It's in his character. Though its grown to realize that no one's appearance makes the person who he/she is, he is yet to learn to differentiate between whom he should really trust or not. Plus he has always lived with this fear that by some twist of fate he'll end up being like his dad, not that he does not trust himself, but he does not trust the blood he is born with. Hence the play of the 'bewafai virasat mai mili hai' dialogue and his character believing he can be so wrong.
Zoya's love has always healed Asad, and surely that is what will get him out of this self guilt and remorse :)
