Part 5
She stood up and hugged Mariam just then they heard the giggling of some girls and Mariam's mother asking her to come out if she was dressed. Mariam looked at Zoya with wide, frightened eyes, Zoya too looked at the door trying to find a way out of it.
"There is a car waiting for me outside, cover your head with your dupatta and run." Zoya spoke quickly while moving toward the bed and picking up Mariam's bridal suit.
"But baaji…"
"Don't think Mariam, just go, and run away from here. The car will take you to Bhopal then you can meet your bhaijaan there." Zoya pleaded to her while wearing the kurta of Mariam's bridal dress swiftly.
"Baaji what are you-" Mariam asked but she was cut off by Zoya.
"I need to distract everyone at least until you are away from this place, you don't need to worry about me I'll handle everything here. You go, run, and please take care of yourself. Here take some money, you might need it on the way." She patted her head lovingly and helped Mariam climb out the window. Mariam stopped and held Zoya's hands.
"I can't risk your life baaji." She sobbed.
"Don't worry Mariam. I am safe and even if I am not, I have Mr Khan with me. He won't let anything happen to me." Zoya said softly. She had this hope that her Mr Khan will make everything alright, he was always there when she was in trouble, yeah that's a different thing that she was in trouble because of him but he never let anything happen to her and she knew even this time he would be there by her side, protecting her from everyone. They heard the knocking on the door and Zoya once again pleaded Mariam to go, she reassured her over and over again that she was safe and that nothing would happen to her. She saw her run away towards the car and she turned back to wear Mariam's sharara, she then covered her head with the dupatta so that no one could see her face and sat down on the middle of the bed. She had absolutely no idea where this would take her, she had no plans in her mind, she had just acted on her impulse and now that Mariam was gone, fear gripped her. Her heart was beating fast like a hummingbird and she found it difficult to breathe. She clutched the dupatta tightly in her hand and prayed silently to God for Mariam's safety and her safety.
The door opened and Mariam's mother walked in with her sisters, they looked at Zoya clad in Mariam's bridal dress and mistook her for Mariam.
"Dekh Mariam tu beete hue kal ki baton ko bhool ja, jo hona tha woh ho gaya ab tu thoda muskura aur apne aane wale kal ke bare main soch." Mariam's mother whispered into Zoya's ears. Zoya tried choked back the tears that were threatening to spill and she knew she did the right thing in sending Mariam away, there was no way Mariam could've lived happily. They walked out and panic seized her. What was she to do now? How would she stop the nikaah? She moved as slowly as possible, stalling the time to try to buy her some time to come up with a plan to get out of the mess that she created for herself. Through the thin veil she could see Asad's face. She felt this uncontrollable urge to go to him, to shout out to him to take her away from here but she knew she couldn't. A curtain was separating the men and the women. Zoya was made to sit, her eyes were fixed on Asad, willing him to look at her and recognize her but he didn't look at her. She tried shuffling her feet to get his attention but he was too deep in his thoughts to look at her. At that moment she didn't even mind throwing a rock at him to get his attention. Mariam's mother chided her and asked to stop fidgeting. She sat silently, she heard the Qazi recite the verses and her heart sank a little. She needed to do something fast. Her eyes fell upon the mobile phone that was in her hand and she realized she hadn't let go of her phone all this while. She thanked her lucky stars and very subtly so as to not let anyone see or hear her, opened her phonebook and scrolled through the pre-programmed numbers, she stopped when she saw the name 'Jahapanah' and quickly pressed the call button. She waited for Asad to pick up the phone and kept chanting "Please answer the phone" over and over in her mind like a mantra, willing him to for once glance at his phone. Through the translucent dupatta she could see Asad look down at his phone and then slowly bring it to his ears. She heaved a sigh of relief and whispered in a hushed voice, "Mr Khan, it's me Zoya."
oOo
Asad saw Zoya's name flash on his mobile and he grudgingly pressed the accept button, he brought the phone towards his ears hoping to hear her loud voice but instead he heard a very soft and low voice.
"Mr Khan, it's me Zoya."
"Listen Ms Farooqui I don't want to talk to you right now, I'll call you when the wedding is over."
"Mr Khan tab tak bohot der ho jayegi."
"I don't have time right now for you." He said with gritted teeth.
"Ok Mr Khan after the wedding is over you can call me to congratulate me for my wedding." She huffed. Asad was shocked and he looked at the phone with a muddled expression.
"Mr Khan, please look towards the bride." She pleaded him. Asad looked at the woman in the bridal dress and saw Zoya lift the dupatta, revealing her face a little and waved her hand at him. Asad's eyes widened in shock and it took him a few seconds to realize that the girl sitting in place of the bride was not Mariam but Zoya. He looked around to check whether anyone saw her but all were either looking at the Qazi or the groom.
"Mr Khan don't start yelling at me, I'll explain everything to you, just help me please."
He disconnected the call and sat back, still shocked at the way things were turning out. He clamped his hands on his mouth and raked his brain to come up with something but his mind had refused to work. He looked at the men from the groom's side and he knew this was not going to go down well with them. He cursed his fate and dreaded coming to Mangalpur. He would have been quietly sitting in his house, reading a novel, sipping his favorite coffee and Zoya would be all over the house, creating a mess of his otherwise neat and clean house, chatting loudly and irritating him but no, he was here, in Mangalpur thinking about ways to escape this situation scot free and Zoya was too busy playing bride. Suddenly that life sounded too good as compared to the situation he was in right now.
He heard the Qazi ask the groom,
"Kya aapko yeh nikaah Qubool Hai?"
"Qubool Hai." Came the confident and loud reply from the groom. Asad's heart sank and he knew he needed to think something fast before Zoya got married to the jerk-face.
The Qazi then turned towards the bride. Asad did not wait to hear anything; he sprang up from his seat and moved towards the back door.
oOo
When the groom gave his consent for the marriage Zoya panicked, she looked at Asad. What was he doing? Or a better question would be why was he not doing anything? She saw him get up and make his way toward the back door and her eyes widened. He was going? He was just going to leave her alone to sort everything out? She knew he must be angry for pulling out this stunt but she was shocked that this time he was not going to save her. Maybe she spoke too soon, she was over confident with the trust she had on him, he clearly didn't trust her enough. Tears formed in her eyes and she barely heard the Qazi asking for her consent to the marriage. She felt someone nudge her arms and she was snapped back to the present. Everyone was waiting for her answer, she blinked back the tears that had threatened to flow. She took a deep breath and answered back in a voice that was loud and clear,
"Qubool nahi hai!"
People gasped at her response, she took advantage of the situation and got up to run away, she took the flower plate from the woman standing beside her, threw it at the groom and ran out of the house.

Seriously I'm not even going to ask to leave comments because apart from a handful of people no one actually bothers to drop in a comment. It's not easy to give back to back updates. It takes a lot of time to type the story but for ya'll it wouldn't even take a minute to comment, plus you increase your posts so I don't really get why hardly anyone comments. Writers would like some incentive to continue writing, so apart from this SS being Ankie's demand I would like more reasons to continue this.
