Here is my attempt to write a Short-Story on Aahil and Sanam: Hope you like it!
He had been tired of fighting with her and wanted to put an end to this nikaah tamasha. Every night that she lay next to him oh so close, yet far he felt his heart skip several beats. Who was he kidding? Sanam was the woman of his dreams and he knew nothing could change that even though he masked it with all the anger on the exterior.
Earlier that day he had gotten angry with her for not letting him touch her trunk. What the hell had she been hiding?Did he know her at all?Why had Ammi forced him to marry her of all the people in the world?Aahil had no answers.
Ever since, he had been curious to know what lay in that trunk. I dont care he told himself time and again but his heart wanted to know her more, though it was futile according to him. He tip-toed into the room while Sanam was still busy wrapping up post dinner arrangements and tried walking towards the trunk that lay to the left of his German Closet. He had made sure that the door was closed as he did his fair share of examination. The Pandora's Box lay right in front of him. He now just had to open it. As he stepped towards the aluminium trunk his heart began to race once more. Was he doing the right thing? He didnt care. But the moment he got closer, his expression changed. Damn! It was locked. A scowl appeared on his face, and he turned around to see Sanam's scarlet face. Dont I have the right to live with some respect in this house?" fumed Sanam. Her eyes looked red.
"You can use that rack to put your clothes" he offered trying to evade her gaze.
"I dont need to" she shot back. "Waise bhi kuch hi dino ki toh mehmaan hoon"
Her words stung his heart deep because he knew she was right. This arrangement was not to last forever. Come 3 months, she would be gone. The thought was too much for him to take.
"M very tired!" he said walking into the washroom to change.
As soon as he left, Sanam quickly opened her trunk and took out the one priced possession that she held guarded. The picture of her Ammi and Abbu. Quickly locking it back, she placed the picture under her pillow. Arranging the bed, Sanam lay on her side staring at her trunk. " Happy Birthday Ammi" she said tears rolling down her cheeks. I wish, I wish I had gotten to spend a little more time with you. I would have made Pizza for you and shown you badi ammi has taught me the right recipe, just the way you like it. Abbu and I would have planned a surprise for you and we would have all sang songs all night.I am sure, you would have never let me marry a monster like Aahil and I would have had a happier life. Why are you not with me Ammi? Why? She quickly wiped her tears as she heard the door click and pretended to sleep.
By the time Aahil had walked in Sanam's eyes were already shut. Taking a few steps towards her he saw her innocent face and wondered for the nth time. Could an angel like her be capable of such devices she was being accused of? His heart didnt seem to agree.
Sensing his presence around her, Sanam opened her eyes and stared into his. Aahil turned away not knowing what to say.
Walking onto the other end lying on his side of the bed, he slowly dimmed the bed light and went off to sleep. A few moments later, he heard someone calling him. He didnt want to wake up, but the persistent calling broke his sleep. He opened his eyes and sat up shocked to see what lay in front of him. Sanam was standing right in front of him dressed in Jeans and a Shirt. For a second he was totally taken in by what he saw. His eyes were cheating him, playing games ensuring he would fall prey to this new turn of events. What was Sanam upto? And why was she dressed like this?
"Sanam tum..." he began when the lady in front of him spoke to him...
"Sometimes I wish she were like me, a little more fiery, more of a go-getter, care-free and happy.. "
Aahil rubbed his eyes asking "who?"
"Sanam" said the lady in front of him.. "she is too simple for this world.. and I wish I could be there to tell her, I am right here..."
Aahil was even the more confused now.. he turned to his side and to his horror saw Sanam fast asleep right next to him.
As he began to sweat profusely a smile appeared on the woman's face .."I am not Sanam.. I am Zoya.. Sanam's mother..."
"But.. Aahil began..."
"Take care of my baby" she said and then a bright light came in front of Aahil almost blinding his vision and by the time he could open his eyes again the woman had disappeared...
Aahil woke up startled from his sleep to realize he had actually been dreaming but sweating for real.. He looked at Sanam she had been fast asleep. As a strong wind blew across his face, a photo came flying from under the pillow and landed in Aahil's hands and what he saw left him with a chill in his spine.
There lay a picture of Asad and Zoya and the uncanny resemblance with the woman he had just seen in his dream left him shaken.
As he put the picture aside, he moved closer to Sanam who was fast asleep and stroked her forehead gently saying "I will take care of her, humesha" and frowned at what he had just said a moment ago.
