carry them effortlessly, making Khanak give a loud whoop of joy!
She screamed in ecstacy, At last I'm doing it! Shantanu I did it! OMG! I'm alive; I'm like an eagle in the sky!
Shaan too laughed out loud, rejoicing in her happiness and his. He was relieved that he hadn't lost his instincts and touch for it had been a long time since he had paraglided.
After the initial euphoria, they settled down to enjoy the scenery which was just amazing from their perspective. The verdant hills were lush, with a smattering of low clouds. The roar of the tiny waterfalls which formed only during the monsoon, the pristine mirror like stillness of a huge lake which took on the blue of the sky and helped them track their progress as they flew over it. But best of all was the pure air and the feel of the wind which blew on to their faces and plastered their clothes on to their bodies.
Khanak shivered.
Are you cold? Shaan enquired at once concerned.
No, I was just wondering if I could do this again at a whim, fly like a bird.
Well you could! I'll make sure of that! Taste the future my girl! He said his mouth close to her ear, his body like a shield on her back. Your happiness is all that matters.

He kissed her on the neck in response and they continued to float for the next half an hour without realizing the passage of time when the wind suddenly shifted and it grew chilly.
I think its going to rain, let's turn around and land.
Khanak concurred and let Shaan guide them back towards the flattened area of land especially prepared for the landing. Fighting hard against the shifting current he was finally able to get them down and they ran to a stop.
Khanak couldn't help jumping up and down hollering Shaan's name out loud as he struggled to remove her harness and his own. He couldn't help laughing himself, her exuberance being so infectious.
Big fat drops of rain came lashing down on them as they ran hand in hand towards the jeep which unfortunately offered little cover. But Khanak didn't seem to care. In her delirious state she forgot herself as she jumped onto Shaan's back putting her arms tight around his neck as he struggled with the canopy.
Leave it honey, let's get wet!
And they did get very wet indeed!
Shaan was thankful that at least The Jeep was in good shape, well maintained and with relatively new tyres because driving in these conditions downhill on an unpaved road was proving to be quite a challenge. He sighed with relief when they reached the highway but was there faced with heavier rain that he had to almost drive blind. Finally when they reached The Retreat it was close to 10pm. They both felt miserable and cold being soaked to the skin having had to drive without any top on. But they were back in one piece at least.
Shaan saw Khanak's teeth chattering as he anxiously hurried her inside the house. He felt guilty for having brought her here this time of the year when it was practically certain to rain everyday. But he had been so into taking her on the joy ride that he had acted on impulse and the sheer bliss on her face was reward enough. He just hoped that he would have the presence of mind to take adequate precautions next time.
Where is Sachin?
He's off at 7. Don't worry he should have cooked something for us.
Do you think we can drive back home now? Khanak asked worried, and at the some time excited.
Sweetheart! I don't think I could risk driving back now. You saw how all the roads were getting flooded and this bungalow is located downhill! I'd rather wait till morning. I don't want both of us to be stuck somewhere in my small car. I'd rather stay here where it is safe and warm.
Khanak looked at him, her dark eyes clearly mirroring her trepidation.
Darling! He said taking her in his arms, I know what you are worried about. Don't be, I will try to be the perfect gentleman, I will not take advantage of you against your will and I'll inform your parents. Satisfied? Now go quick get out of these wet clothes!
What??!!
I mean, He chuckled as he led her to one of the bedrooms, take a nice hot shower, so you'd stop shivering. Your clothes should be dry by morning. Until then wear this, He said as he pushed her into the bathroom and handed her a thick bathrobe.
Khanak smiled at him as he kissed her gently on the forehead and walked out closing the door.
He was right, the hot water not only stopped her violent tremors but soothed and relaxed her aching and stiff muscles, so she felt quite in a languorous mood when she stepped out of the room, the bathrobe wrapped snugly around her. She walked downstairs and not finding Shaan went in to the kitchen where she saw that Sachin had indeed left quite a lot of freshly cooked food for them. But before anything she needed a hot cup of tea.
As she put the kettle to boil and was searching the cupboards for the ingredients, she felt a pair of strong arms wrap around her waist and lift her off her feet. Laughing, she looked behind to see Shaan grinning cheekily at her.
Let me down, I want to make some tea!!

Khanak blushed and pretended to get busy at the stove, her pulse going haywire as he kept his arms around her and pulling her collar aside and flicked his tongue across the base of her neck.

Okay, so you are going to make some chai for your hubby?? Go ahead..I want it with the special ingredient! He let go of her waist suddenly and she stumbled, for she hadn't realised that she had been leaning on him.
It was proving to be very hard to do anything while he watched her every move, leaning casually over the counter, tiny water droplets dripping from his still wet hair and snaking around his temples, but she managed somehow. She poured the tea out with shaking hands and asked him about the sugar, to which he responded by grabbing her again and holding her trembling body achingly close to his chest,
I don't need any artificial sweeteners when I have your lips to savour..And then kissed her so hard that it left her gasping and her soft lips felt bruised and battered. But the pain was unbearably sweet and she kissed him right back with an equal amount of fervor, making him wrap his arms around her even tighter.
Oh my Angel, let me make love to you! He said as he gently pushed her back towards the counter and his hands were inevitably drawn to the ties of her robe.
She desired him equally but a tiny voice of warning escaped from the nether of her brain...

He smiled gently as he let her go and picked up the tea tray, Lets have some tea,shall we?
She followed his broad back out into the living room where a bright fire was already casting warm shadows around the room while soft Jazz music played in the background. As he set the tray on the coffee table, she spied her clothes laid out to dry on the ground in front of the fire along with his and somehow the intimacy that implied brought a warm scarlet rushing to her cheeks. She wanted to cry...

Yes? He said as he handed her a cup, Sorry it has gotten cold.

He took her in his arms again and propped her chin up with one forefinger, You don't have to say that. I can see it your eyes. I love you too; truly, madly, deeply.
I want you to know that today was perhaps one of the best days of my life when I literally felt like a free bird, no like an eagle, something that I've wanted so badly all my life but never got to do. I really thought I died and went to heaven. She said and started to sob, hiding her face in his broad chest.
There, there, don't you do that again, he said as he wiped her cheeks and gently kissed her eyes. I want you to live and go to heaven, I'll try my best to make your journey with me as beautiful and as uncomplicated as possible. Please do trust in me.
Khanak nodded into his chest and looked up suddenly curious, How did you know what my wishes were? You don't have ESP do you?
Shantanu smiled the corner of his mouth lifting up ever so slightly, Where have you been writing down all that you have wished for all these years?
What? My diary..Palak? Khanak gasped, shocked.
No! She's not to blame, she didn't look beyond that first page, your secrets are all intact!
Except my wishes.
Yes, except those, I'm planning to fulfill all of them. Khanak you are so sweet with such simple desires! Just like I've imagined you to be! He said as he gently hugged her again.

No, I was just kidding! The wait is becoming unbearable for me!
She laughed shaking her head and mussed up his hair fondly, Awww! My knight in shining armor, don't you worry your bride will be yours soon. Intezaar ka phal meetha hota hai. She said and when he cocked up his eyebrow delightedly amazed at her boldness she suggestively winked and pulled him towards the settee.
Shaan was thrilled to discover this new side of his soon to be bride, when she sat him down and settled herself next to him and coyly nibbled his ear lobe while she ran the tips of her fingers over his collar bone, making him grab for her again. But she dodged deftly away, and when he protested she said,
I said Intezaar, sirf aur thoda sa, ab chai peejiye, bahut thandi ho gayii hai!!

They both laughed relieving the tension and sat in companionable silence, staring at the flames, sipping the cold tea. Khanak rested her head on his torso, blissfully comfortable in the fact that she had found her soulmate,and promptly fell asleep. Shaan smiled snuggling up to her, caressing her forehead gently, and whispered,
I promise that I will never let you down,
We will be together forever
You will be the beacon to my ship
And I will be the ocean to your river.
