I think it depends on certain tradations...
Some places celebrate Diwali over 2-3 days...
You are right, the overall theme of Diwali is triumph over darkness/evil etc..
Like Rama returning to Ayodhya, or Krishna Ji's Govardan puja (think this is done the day after Diwali) etc..
Laksmi maa is also celebrated on this day, we perform laksmi puja as well...As to why I think it has to do with thankfulness for food, health wealth, happiness etc..
And praying to Lord Ram/Krishna ji, is for removing of evil/bad forces maybe? Also Ganesh must be worshipped as usual, so thats why Ganapati baba is there😳....
All in all, its a celebration not only of external lights, but the lights within ourselves...❤️
Hope I can help....

In our side we worship Goddess Kaali in Dipawali. That is the most unique feature of Hinduism that thought we have so many Gods n Goddess we believe in the oneness of Almighty. Do u know we Bengalis believe that Lord Ram started the traditon of worshpping Goddess Durga in September-October

i think diwali is introduced after ramji's avatar.i mean krishnaji.when he killsnarakasur,he will ask his last wish to krishnaji that during this period everyone should should celebrate a festival-diwali.
