Part 8
The night was dark, mystifying, the moon was sheltered by the murky looming clouds. The clouds shrouded the sky with an eerie, ominous blanket. It was colder than it was at daytime and the sound of the wind hitting at the walls and roof of the worn out hut scared Zoya a little. Her fright was doubled with the fear of being caught, but she didn't show it to Asad who was busy removing the detritus from the floor and placing the hay in such a way so as to create a makeshift bed to lie down on. She watched him as he cringed and grimaced at the sight of the shed they were in. Somehow it didn't surprise her that his OCD could kick in even at a time like this. Her heavy eyes drooped and she flopped down on the floor not caring about the dust and the filth. All she wanted to do was lie down and stretch her tired, aching limbs. Asad's hand tugged when she sat down and he looked at her disapprovingly and dropped the hay on the floor at being unsuccessful in making them a bed.
"Zoya I am trying to make something comfortable for us, don't sit on the dirty floor." He said as he grimaced at the floor.
"Mr Khan I honestly don't care. I want to sleep." She murmured sleepily and rested her head against the wall lightly; afraid it might crack and break.
"Fine you can sleep here but not on the floor please." He pointed at the heap of hay at a corner of the shed which apparently was their bed for the night. Zoya was in no mood to get up so she pretended to not hear him. Asad shook his head at her stubbornness and bent down to pick her up in his strong steady arms, which was little difficult due to the handcuffs but since the chain was long the task was not impossible. Zoya felt herself being lifted in the air and her eyes flew open.
"Mr Khan what are you doing?"
"I am not sitting on that filthy floor and since you are way too stubborn to even acknowledge what I said I was left with no other option but to carry you." With that he dropped her down on the hay which dipped down due to her weight. Asad rolled her over to the side and flopped down beside her letting out a sigh of satisfaction. They had to admit, the hay was not at all comfortable. It was tickling and even itching but it was better than the cold hard floor. The chilly wind that blew in through the window and the cracked roof made the hut very cold. They couldn't even make a small fire for two apparent reasons, one, Asad was in no mood to go out to hunt for some firewood, and two, even if he did, they didn't have any lighter or matchstick with them to light the fire and honestly that old trick of lighting a fire by rubbing two stones together only worked in movies. Asad looked at Zoya shivering slightly and he draped the stroll of his kurta around both of them. The stroll had become dirty but they had to make do with it. Zoya sighed and moved closer to him in order to seek his body warmth and he wrapped his arm around her waist pulling her closer than before. He looked out of the window into the dark sky. He had never seen so many stars in the sky before. The stars shined so bright that it looked like holes in the floor of heaven. The light of the moon shone through the window and fell on them, making Zoya's face look even more angelic. She looked very innocent as she slept peacefully, ok, not so peacefully. His sleep however was far from him; he didn't think he could sleep under the constant fear of being caught. He saw a strand of hair fall over her eyes and made her uncomfortable, he raised his hand and lightly tucked it behind her ear but the stubborn hair fell back on her eyes. He again placed it behind her ear and held it for a few seconds as if expecting it to stay in place.
"Go to sleep Mr Khan." Zoya whispered sleepily and pushed her head in the crook of his neck, her hand lying on his stomach. Asad looked down at their position and then went back to staring at the clouds. How did they reach here? To fighting and defying each other at every turn to being in each other's arms! A few weeks back if anyone had told him he would be holding Ms Farooqui like he was holding her now he would've laughed, rating the prediction as absurd and absolutely impossible, but here they were. He wanted to laugh at the turn of events, at how the destiny was playing. He wanted to stay away from her, he wanted her leave but destiny only brought them together and closer. As he stared at the sky he was reminded of the lines - "Dark was the night, cold was the floor." And he couldn't help wonder how apt it was to their current situation. The night was definitely cold and dark, the forest outside was eerily silent except for the sounds of the howling of the winds and the rustling of the bushes and dry leaves. He wondered if there were wild animals in the forest. That would be the last thing he'd want at a time such as this. He imagined them getting out of this situation without any more complications, he imagined them reaching the city somehow, he imagined them in the sanctuary of their home. Their home' that's what he said, and it somehow made him smile.
"Mr Khan stop smiling at the moon and go to sleep." Zoya giggled. Asad looked down at her to see her staring at him and giggling.
"You were awake?" he asked her.
"It's a little chilly, isn't it?" she shivered.
Asad pulled her closer if that was even possible and whispered, "I know, do you want me to make a small fire? We'll go search for some firewood and..." as soon as Zoya heard the word fire, she froze. She couldn't hear him further as flashes of the old burning building from her nightmares came back to her. She couldn't move as she saw the flames spread, she couldn't even hear Asad calling out to her. It was as if she was in some kind of trance and Asad had no idea how to get her out of it. He shook her and called out to her.
"Huh?" she replied in a daze.
"What happened? You kind of zoned out for a minute. Are you alright?" he asked concerned about her health.
"Yeah, it-it's nothing. I don't think a fire is necessary." She replied.
"Are you sure? You've suddenly gone pale and cold." He rubbed her hands to create some warmth.
"I don't think a fire is necessary." She repeated her earlier sentence.
"Ok, ok calm down." He patted her head and encouraged her to go back to sleep. Zoya placed her head on his chest and closed her eyes, praying to god for not giving her anymore nightmares, the night was no less scary and she just wanted it to get over already.
Asad could hear her breathing going back to normal and he knew she was asleep. He tried closing his eyes in order to get some sleep himself but whenever he closed his eyes the image Zoya's pale and shock face came back to him. Something was definitely up with her but he didn't know what it was. If only she could open to him, if only she could tell him her fears. He knew that wouldn't happen though, maybe she didn't trust him enough with her secrets and why should she? He had never trusted her and he never even gave her a reason to trust him. If she was going through something then he clearly didn't expect her to open up to him, after all he was not a special person in her life, he didn't think he was her favourite person in the house but it somehow still hurt him that she couldn't share her fears to him. He flicked off the lone tear that had rolled off his cheek and rested his head on top of hers trying to get some sleep. He had a feeling tomorrow was going to be a long day.
