Veteran Actress Sandhya Shantaram Passes Away
What a joke this is!
'I don't want to wake up regretting the chances we didn't take Zoya' 'I am not willing to take this chance, if I have to live in regret because of this then so be it' Haider let out an exasperated breath 'Well I guess if you are not strong enough to take on a challenge, then you will never be strong enough to change' 'why do you want to change me?' 'I don't, I want you to wake up and realise that you can't step forward in life, you can't open up a new chapter if you keep closing the book at the last one' 'Haider, please' ok fine...I have tried and tried Zoya but I guess you have made up your mind...and nothing I say or do will make you change that' Zoya shook her head 'I am sorry' 'no you are not...if you are sorry then you can't be doing the right thing, and if you are doing the right thing then you have nothing to be sorry for' Zoya held out her hand 'goodbye Haider' 'for you maybe...for me it will always be see you again, one day'.
Haider walked off leaving Zoya extremely heavy hearted, she appreciated everything her best friend had tried to do for her but there were certain things in life that one didn't have control over.
Zoya and Haider had been friend for the best part of three years, they met just after they graduated and joined the world of media as new recruits working for The Youth of Today. A magazine that specialised in reporting and following the youth of India, it covered everything from what the latest fashion trends were to the rise of teenage pregnancies, a magazine by the youth for the youth.
Zoya was one of the best fashion journalists, she spent months creating a feature on the world of fashion and eating disorders, in recent months there had been a few untimely deaths of fashion models who went great extremes to lose weight, so extreme that they tragically lost their lives, and died of multiple organ failures. One such case Zoya followed was of Riya Saxena, a top model and the daughter of one of the biggest industrialist in all of Mumbai. Zoya's feature highlighted a few home truths after which Mr Saxena openly promised to ruin Zoya's career. Not being able to withstand the pressures Zoya decided to leave, not only her job but the country.
Haider and all of her friends tried everything to get Zoya to stay but she refused point blank. One thing Zoya was known for was her stubbornness, once she had decided something nothing could change her mind, in this case not even her best friend.
As hurt as he was Haider refrained from saying anything to her, he dropped her to the airport and left having uttered those last words, Zoya wanted to hug him but he kept a distance that clearly indicated his upset and disappointment. Zoya was moving to London to be with her older sister Mariam and brother in law Sahib, even though Mariam did not agree wither sisters decision she was still happy to have her back home with her. Having lost their parents a few years ago Mariam and Zoya only had one another.
Once settled back in London Zoya joined enrolled at the London College of Fashion, she continued what she had left behind as it was all she knew how to do. In the weeks that past Mariam and Sahib's constant lectures died down as she refused to change her decision 'Baji, I am of...I will be back late as I am covering a photo shoot' 'Zoya, you do know there is an underground strike starting this evening, how will you get back, the busses and roads will be packed' 'I will manage Baji, even if I walk it will only take me an hour or so' 'ok, please keep me informed you know what Sahib gets like' 'I will...Allah Hafiz'.
As well as being the person behind the ink that wrote so flawlessly Zoya had picked up an added talent and that was photography. She had been asked by one of her editors if she would carry out the photo shoot, which she happily agreed to do. London College of Fashion was one of the best platforms given to any budding artist, from fashion designing, photography to becoming a makeup artist, it trained the best of the best in any field.
Capturing the most stunning pictures of some great master pieces Zoya sat down to take a break 'where has the day gone, I can't believe it's half four already' she said looking down at her watch 'Zoya, do you want to head off now?' Sonya asked I thought we still had a few to take outside?' 'We do...but you live the furthest away...so thought you might want to get a head start' Zoya smiled at her friends kind gesture 'I will be fine...come on, gives me and excuse to get some fresh air'.
The team made their way Hyde Park, where they set up near the lake 'ok girls and boys let's get these pictures snapped whilst we still have the weather on our side'. The one thing Zoya could never get used to was the unpredictable British weather, even in summer the sun hardly made an appearance.
After a long two and a half hours Zoya and her team finally made a wrap. As they walked towards Oxford Street they saw how congested it had become 'how you getting home?' Sonya asked 'I think I am going to walk back, it will be faster than waiting for a bus or getting a cab' 'you sure you don't want to stay round' 'yes, I have so much to do for the next feature, I will see you in the morning'.
Zoya picked up her bag, she stuck in her headphones and started walking through the park along with so many others who were also walking to get back home.
Walking at a leisurely pace she flicked through her playlist trying to find a song that fitted her mood, lost in her phone Zoya didn't see the group of cyclists that were passing in front of her. As she stepped onto the cycling path she felt a hand grab her from behind and pull her with such force that she went tumbling back.
With her heart racing at a hundred miles per hour and she looked up in shock to see a man lying on top of her 'are you blind, you could have gotten yourself killed' all she could see was this man with narrowed eyes shouting something at her, with the music that was still blaring in her ears she wasn't able to hear anything. The man stood up and held his hand out to her, Zoya who was still trying to breath took him by the hand and stood up, she pulled out her headphones and saw the cycles pass by, it was then she realised what had happened. 'Are you ok?' he asked still looking anoyyed 'I...I think so...' seeing her face fall he felt bad at his outburst 'I am sorry, I didn't mean to scare you...but you should seriously watch where you are going' 'I'm sorry...and thank you' 'you're welcome'.
The man picked up his rucksack and started walking away leaving Zoya to recover from her shocked state of mind.
Putting her phone away she continued walking not really paying attention to where she was going 'crap, I am on the wrong side' she moaned as she realised that in her disorientated and extremely embarrassed stated earlier she had just started walking in any direction 'tupid train strike and stupid me' she said as she made her way back again.
Further ahead she saw the very same man leaning down to tie up his shoe laces, she slowly walked up to him 'excuse me' the man looked up at her 'you...are you ok?' he asked genuinely concerned 'yes...I am...I managed to walk in the total opposite direction' the man started smiling 'so you are not following me?' Zoya's eyes widened 'follow...no...not at all...I just saw you and...' the man let out a laugh 'relax, I was only teasing...hi, I'm Asad' he said holding his hand out 'Hi, I am Zoya' 'so Zoya, which direction you headed in?' 'Kensington' 'same here...would you like to walk together' 'sure, if you don't mind?' 'Not at all'.
'You work or study?'
'A little bit of both, I work as a fashion journalist with the London School of Fashion and being here has opened me up to a lot of other fields so am kind of studying to'
'Sounds interesting...you are not from here are you?'
'What makes you say that?'
Asad smiled, 'you accent, it's a little different'
'Yes, I am originally from India, my sister and brother in law live here so I came to join them'
'Nice'
'So what do you do Asad?'
'My work isn't as interesting as yours, mine includes a lot of boring statistics and spreadsheets'
'Business Analyst'
'That obvious hunh?'
Zoya started laughing
'You have a beautiful smile Zoya' Asad said honestly
Zoya's cheeks started to burn as her smile started to shake with a little nervousness
'Thank you'
As they were walking a strange silence took place, and that point Asad stopped
Zoya turned around realising he wasn't next to her 'what happened?' she asked
Asad took a step closer to her 'without you freaking out on me or thinking that I am weird...can I invite you to have a coffee with me in there?' Zoya looked towards the Starbucks he was pointing to across the street, in all there walking she hadn't realised they had come to the end of it. 'Now why would I think you are weird...or even freak out?' 'Because I met you a little over twenty minutes ago' 'hmm...true...but you haven't given me any reason to think you are weird...I think it would be safe to go in there with you'.
Asad and Zoya sat comfortably and talked about various things, she told him a little about her life in India and he told her about how left home at a young ager to become independent 'don't you miss being around your family?' 'Of course I do...I still see them...I mean during the holidays. I am planning to go at the end of September' 'wow, I would love to visit Canada, just to see the Niagara Falls would be amazing' 'it is, you should definitely go' 'one day'.
Finishing the last of her coffee Zoya picked up her bag 'thank you so much, for helping, walking and talking' Asad gave her a heart-warming smile 'my pleasure, do you live far from here?' 'No, just a few roads down' 'come let me at least walk you out'. Standing outside the shop Zoya turned towards him and held her hand out 'it was lovely meeting you Asad' 'you too Zoya...just make sure you pay a little more attention to where you are going next time' Zoya smiled looking a little embarrassed 'I will...well I guess until another time' definitely another time'.
Walking off in different direction they both wore a smile that radiated, Zoya couldn't stop giggling, she felt like a sixteen year old going ga ga over her first crush and Asad, well he was just smitten by her sheer beauty.
'Baji, please give me a lift...' Zoya begged her sister 'I am not getting stuck in traffic, and your place is in the total opposite direction...walking is good for you...or take the bus' 'ugh...you are so mean...and I hate this place stupid transport system' 'it will be up and running by this evening, so you can get home on time' Zoya pocked her tongue out at her sister as she walked out in a huff.
Zoya couldn't help the smile that adorned her face as she walked past the Starbucks, since her arrival she hadn't made any friends outside her working environment, and Asad was the first person she had actually met no matter how odd the circumstances were. As she approached the park she caught her eyes wandering from one side to the other 'I can't believe you are looking for him, seriously Zoya, like you will ever see him again' 'See who again' Zoya jumped at hearing his voice behind her, she grabbed on to her racing heart 'Ya Allah...you scared me...oh my gosh...it's you?' she said looking overly happy 'yes, it definitely is me...good morning?' 'Good morning...' She managed to say shaking her head at her own silliness 'so is it you that is following me now?' Asad leaned in closer to her 'did I forget to mention I was the psycho stalker business analyst' Zoya started laughing 'I guess you did miss out that part...shall we?' she said holding her hand out in front of them 'you want me to hold your hand?' Zoya quickly withdrew her hand 'no...I meant shall we start walking' Asad laughed out loud 'I know, I was teasing...bad habit' 'I'm sure I will get used to it'.
The walk back towards the city was pleasant, they engrossed in light hearted conversations along the way 'where is your office?' 'At the back of Bond Street' 'oh...so you not far from me...I mean the college' 'I guess not...you have a busy day ahead of you?' 'No busier than any other day...how about you?' 'same...one meeting after the other until its home time' 'well atleast the trains will running by then' 'true'. As they approached Bond Street Zoya stopped 'this is you' it most certainly is...it was lovely to meet you again' 'you too Asad, I enjoyed our talks...well I guess until next time' she said holding her hand out 'you mean until they strike again' Zoya let out a little laugh as she shook his hand.
Zoya was about to turn around when he called out after her 'Zoya...would you like to meet up for lunch...I mean if you are not too busy or...' Zoya inwardly smiled at his sweet gesture and the hesitation she saw on his face 'I would love to...I break at around one, is that ok?' 'Perfect...can I give you my number...just in case anything comes up...so you can tell me' 'sure' Asad pulled out his phone, he tapped in Zoya's number as she read it out to him and then gave her a missed call 'got it' she said as she saved it 'I will see you soon' 'In'Sha'Allah'
Both Asad and Zoya worked through the morning with happy faces, their eyes travelling to the clock every few moments as they counted down to one, the time they would meet one another again'
'And what are you so happy about?' Sonya said slumping her tired self next to her. Zoya sat up and turned towards her 'can I ask you a really silly question?' 'Go for it, I am full of silliness today, am sure I will have an answer' 'Sonya' 'ok...what?' 'Do you believe in love at first sight?' Sonya pulled an odd face 'isn't that a little clichd?' 'That's what I thought' 'why...have you fallen in love with someone?' she asked jokingly. When Sonya saw Zoya's face drop a little she quickly placed her hand over her arm 'no way...don't tell me...Zoya Farooqui, in love with a stranger' 'no...not a stranger...as such...' Zoya went on to tell Sonya about Asad and how she was meeting him for lunch 'Oh my gosh, I can't believe it...Zoya, the fact that he asked you to lunch...he must like you...man this is so exciting' 'you think...why am I so nervous for then' 'because you are physically attracted to him...I don't know how you wok things in India...but here...you go out, you get to know one another and then...who knows it really may be love' Zoya raised an eyebrow 'and what do you think girls in India do, get married have an army of children and then wake up one morning next to a man and then realise that she is in love' Sonya started laughing 'no...sorry...I didn't mean it like that...but you know what I mean...look if you like him then just go with that...he asked you on a lunch date...ask him to the movies on the weekend...and take it from there' 'you sure?' 'one hundred percent, you are a girl of the modern world...now go...you only got ten more minutes' giving her a quick hug Zoya looked herself over in the mirror one last time before she went to meet him.
Asad was already waiting for her downstairs 'Hi' she called out a little surprised to see him, something he didn't fail to notice 'why do you look so surprised for?' Zoya shook her head 'orry...I thought I was meeting you outside your place...I didn't expect to see you here that's all' 'seeing it was my invitation I should be the one picking you up...right?' 'Such a gentleman...so where are we going?' 'There is a Turkish place around the corner' 'Turkish sounds good'.
As they got comfortable and talking Asad asked her why she left her job in India when she was so happy with it. Having told him what had happened Asad couldn't help looking a little disappointed 'I would have to agree with Haider and your sister Zoya, you are a strong, young independent woman, why did you let him drive you out, especially when you did nothing but expose the truth about a very real issue' 'I know, it wasn't just that...ok, maybe it was...Mr Saxena forced my editor to throw me out, with the power and influence he had he wasn't going to let me get another job anywhere...and I missed Baji too...after my parents she is all I have...I thought it would be a good idea to make a clean start' 'do you regret your decision?' 'Not at all...I am happy here, I love the college, the friends that I have made...I mean I do miss Haider a lot...' Asad looked up at her 'is he your boyfriend?' Zoya nearly choked on the air she just inhaled 'Ya Allah...no...not at all, he is a very good friend, my best friend, Haider already has that spot filled, he is getting married next year' 'Oh...so you don't have a boyfriend?' 'No, I don't...how about you?' 'I would if I was gay...but nope no boyfriend either' Zoya just realised what she had said and started laughing out loud. Asad who was laughing with her stopped to see her, she looked mesmerising, her care free laugh, the way her eyes sparkled took his breath away 'you are so silly...you know what I meant Asad' she said holding on to her stomach 'I know...no, no girlfriend either' Zoya stopped as her eyes locked with his 'a young talented guy as yourself and no girl?' 'No time...or maybe not found the right one just yet' 'So Mr Analyst what are you looking for?' Asad leaned back in his chair and looked at her 'I am not entirely sure...someone who is full of life and colour, someone who is easy to get on with, enjoys living in the moment, who isn't afraid to take risks, who is loving and caring' 'that narrows it down' she said making him smile 'what kind of risks?
'hmm...the kind that would involve her going out for coffee and a lunch date with a guy she met less that twenty four hours ago' Zoya's eyes widened a little, this time he didn't break out into a laugh or even a smile so she knew that this time he was not just teasing her.
Trying to keep the chaos being created within her she looked at him determined to match his confidence 'that narrows it down to at least one' she said without blinking. Asad leaned forward 'yes, it does'. An almost shy smile played on her lips, keeping in mind what Sonya had said to her she took the initiative to step forward and ask him first 'so does taking risks also involve meeting up on the weekend to watch a movie at the Odeon with a guy that you just met less than twenty four hours ago?' Asad couldn't stop smiling 'that would definitely be a risk...so it's a date?' he asked keeping his gaze on her, Zoya's insides started to flutter, at the rate her face was starting to heat up she was sure it was going to combust 'a date it is Mr Analyst'.
As Asad walked her back to the College he reached out for her arm 'Zoya...I finish at around six...if you are still around, would you like to walk back?' 'I would love to, see you at six'.
Since there talk at lunch time something had definitely changed between them, even though they talked and laughed, it was what they felt on the inside that made it all that much more different.
At the time they didn't know or realise that their walk home on one summers day would turn out to be completely life changing for the both of them, that their encounter would become the reason that they were together now. Haider may have said it for a different reason altogether but his words were true '...you can't open up a new chapter if you keep closing the book at the last one'. Zoya had opened up a new chapter in life, a chapter that was written by destiny, a chapter that was written for her and Asad.
As days turned into weeks and weeks into months there was no doubting that Asad and Zoya were head over heels, madly in love with one another. And it all started off with a walk, The Walk of Love
