CHAPTER- 3
Goodbyes.
Why are they so difficult?
For one last time, Zoya looked back at her Jiju and Aapi. She was leaving them. They had always shared everything; love, smiles and sorrows. Come what may, they were always there, holding her back. But now it was just she against her whole new world.
Gathering all the courage she looked back and silently prayed to Allah for his help and blessings.
Just then a young man came, " As-Salaam-Alaikum, Ma'am I am Afzal, Mr. Khan's assistant"
" Wa-Alaikum-Salaam", she greeted him back.
"Ma'am the driver will take you home"; he said pointing towards a car.
"Thank you for everything, really. I am so sorry to bother you at this hour"
"No issues ma'am. I am doing the best I can. I know what sir must be going through with his mother's death. She was a very kind lady. You can always call me, if you need any help."
"Ji shukriya"
"One more thing Ma'am. Farida bi will be home when you reach."
"...well who is- "
"She took care of Dilshaad ma'am during her illness. Was there with the family for the last three years. Though she must be leaving now."
"Oh Okay. Thanks for telling me."
Zoya sat in the car with tears reappearing in her eyes as she parted away from her family. Suddenly she felt alone, which she was, but now it was clearer than ever.
-----------------
After a good thirty-minute ride, she reached the Khan Villa. It was a huge house and evidently stood out from the rest of the houses she had seen on that lane.
She rang the doorbell while the driver went on to fetch her luggage from the car. Her body was shivering with both anxiety and nervousness. This was her home now. But why doesn't it feel like it?
An old lady opened the door and she recalled what Afzal had said. She must be Farida bi.
"Ji aap Zoya hain?"
"haan "
"Andar ayiye begum sahiba...Hum aapka hi intezaar hi kar rahe the."
She entered the house and it took her a while to take in the aura of the place. The quietness of the surroundings was almost haunting. One look around and you can feel that it was never a home to happiness and smiles. However it was a very beautiful and an elegantly decorated house.
"Aap sonch rahin hogi ke me hospital kyon nahi ayi?", she had tears in her eyes, "Dilshaad ji ko iss baat ka abhaas tha ki unke jaane ka waqt aa gaye hai...woh chahti thi ki unki bahu ka swagat karne ke liye koi yahaan ho...", she choked back her tears and placed her hand on Zoya's forehead to give her blessings, "Ab yeh ghar aapko sabhalna hain Zoya...meri duyaein apke saath hamesha rahengi"
Zoya was moved by her kind words. She wasn't quiet sure but it was as if there was something else Farida bi wanted to say.
Farida led her to Asad's room and Zoya nervously followed. She noticed how it was completely different from where she lived, and how she lived. It was neat and organized, something very alien to Zoya's lifestyle back in the US. Everything from the walls to the bed sheets was in dark colors, unlike her love for everything bright. There were no pictures, family photos, nothing. Everything was plain and dark. With just one look around the room she could see how deeply their lives contrasted. But she knew that she wouldn't let these silly little things come in between their relationship. Things will magically work out, she thought. It was a new beginning, and beginnings are always tough.
"Begum sahiba, yeh Asad sahib ka kamra hai. Main driver se keh deti hoon ki apka saaman yahaan rakhvade."
"Ji Shukriya" she said politely.
" Zoya bete main subah hi yahaan se chali jaoongi...is hi liye abhi alvida keh deti hoon...apna khayal rakhna", Farida kissed her forehead and returned to her room leaving a thoughtful Zoya behind.
She went on to sit on one corner of the bed, feeling like a stranger in Asad's room. The events of the day kept playing in her head and it finally sunk in, she was married.
She kept looking outside the door, waiting for Asad to return but he didn't. She knew that he was the answer to her questions. Resting herself comfortably on the bed, she let her mind wander in various directions. The sudden uncertainty in her life was surely killing her. It's funny how she always thought she had everything planned out. From falling in love to marrying a prince charming...everything. But as they say, fate always has other plans.
---------------------
It was 8 in the morning, when she woke up. According to Zoya's habits this was an improvement. She was one of those late sleepers and even late risers.
She scanned the room but Asad was nowhere.
Where is he? Has he still not returned?
The room was exactly the way it was in the night, and that confirmed, Asad wasn't back yet.
She noticed that she was still in her bridal attire so she decided to change first before doing anything. She quickly took out new clothes from her suitcase and went inside the bathroom to freshen up.
Fifteen minutes later she came out wearing a simple blue kurti and salwaar. She made her way to the hall and found a note lying on the coffee table.
Dear Zoya,
Aaap so rahe the is liye maina apko jagana sahi nahin samjha...
Main aaj hi orphanage laut rahin hoon...
Allah Haafiz
Farida
Folding the note in her hand, she was only turning back to her room, when she heard a sound, of glass breaking. It seemed to have come from the bedroom upstairs.
She went up to the room and what she found was clearly unexpected. It was Asad. Sitting on the floor, with his head resting on the bed top. She noticed a broken photo frame lying just besides him. She couldn't see the photograph as it was lying upside down. It was the same thing that led to the sound. Probably Asad was holding it before it fell, she thought.
But why did he come in this room?
Maybe he saw me sleeping in his and thought it might be uncomfortable for both of us...or maybe not...
She moved towards him and gently placed a hand on his shoulder to wake him. The moment she did so, Asad stood up shoving her hand away. This scared Zoya a bit and when she saw his eyes blazing with anger, her fears took a whole new form.
Asad was outraged seeing Zoya in his mother's room. When he got back from where he was gone, he had almost forgotten all about her and the marriage. He didn't even see her in his room and had straightaway gone to Dilshad's. Seeing Zoya's face now reminded him of the relationship he was forced into and that angered him severely.
He roughly grabbed her arm and walked her out of the room. Zoya was petrified seeing him behave this way.
"I did not know you returned, and I am so s..s...sorry- .." she managed in a stammering voice. But Asad paid no attention to what she was saying and went down to his room. Zoya followed him.
--------------------
Asad was irritated seeing Zoya's bags in his room. He saw her entering the room behind him and that added to his annoyance.
"Take your things away...they don't belong here" He said harshly.
"B..but now this is m...mm..my room also..." She hesitated.
So she thinks that this marriage is for real'? He walked towards her and looked her in the eye which made Zoya extremely uncomfortable, " Look...all of this...our marriage... is nothing...it means nothing."
Something inside her crashed. "What do you mean by..n... nothing?". Tears started brimming out of her eyes. She couldn't understand what just happened. What does he mean by all of this?
"JUST GO." This time his voice was loud enough to make her shiver.
He didn't even wait for her response and headed towards the bathroom.
Asad's cold behavior left Zoya utterly confused and not to mention, scared. Her fears had escalated to new heights and she could almost see her world crumpling down.
He thinks that the marriage means nothing'? No...No Zoya...Probably he is not in his right mind...His mother's death has surely affected him and that's why he is saying all of this... She desperately tried to console herself. He just needs time. And so do I. Everything has moved too quickly...yes...all we need is some space and everything will be all right.. as Aapi said.
She managed to brush her fears away and picked up all her bags. For the time being, she decided to shift in some other room.
Zoya being the innocent girl she was couldn't understand the meaning behind Asad's words. She was still under the illusion that things would eventually improve, which might happen, but surely not so soon.

Note: For some reason the chapter didn't turn out the way I wanted it to be😭...sorry if I disappointed you all...But still leave me your comments and love!❤️
