Lost Without You
Chapter 22: Holding On Forever
"Zoya?" A worried voice rang through her ears faintly. She couldn't remember anything. A dull pounding in her head made her want to go back to sleep again. The last image that flashed through her mind was Gaffur grinning at her venomously.
"What happened?" Zoya mumbled and tried sitting up. Two sturdy hands held her and helped her up. She could see where she was now, and she had been here before. It was Asad's place. "Why am I at your place?"
"You passed out. Do you remember anything from yesterday?" Asad asked, rubbing the back of his neck.
Zoya rubbed her eyes and said, "I remember m-my father- um, Gaffur saying that...I was illegitimate. I can't remember anything after that."
"Okay."
"How long was I out?"
"All night."
"Oh."
There was a long, serious silence between them. Asad stared into the wall and Zoya rested her head against the bed. Only their breathing and the distant bustle of New York's traffic could be heard. Suddenly, Asad sighed and buried his face in his hands. Zoya was startled.
"Shit, I didn't want you to find out this way, Zoya." He grumbled.
"It's... honestly it's fine. It was bound to happen one way or another. But, you can still tell me whatever you know. I need to know, Asad." She pleaded. Asad looked at her with worry.
"Alright. If that's what you want. But have something to eat first, we'll talk over breakfast, okay?" Asad naturally stroked her cheek with his thumb. "See you outside in 10, alright?" Saying this, he left to the kitchen. Leaving a brazen Zoya on the bed. She gently touched the spot which had been under Asad's soft thumb. It was still tingling.
Asad was waiting by the microwave, which was heating up some pancakes Rashid had left for him. He smiled when he saw Zoya arrive in the kitchen, but frowned when he noticed the glare she was giving him. She stood by the entrance of the kitchen, comically holding her hands on her waist.
"What's wrong?" He asked, confused.
"This, isn't what I was wearing last night." She exclaimed, pulling at the edges of what she was wearing, which was a shirt of Asad's. It's not like she hated it, the scent which lingered in them was heavenly, but it was just too awkward to wear his shirt after their breakup. If you could even call it that. Asad chuckled softly. Tch, why is his laugh so precious.
"Oh, don't worry, I didn't do anything. I had my caretaker, Jessica, change it for you." He replied casually plating the pancakes.
Zoya pursed her mouth and sat opposite to Asad on the one of the barstools kept around the kitchen island. Asad passed one plate to her and opened a cabinet to look for some honey to go with the pancakes. "Wow, these are really good!"
Asad laughed silently, "Abbu made them." He said, leaning on the kitchen island with his elbows after pouring honey on both of their plates.
"You should really learn how to cook from him! Everything he makes turns out to be delicious, even the biryani he'd made that day!" Zoya smirked at him, he smirked back.
"What makes you think that I can't cook?" Asad said apprehensively, placing his hands on his waist.
Zoya rolled her eyes, "Oh, I don't know, maybe the fact that I've never seen you cook or that you treated all your girlfriends at places outside?"
"Alright, I'll cook you dinner today." Asad said, folding his arms across his chest. "Any requests?" He said coyly and leaned closer to Zoya, over the cold marble top. Their faces were inches apart. Zoya could feel his warm breath on the tip of her nose, she looked down and her attention went to his arms. They were placed on the marble top, keeping his weight up as he leaned over. He was wearing a fitted black tshirt so the muscles of his arms were visible. Her breath caught and she cleared her throat, breaking the tension between them.
"Wait a minute, dinner? I have to go home!" Zoya gasped.
"Oh, uh, about that. I don't think you should live in that apartment anymore." Asad said curtly.
"Excuse me, but who are you to decide where I live?!" Spluttered Zoya.
"It's not like that! It isn't safe, Gaffur is not a man to sit quietly and watch. He is going to try and find you. And since he knows where my father is, he will know that you live in the next building!" Asad explained frantically. "So, anyways dinner?"
"Yes." Zoya said and paused. "No, wait! Then where do I stay?!"
"You can stay here, with me."
"WHAT?!"
"What what? Do you own another flat somewhere?" Asad taunted.
"Well, no." Zoya muttered angrily.
"Then that's that. You're safe here, and that's what matters. So, for the hundredth time, dinner?"
Zoya groaned and glowered at him. "Umm, anything's fine with me. As long as it's edible and not black coal." She joked. Asad rolled his eyes put both their empty plates in the sink. "I'm just gonna... I'm gonna go take a shower." Asad nodded and smiled at her. His smile. The smiles he gave her these days were causing butterflies! What was happening?!
Zoya entered the bathroom and blushed profusely. This was where... She heard her phone vibrating from the room outside. Oh what now... She hung her towel on one of the hooks and sat on the bed, picking up her phone which was on the side table. It vibrated again and showed her the lockscreen. There was a message. No, two messages, from a person who made her skin crawl.
G: I'm sure you think you're safe, now that you're in Khan's care.
G: That won't be for long. Let's see how he throws you away once again after he's done using you. You're no different to him than all the other women he's dated, just another phase in his big life.
G:I'll make sure I'm the only person left for you to run to.
Zoya's hands were drenched in cold sweat and her phone slipped out of her hand. It fell with a loud 'clack'. Asad was already standing at the door of the room. "Zoya!" He yelled, seeing her paled face and shivering body. "Zoya, what happened?" Zoya curled up into a small ball and cried into her knees. Asad dashed to her side and pulled her into his arms. Zoya cried like a baby into his chest.
"Why? Why me?" She whimpered. "Why can't they just let me live?" Asad held her even tighter. He didn't notice the drops trailing down his own cheeks. His eyes grew red as he stared at the phone on the floor, which kept vibrating as it piled up with photos of him and Tanveer. Asad grit his teeth and snatched the phone from the floor, furiously scrolling through the messages Gaffur had sent. With each word he grew more livid.
"That b****rd." He growled. His attention quickly went to Zoya, what she must be thinking. "Zoya, don't pay attention to what he said. I'm not going to let anything happened to you, as long as I'm alive."
"Everyone says that! Everyone says they're never going to leave and then they leave!" Zoya cried. "Why am I the one who's always alone?"
"You're not alone. You have me." Asad mumbled in her soft hair and held one of her shivering hands to his warm face. You don't have to be the only one to suffer. He slowly caressed his cheek with her hand. Zoya could feel the ever so slight stubble graze her palm, and the tightening of his jaw. Her body shuddered slightly as goosebumps trailed up her arms. She found this feeling swelling inside her. The feeling that she could rely on someone completely. The feeling she could never have.
She shifted away from him. "No. No, he said even you'll throw me away. And what else? You've already done that once! It's not like you'll have a problem doing it again! You'll just leave the b****rd child for the nice rich girl like everyone else-"
"Zoya!" Asad exclaimed. "Calm down, I know what I did to you was...messed up. It was wrong. And I'm trying to live with that, by myself, but it's too f**king hard. I need to see you, to remind me every single day, just how much I screwed up. I'm not letting you go this time. And no one, not even Gaffur can do anything about it." He held Zoya tightly again, and both of them cried together. We can go through this together. The afternoon bustle of New York muffled their crying. For a while they only held each other, either of them comforting the other. Zoya placed her head on Asad's sturdy shoulder.
"Wait, if I'm an illegitimate child, what could he possibly want with me? And how?" Zoya asked between sniffles.
Asad breathed a shivering breath. "Your mother, Zeenat Farooqui, was the only daughter of Mohammad and Fatima Farooqui. As you know they were one of the richest and most powerful people in Bhopal. Mohammad and Fatima, were equals in every way, making both of them incredible business people. Their property was like the roots of a tree, spread everywhere. Zeenat was the light of their life. They loved her a lot." Asad paused when he saw tears in Zoya's eyes.
"Ammi used to talk about them so much. Go on." She smiled weakly at Asad. He kissed her forehead softly.
"So when she fell in love with Gaffur, they wanted nothing but her happiness so they allowed the alliance, not aware of Gaffur's true colours. One night, they were returning from a meeting and-"
"Yes they...they died in a car crash!" Zoya concluded. Staring into the bed.
"Zoya. It wasn't just any car crash. Gaffur had planned the whole thing." Asad winced and revealed.
"What?"
"I looked into your family history as soon as he gave me the orders to...to bring you to him. Then I found out about the accident, I thought something was fishy, as the day the car accident happened, was the day Gaffur proposed to Zeenat, but later they never even got married. Gaffur moved himself in to the Farooqui mansion and slowly revealed everything to Zeenat whilst keeping her tied down. I got some people to find the driver and interrogate him, turns out that your grandparents had found out about Razia, who was actually married to Gaffur when he got Zeenat pregnant, with you. So he killed them that night. And as he wanted, the property had passed on to Zeenat. And she declared that the property would pass on to you next, the moment she had the papers in her hand. Then..."
"That's why..." Zoya trembled again and broke into tears. Asad looked at her in puzzlement and worry. "He hit her, abused her! He brought Razia into the house to torment her! And then when I left for college he..." Zoya cried into her hands. "He killed them. Everyone else believed the lies he told them but I knew. I knew what he had done. So I ran away. I came here. But he followed me here too." She tested her head on Asad's shoulder. There was a sad, peaceful silence again. "I'm so sorry." Zoya mumbled.
"For what?", Asad asked, confused.
"That you got roped into this. Why you, you've...already lost so much." She stroked his cheek, and realised she liked the feeling. His warm cheek fit perfectly in her soft hand.
"Zoya, I might have quite a few regrets around this, but meeting you was definitely not one of them. Don't ever say sorry for something like that again. If anyone, I should be sorry, for putting you through this. But I'm not going to let you suffer again Zoya, because I cannot see you in pain anymore." Asad gently wiped the tears in her eyes and knew his mistake when he looked into them. They did their thing, reeled him in like a helpless creature. Shit we're supposed to keep this platonic. Two days into the contract and we're already doing this?! Her eyes completely hypnotized him. What are you doing to me, Zoya? His head slowly drooped, both of their lips had parted and were inches away from meeting.
Clack!
Zoya's phone fell on the floor and both of them sprang apart from each other.
"You...I... I'll start on the lunch. You can take a shower if you like." Asad spluttered and hurried off to the kitchen. Huffing, he sorted out the ingredients of some spaghetti. F**k she drives me crazy.
---
Zoya was wiping her body down after a relaxing warm shower when she realised something. I don't have any clothes! Shit I'm gonna have to ask for one of his shirts! She paced around the bathroom trying collect her thoughts. Because ever since he went back to the kitchen, she'd wanted him. It was intense, fiery even. Ugh, why did I have to insist on the contract?! It was supposed to be platonic! It had barely even been a week and she had realised that she really did like him, a lot. Zoya bit on her lip. "Um, A-Asad?" She yelled.
"Yes?" She heard him answer. Cue the butterflies!
"C-Could you c'mere real quick?" Zoya suppressed a giggle when she heard a loud clatter and the hurried 'tip-tap' of his feet. "I just realised that my clothes um...are aren't here so, could you give me another shirt of yours? Preferably a long one?" Zoya said to him through the closed door.
"Are you sure you want a long one? The short ones are more comfortable you know." Asad snickered back. Zoya rolled her eyes.
"Just gimme a shirt you jerk!" She yelled, Asad chuckled, and in half a minute, Asad's hand was sticking out from behind the door holding a white shirt.
"Here. It's fresh from the dryer so it's nice and warm."
"Thanks." Zoya replied. Man he can be really cute sometimes!
---
A few days had passed. Zoya was really frustrated. In these few days Asad and Zoya had had moments where they were closer to each other than needed. He had given her her won space, gotten her clothes delivered, arranged a car for her to go to work, although she didn't like that idea.
The contract was really getting in the way. Zoya had several moments where she just wanted to jump him! It was dangerous. She knew she had to keep it under control, but the spark was just too bright. They had become closer to each other since that day. They were helping each other with their problems. Almost like a couple.
Almost.
It was midnight on a Saturday, and Zoya was sitting on her bed, which was the in the guest room, sketching something fun on her iPad. She couldn't sleep. Because if she slept, she would dream, and lately what she dreamt was wild. Her throat became dry as she thought over it. I want wanter. She made her way to the kitchen through the full darkness of the house.
"No. No!"
Hmm? The empty glass clinked against the top as she placed it. "Mr... Khan?"
"Ammi, not you. Please..." She heard him mumble from his room again. Worried, she decided to see what was wrong.
"Asad?" She called out when she entered his room. She almost cried out loud.
Asad was curled up into a fetus position and trembling under his duvet. "Ammi!" He breathed in his sleep. Zoya could hear his laboured breaths till the door. She instantly dashed to his side and tried waking him up. "Abbu! Ammi, she's... she's...hang..."
Zoya gasped and without giving it a second thought, hustled onto the bed, placing Asad's head on her lap. His soft hair tickled her thigh since she was in shorts. "Asad! It's just a nightmare, wake up!" Zoya wept, shaking his shoulders.
"D-Don't go Ammi. Why did you leave us?" Asad whimpered, Zoya stifled a sniff and tried soothing him by gently running her hands through his hair. "Ammi..." He croaked, holding Zoya close. Closer than ever. Sure, they had hooked up once, but this had just became way more intimate.
"Shh, I'm here. I'm not going anywhere. I'll be here, always." She whispered and touched her forehead to his, closing her eyes. She stroked his cheek gently and held him for a while.
Asad steadily calmed down, soon enough he snuggled into her lap and fell into peaceful sleep.
Zoya smiled at his sleeping form. She'd always liked how he looked when he slept. There were no creases on his forehead, no facade of the 'villainous rich playboy'. Zoya slowly bent down, and brushed her lips against his forehead. She almost giggled when she saw him smile slightly and sigh in contentment.
Now that he was asleep, she could go back to her room. Asad's head was heavily resting on her thigh. Bighead. It wouldn't budge! Neither would his arms which were holding her there. "Don't go."
Zoya jumped in her skin when she heard him whisper. "You- I thought you were asleep!" She hissed back.
"Don't go, please." He breathed again. Zoya clicked her tongue shifted uncomfortably so that she was lying down next to him. His arm was draped around her waist and her head rested on his chest. So much for platonic. Zoya thought and closed her eyes, slipping into the world she wished she could've been in.

Lost Without You
Chapter 21: A Piece of Peace
DUUUN DUUUUUN DUN DUN DUN DUUUUUN DUUUN DUN DUN DUN DUUUUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUUUNN!!!
Asad woke up startled and confused by the loud and rather grand fanfare of the Star Wars theme blasting from nowhere. "What the..."
"Sorry," came a small, groggy voice from beside him, "that's my alarm." Zoya smiled at him sheepishly as she sat up beside him, her hair falling over her droopy eyes. Asad was taken over by her adorable demeanor in the morning. Meanwhile Zoya started patting the duvet around, her eyes still half closed, looking for her phone which had slipped out of her pocket whilst sleeping. "I had a marathon with Mitch recently so I changed it to that." She said, finally finding her phone and dismissing the alarm.
Asad snickered at her. "Geez, you're such a geek." He teased.
"Wow, thanks." Zoya glowered. "Anyways, are you okay?"
"Me? What do you think is wrong with me, I'm perfectly fine." Asad pointed at himself and answered.
Zoya shook her head. "I mean, last night. You were talking in your sleep. I only came to get some water then I heard you so I tried to calm you down a bit. What was wrong?"
"No, it was just...it's kind of a recurring nightmare." Asad suddenly remembered the dream he had last night, since it wasn't really a dream, but a horrible memory. He dragged his rough hands down his face and groaned. Zoya thought she saw tears well up in his eyes.
Zoya nodded. She could very well understand how it felt to have the same kind of nightmare over and over again. After all, she had her share of horrible memories too. "Well, do you want to talk about it? I used to have the same problem you know. Until..." She paused. Realising something she had failed to see earlier. Zoya snapped out of her daze when she heard a light sniffle from Asad's side.
When she looked up to meet his eyes, she saw tears in them. She was right, he was crying. He was looking like a man who had just lost everything, everyone. "Asad..." Zoya jumped towards Asad and wrapped her arms around him. She stood on her knees as Asad sat cross legged and hugged her back. Zoya placed her chin on the top of his head and started whispering sweet nothings into his hair.
Asad breathed in her warm scent. He couldn't understand how this woman could do what his own father and brother had failed to do all these years. They had tried, they had. But they hadn't managed to make so much of a difference. He tightened his arms around her, burying his tear stained face into her soft abdomen. Crying like a child in her arms. Everything he had managed to trap behind his wall of alcohol and sex was tumbling out. Ayaan's words which had been thrown at him in anger were ringing in his mind. I just want to let you know, Bhai, that if you lose that someone you want in your life, forever, regret will follow you till your grave. Asad knew at this moment, that if he lost this woman, he would crumble. That he would go mad if he couldn't be with her.
Everything was echoing around Zoya, every sound felt blunt as she came upon realisation. Her nightmares, they hadn't happened after she met Asad. Her thoughts had been so plagued by him, his face, his smile, his laugh, hell even his annoying side, that the thoughts of her haunting past had almost been cast away. It was next to miraculous. Zoya ran her hands through the hair at the back of his head closed her eyes, letting a couple of tears slip out.
---
It was now late into the morning. The penthouse apartment was quite silent apart from the faint clunking of utensils. Zoya was toasting some bread to be eaten with honey. Asad was still down after breaking out like that. He was silently watching whatever was on on the TV, which was a typical romantic drama he had once spotted Rashid watching when he though no one was around.
"Here. Have something to eat, you'll feel better." Asad heard Zoya's melodious voice out of nowhere and saw honey on toast hovering under his nose. He smiled and took the plate from her. "I know it's not much, it's just what I could manage- I...never really learnt how to cook, not that I can't cook you know, I can make basic stuff like scrambled eggs, toast and instant ramen- I mean- I can cook enough for myself so I-" Zoya stopped rambling when she noticed Asad smiling at her with a bored expression on his face. "What're you looking at me like that for?" She snapped.
"Nothing. Just that you're really cute when you're rambling for no reason." Asad said coolly.
Zoya blushed. She swiftly turned her back to him and walked towards the kitchen. "I-I'm gonna... gonna make myself some Eggos..." She spluttered and flitted into the kitchen. Geez this man really...
She was just about to put the Eggos into the toaster when she heard her phone ring. Oh shit! I had work today, must be Karen. She grabbed her phone and sighed in relief when she read the caller name. It was Mitch. "Hey!"
"Hey? HEY?! Don't you 'hey' me! Where the heck are you? Karen's been breathing down my neck ever since I arrived and she keeps asking me about you!" Yelled Mitch from the other side. Zoya flinched and leant against the kitchen top, placing her phone between her ear and a hunched shoulder.
"Uh, yeah about that. I don't think I can make it to work today." Sighed Zoya, stuffing the toaster with Eggos.
"But why? Did Asad do something? I can-"
"Tell Karen I'll make up for today by working overtime tomorrow, okay? Alright, gotta go!" Zoya sang into the mouthpiece and got back to her Eggos, forgetting that her shoulder was still hunched and had the phone on it.
Suddenly, she felt something warm graze the side of her waist and jumped in fear, causing the phone to slip and tumble into the toaster!
"What the -" She saw Asad staring at the toaster with wide eyes. He was just placing his plate in the sink beside Zoya when his arm accidentally grazed Zoya's waist. "Oh SHIT! SHIT SHIT SHIT!" Zoya swore and tugged at the electric cord, pulling the plug out of the outlet. There was smoke swirling out the toaster and a crackling sound was heard. Zoya stared at it in gall before turning towards Asad and glaring at him ruthlessly.
"What?" Asad shrugged and tried to escape the matter.
"'What?' You're asking me, 'what'?" Zoya stalked towards him dangerously. "My phone just got friggin' fried in the toaster because of you!" She yelled.
"You mean...toasted?" Asad joked.
"Ugh!" Zoya threw the box of Eggos at him.
"Ow woman!"
She rolled her eyes. "You couldn't tell me that you were keeping your plate in the sink?!"
"Oh so now it's MY fault?" Sneered Asad playfully. "You'd clearly forgotten that the phone was on your shoulder, I was just keeping my plate."
"So it didn't cross your mind to remind me?" Zoya said incredulously. "You could've just told me to move aside!" She held her head in her hands in panic. "Ugh, what am I gonna tell Karen if she calls? Hell what will Mitch do if she asks?!"
"Well he-"
"You know that she likes you, right? That means if she finds out I've been living with you, I could lose my job!"
"Don't say tha-"
"If I lose my job I won't be able to pay rent! And if I... can't...what...are...you doing?" Zoya said under her breath. Asad had suddenly moved close to her, caging her against the kitchen top. Zoya's cheeks warmed up, and her pulse heightened. She could see the muscles of his arms flexing through the corner of her eyes.
Asad's gaze was on her lips, which she was biting slightly. She had no idea how pretty she looked. There was nothing he wanted to do more than kiss her in this moment. His heart was going haywire and his breath was uneven. But, controlling his desires, he stepped away from her, earning a look of confusion from her.
"Um, what was that?" Zoya awkwardly tucked a loose lock of hair behind her ear.
"That was to shut you up." Asad sighed coolly. He heard Zoya click her tongue and he smirked.
She was annoyed at this man's guts. How could he just step away after that?! "You couldn't think of anything else?"
"Well, there are other ways to shut you up." Asad folded his arms confidently and towered over Zoya, who raised a coy brow.
"Yeah? Like what?" She loudly challenged, and before she knew it, Asad had swooped down and stolen her lips. She gasped and clutched his tshirt. "Asad-" She managed to breathe out as he tilted his head to a better angle. Zoya moaned into his lips and locked her arms around his neck, effectively pulling him closer and giving into him.
Asad groaned in response and gently lifted her up to place her on the cold marble countertop. His teeth softly bit her lower lip and he pulled at it gently, relishing the feeling of Zoya's sigh blow over his lips.
Wait.
Both broke the kiss abruptly. "I, I shouldn't have done that, I'm sorry. I completely forgot about the contract." Asad apologised quickly, not wanting to grow distant from her again. "Please don't..."
"F**k the contract." Zoya said under her breath and gazed boldly into Asad's eyes. He looked at her in gall.
"I'm sorry? Did you...say something?" Asad asked in bewilderment. Did she want this? Was she...she finally accepting him again? His mind went crazy with questions.
"I said, f**k the contract." Zoya said fiercely to Asad and pulled him back to her by his collar, crashing her lips into his again. Asad groaned and wound his arms around her, standing between her legs.
Asad was ecstatic, he had terribly missed her warmth, her taste and the scent of her hair. Asad kissed her softly, unlike how he would usually ravish her mouth. He held her to himself like she could disappear at any moment. A soft sob escaped his lips as he drew a breath. His dark eyes met Zoya's for a moment, and he could see that even she had felt something.
He didn't know what their relationship was at the moment. But he could tell it was not going to end anywhere near soon.
Alright I know I said I'll update like a week ago I'm so sorry! Also this one's a bit shorter than I'd like, originally I was aiming for like 10,500-10,800 words but that was taking a lot a of to time and I didn't want to keep you guys waiting. Love ya!❤️✨
PS: I will now be tagging instead of PMing to give updates, I find it more convenient. So if you want updates (which won't be often since I'm a lazy writer xp), pls buddy!
PPS: This has now been proofread 😌
Hi there!
So sorry I couldn't unreserve my previous post cuz I had been busy with work this whole week. Just casually ended up opening the forums today and you got a new update! Yay!
Both these chapters have been written soo beautifully. They are such a dreamy mess! ( heart eyes with tears if that was an emoji! ) I loved the progression in their relation and the naturally strengthening bond! I loved how well you wrote Zoya's vulnerability in the last part and how Asad became her rock in that tough moment. And Zoya returned the favour in the end and in this part when he was dealing with the horrid memories of his past.
It was good that the sexual tension, which is almost always floating everytime they aren't close to each other, decided to make itself very evident to the both of them this time making them frustrated out of their minds ! Haha Zoya's plight was kinda funny and Asad had to ofcourse to play with her when her self control was way too out of her pocket!
You really had to end on that note? Whyy :( Albeit small, loved the part! I'm guessing the confession is coming up sooon! Well I hope so! An emotional conversation about just the two of them would be a such a treat to read!
Loved this so far! It's a request to keep updating as soon as you can, we'd probably do with smaller updates as long as they are more frequent!
Brilliant writing as always!
