I did not watch episode 53. But I know the summary of it from the recap shown in episode 54. I am writing the brief story from the recap. I am writing the detailed story by taking into consideration the recap shown in episode 54 and the story in Valmiki Ramayan. Therefore, the detailed story may not be exactly the same as shown in episode 53, but overall the story is more-or-less the same. Since the serial is showing story in very brief, it is possible that the story I am posting here is more detailed.

Brief Story
Hanuman bows to Ram and Laxman and takes them to Sugriv. Sugriv tells Ram about the enmity between Sugriv and his elder brother Vali. He tells how Vali wronged him and how he lives in fear because of Vali. He also said that he mistook Ram and Laxman as having been sent by Vali. Ram assures that he would kill Vali. On Ram's suggestion, Sugriv challenges Vali for a duel. Vali and Sugriv fight. Sugriv gets beaten up badly. He comes back and criticizes Ram as to why Ram did not keep his promise of killing Vali. Ram says that both brothers Sugriv and Vali look so similar that Ram could not figure out who was Vali and who was Sugriv. On Ram's suggestion, Laxman puts flower garland around Sugriv's neck. This was done so that Ram could identify Sugriv from the garland. Ram assures Sugriv that this time Vali would definitely be killed. Sugriv once again goes to challenge Vali.

Detailed Story
Hanuman comes down Rishyamukh mountain to check who the strangers are. He sees Ram and Laxman. He becomes thrilled on seeing Ram. He brings Ram to Sugriv and Laxman.
Sugriv greets Ram and Laxman.
Sugriv - Sri Ram, my elder brother Vali is my enemy. He wants to kill me. Out of fear of him, I am staying on this Rishyamukh mountain. He cannot enter this mountain because of a curse. He has sent his people to kill me many times. His people have been killed by me. When I came to know about you two, then I thought that you were also sent by Vali to kill me.

Ram asks Sugriv as to how the enmity between Sugriv and Vali started. Sugriv tells Ram the whole story. The following is the story told by Sugriv: -

Vali is a very mighty monkey. After the death of Vali and Sugriv's father, Vali became the king of monkeys. One day Vali was sleeping. A demon Mayavi came outside Vali's residence and started shouting. The demon challenged Vali for a fight. Vali got angry and came out. Sugriv also came out. When Mayavi saw the two mighty brothers together, then he got afraid and ran to save his life. Vali and Sugriv chased him. Mayavi went inside a cave. Vali asked Sugriv to wait at the entrance of the cave and went inside. Sugriv waited at the entrance of the cave for a very long time but Vali did not come out. Sugriv heard the screams of some demons but he did not hear Vali's voice. Then he saw lots of blood gushing out of the cave. Sugriv thought that his elder brother Vali was dead. He closed the entrance of the cave with a huge rock and came to Kiskindha, where Vali was ruling. When the ministers asked Sugriv what happened, then a tearful Sugriv told them the entire story. On the insistence of the ministers, Sugriv agreed to become the king of monkeys.

But Vali was not dead. Rather he killed Mayavi and his relatives inside the cave. Then he pushed the rock put by Sugriv and came out. When he reached Kiskindha, then he saw that Sugriv was ruling there. Vali thought that Sugriv had cheated him and he criticized Sugriv.

Sugriv, with folded hands, again and again told Vali as to what really happened, but Vali did not listen. Rather he banished Sugriv from Kiskindha and forcibly married Sugriv's wife.

Sugriv ran to Rishyamukh mountain with some of his trusted monkeys. Often Vali sent some monkeys to kill Sugriv but they themselves were killed by Sugriv.

On hearing the story, Ram assures Sugriv that he(Ram) would kill Vali. Ram and Sugriv take the oath of friendship. But Sugriv wants to know if Ram is really capable of killing Vali. He tells Ram many incidents, which show how mighty Vali is. He tells Ram about the fight between Vali and a demon Dundubhi (Mayavi's younger brother). The following is the story: -

There was a very powerful demon Dundubhi. He was proud of his strength. He challenged Vali for fight. Vali and Dundubhi fought in which Vali killed Dundubhi. Vali threw the huge body of Dundubhi to a great distance. The dead body of Dundubhi fell on Rishyamukh mountain. On the way, there was hermitage of sage Matang. The blood from the dead body fell in the hermitage. Sage Matang got enraged on seeing the blood. With his spiritual power, he could understand that it was Vali who threw the body. Sage Matang cursed that Vali would be dead if he ever entered that mountain.

Sugriv thus finished the story of the fight between Vali and Dundubhi.
Sugriv - Because of the curse of Sage Matang, Vali cannot enter this mountain. Therefore, I live here. See those bones. Those are the bones of Dundubhi. Vali threw Dundubhi's body to a great distance. Look at those seven Sal trees. Vali used to agitate one of these trees and make it leafless. If you can also throw these bones and pierce any one of these Sal trees with your arrow, then I will consider you capable of killing Vali.

Ram sportively hit the bones with his foot. The bones fell to a much larger distance than the distance to which Vali had thrown Dundubhi's body.
Sugriv - When Vali threw the body, it was full of flesh and blood. Now it is lighter because it is dry and without flesh. Therefore, it cannot be said who is mightier - you or Vali. If you can pierce any one of these Sal trees with an arrow, then I will consider you as mightier.

Ram shot an arrow. The arrow pierced not one but all the seven Sal trees. After that it pierced a mountain. After coming out of the mountain it pierced Earth to a great depth and then came back to Ram.
Sugriv was astonished. Now, he was convinced of Ram's strength.
Ram - Sugriv, go and challenge Vali. I will watch your fight hidden behind trees and I will kill Vali.

Sugriv went to Vali's residence and challenged him. Vali came out in anger. Vali and Sugriv fought. Sugriv was badly beaten up and he came running to Ram.
Sugriv - Sri Ram, I have been deceived by you. Trusting that you would kill Vali, I went and fought with him. But you did not keep your promise and I was beaten up. With much difficulty I saved my life and came here.

Ram - Sugriv, I would have killed Vali but both you and Vali look so similar that I could not distinguish between you two. I did not want that by mistake I kill you instead of Vali. Therefore, I did not shoot my arrow. Wear a garland so that I may recognize you. Once again, go and challenge Vali. I assure you that this time Vali will be killed.

Laxman puts a garland around Sugriv's neck. Sugriv goes and challenges Vali once again.

Episode ends.
