The name "Ravan" was given by Lord Siva because Ravan was once crying at a very high voice. The story follows:-
Ravan became very strong because of boon from Brahma. He defeated gods. He also took away Lanka from Kuber.
One day, Ravan went to Kailash mountain. Lord Siva was living on the top of the mountain. Ravan was so proud of his strength that he tried to uproot and move the mountain. Lord Siva got angry and pressed the mountain with a toe. Ravan's hands were now pinned under the mountain. Siva's people informed Ravan of who he had made angry. Ravan got afraid. He shouted for Siva's forgiveness. He composed and sang hymns praising Siva. Then Lord Siva released him from the bondage. Pleased with his devotion, Siva gave Ravan chandrahas(moon-shaped sword), a very powerful weapon.
When Ravan was pinned under Kailash, he was shouting so much that Siva named him Ravan. The word Ravan means "the one of terrifying roar."

However, according to Ramayan, Brahma was the one who gave Ravan the ten-head boon.
I did not see that episode of Ramanad Sagar's Ramayan. May be in that serial it was shown that Brahma gave ten heads to Ravan. But this is not what is written in the scripture Valmiki Ramayan.
It doesn't state that Ravan was B ORN WITH ten heads...because there would have to be a solid reason behind that......a person isn't just born with ten heads...
In the scriptures there is mention of demons having various strange bodies. There is even mention of a demon having his head in his stomach. So, why can't Ravan have been born with ten heads? Please note I am not saying that this story must be literally true. I am just talking about what the scriptures say. May be ten heads should not be taken literally. May be it has some other meaning. But scriptures do not say that Brahma gave him boon of ten heads. In scriptures, a large number of things are written, which are so strange that it is almost impossible to believe them.
According to Ramayan, Ravan offered his head to Brahma 10 times, and Brahma gave it back to him 10 times. Thus, Ravan's head gets regenerated 10 times. He got the name "Dasanan", because he had this regeneration power.
That might have been shown in TV serial Ramayan. But scriptures say that he cut off 9 heads (not 9 times) and offered to Brahma. When he was about to cut his 10th head, then Brahma intervened.
You mention that in the shiva puran, it states that he already had ten heads. They probably mean to say that he already had ten heads AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT....
Possible. But it is true that, according to scriptures, Brahma did not give him boon of ten heads.
I do not intend to sound argumentative.....I am sorry if I do.....I am just writing the thoughts that come up in my head when I read the post.
When I read scriptures, then lots of thoughts come to my mind and, frankly speaking, there are many things which I do not believe. But I am not talking about my beliefs. I am talking about what scriptures say.
because if he was born with ten heads, I guess that's a blooper in Ramayan....
Do you mean blooper in the book Valmiki Ramayan or blooper in Ramanand Sagar's TV serial Ramayan? Both are not exactly the same.
