SWORD & CROSS.
The words, elegantly carved in the huge iron gates, seemed to bekon her as Zoya continued to gaze at its beautiful curves. There was something hypnotic about those artistic curves, something welcoming yet eluminating an aura of deep warning, as if expressing the nature of the world which waited for her inside it. Zoya shook her head to shoo away those bizzare thoughts as she inched towards the gates of Sword & Cross College, her world for the next one year. She had nothing but those inumberable para-normal novels to blame which she read religiously, for these strage thoughts which plagued her mind. She thanked the guard who opened those gigantic gates for her and took her luggage to keep at her room-door.
Stepping inside she paused to take a look at her surroundings and what she saw creeped her out a little. Not a single soul could be seen anywhere in her line of sight. The place felt as still as stone and as silent as death, along with illuminating some strange, unexplainable aura. Well she couldn't blame as she was the one who had come when the student-body was busy in classes. To her right was the dorms and on her left was the commons. Behind the dorms, proudly stood the over 200 years old building where the classes were taken, a very fine spesimen of gorgeous Georgian architecture.
Zoya jumped at a sudden noise which immediately attracted her attention to the greenary that surrounded the whole campus on three sides. To her astonishment, she found just an old owl hooting from a tree branch.
" Get a grip you idiot." She muttered under her breath, clutching a hand on her frantically beating heart. Her hazel eyes were locked with the thick walls of lush, dark green forest the surrounded the whole area. The countless live oak trees and thousands pine trees which bordered the campus, seemed to gently sway in welcome, tempting to quest, to unearth the secrets it beheld.
Zoya's trance was broken when she felt something wet on her cheeks and looked up to the sky. It was a matter of seconds for her to realise that it was actually raining, courtesy to the dense, gray clouds that blanketed the sky and the defening roars of thunder. She looked at the dorms at her right and hurried towards it. But as if like some magic, the sky seemed to open all its flood-gates and in moments, a heavy downpour started. Inspite of her quickened tempo, the shelter felt like miles away to her. The neumerous water-droplets were continuously crashing to her body, breaking into a thousand crystal-like pieces. The drops of water were nesting on her long, thick eyelashes, making it difficult to see ahead.
As if to prove this point only, her flat pumps-clad feet slipped on the muddy ground, effectively disorienting her balance. She let out out a yelp and her eyes shut close fearing the fall which never came. Instead, came a pair of strong arms which encircled her waist, saving her, balancing her. Her breath hitched as the warmth from those palms spread through her entire body, warming wet, water-soaked skin through her top which was now plastered to her body and something inside her fluttered wildly, like recognising the touch. The blow of this sudden thought was enough to pry her eyes open and no sooner she had done that, her gaze slammed with the most breath-takingly gorgeous pair of black orbs, with hints of dark blue peeking from them, almost blending with the black.
She was rudely awoken from her trance with a rough shove. It took her few moments to understand that the owner of those arms and eyes had steadied her and that too not so gently. She shivered at the loss of warmth and felt silly for wanting to stay in that embrace, forever. Zoya's gaze finally landed on the man himself. Though it was still raining vigorously, strangely she could make out the details of his face just fine and what she saw definately left her awe-struck. Before her stood the most handsome guy she had ever seen, with short black hair, high cheek-bones, full-lips and a sun-kissed complexion. The black jeans and t-shirt and the black leather jacket couldn't prevent the impression that an well-built body was behind it. But it wasn't those features but his eyes which kept her speechless. He was also drenched from head to toe, water was dripping from his hair, the tip of his nose, glistening on his long, black eyelashes. He was scowling and, Zoya realised with a start, he was scowling at her.
" I... umm..ac.." She started to stutter an apology.
" Next time try to use your eyes while walking." He almost barked out the words bitterly in a posture that screamed distaste, baffling Zoya. The scowl on his face was deepening and then without giving her any chance to response, he stormed away from there. Without giving her another glance he slowly disappeared behind the haze of that continuous water-fall. Zoya stood there motionless, looking at the path he had taken in an unbelieveable astonishment at his sudden rage, while the rain continued to drench her.
