Chapter 2

They went to the party hall where arrangements for the dance party in the evening were going on. Jeh and T were busy instructing the workers about the decorations and food and drinks arrangements when Misha and Kabir entered with Pia. Jeh beamed at Pia and gave her a warm hug and exclaimed: It's so good to see you again Pia. I was so glad to hear that you guys have decided to settle down in Mumbai too. Now that all my sisters are in the same city, I can finally have some sense of relief. Otherwise I always was worried about you.

Pia replied back: Aww.. bhai... you care and worry too much about us.

Jeh: What to do sis? I am the only brother you three have, so I naturally feel protective towards you and care for you all.

Just then T spotted Pia and came and hugged her and exclaimed: Pia!! So good to see you again! And you are glowing even more after marriage. I am sure its the glow of Abhay's love.

Pia: Bhabhs, stop teasing me.

T: Ok, only if u stop calling me Bhabhs. That's so old fashioned. Call me T. By the way why don't you stay with us till Abhay comes here? I can introduce you to all the important people worth knowing.

Pia: That's so nice of you T. But till Abhay comes back, I have to decide on, buy and make liveable a house in Navi Mumbai itself and since Misha also lives in Navi Mumbai, it will be easier for me to search around staying with her.

T: Ya, I understand. But anytime you feel like, just don't hesitate to drop in, ok. You are always welcome to our house. We both adore you. It was only you who convinced Jeh's mom for our marriage and that has made us adore you even more.

Pia: Oh come on T. I had to do at least this much for my brother. Anyway leave all that and let's get on with the preparations.

With that all of them got busy making preparations for the different ceremonies leading to the wedding. In the evening all the guests arrived for the Sangeet ceremony cum Dance party where Siddhartha and Alina were also present. Siddhartha complained to Pia: What is this? How dare that idiot skip my wedding?

Pia replied: Trust me Siddhartha, he himself was very sad about it. But because of his sudden promotion, lot of work suddenly landed up due to change or responsibility. And so he was just not getting any leave.

Siddhartha: How come you marry such a workaholic? It's been just one month to your marriage and he has sent you away from him for one month. I don't think Alina is going to get a minute away from me for anytime so soon.

He winked at Alina who blushed while Pia laughed and replied while laughing: well actually I knew that no one else would marry such a work machine and so I took pity on him and married him!

Siddhartha: Aww.. you have such noble nature.

The rest of the evening and the ceremonies passed on in such laughter and fun and soon the wedding was over and Siddhartha and Alina had left for their honeymoon. The next day Pia decided to start her house hunt. Kabir had a few friends who were leading house agents in that part of Mumbai and so on their suggestion she went around looking for various houses. She told them clearly that she is looking for a sea facing bungalow and so that narrowed down the choices quite a bit. She had seen almost all the houses the agents had to offer in two days. She was sitting in the balcony of Misha's house having her evening tea when suddenly she remembered about that house on the Palm Beach Road. She called up the agent and enquired if the house was still available for sale and the agents promised that they will let her know by next morning. After talking to Abhay on phone and telling him about the house she has seen, she went off to sleep. Next morning one of the agents called her up and told her that the house she mentioned is indeed available and if she would like, he can arrange for a visit today itself. Pia agreed and after an hour she was standing outside the door of the house no. 10 at Palm Beach Road admiring its exterior decor and view.

She rung the bell and an old lady around 60 years old opened the door. He house agent had already informed Pia that this house presently was owned and resided by an old widow Mrs Deshmukh who after her husband's death last month had wanted to move out of India and settle with her two sons who both were in Canada. Pia introduced herself and showed the letter from the house agent and Mrs. Deshmukh warmly let her in and started showing her the house around. Pia liked the house. In fact in her mind she had already started planning the changes she would make to the house. The furniture would have to be completely replaced. It was too old fashioned. The house was a duplex. Pia had already looked through the first floor which had one master bedroom, one guest room, one store room and one small bedroom. She was not to proceed to see the ground floor which had a large living room, a big enough kitchen, a separate drawing room for visitors, a study room and one master bedroom. And it was then while descending the stairs that she suddenly felt a shiver of fear run through her spine. It felt eerie and Pia felt strange why all of a sudden she felt that way. She tried to ask Mrs. Deshmukh in a non-offensive manner: errmm.. Mrs Deshmukh, Is this house err.. supposed to be haunted? I mean did you ever felt any thing out of the place in the house.

Mrs. Deskhmuukh looked almost indignant and replied: Of course not. I have been living here for last ten years, and never felt anything out of the place. Are there any rumours being spread about my house? What gave such a silly idea to you? Your generation is supposed to be scientific and not believe in such things!

Pia was now feeling stupid for asking such a stupid question because as soon as that feeling had come, it had also disappeared. She was now standing in the magnificent living room of the house and she felt irritated that how could she doubt such a beautiful house to be haunted. The house was beautiful and felt like home. Pia had already made up her mind to buy the house and so she told Mrs. Deshmukh that she is interested in the house, but would finalize everything only after talking to her agent. Mrs. Deshmukh agreed and as Pia was about to leave, she called her back and asked:

Ermm Mrs. Raichand, if you don't mind my request, then can you keep my current domestic help under your employment. Actually she has been here in this house with us for last 10 years and now she is very upset about leaving. She is absolutely great at all the household work and is solely responsible for keeping this house so clean that it shines. Though she is highly imaginative and slightly eccentric and sometimes would give you what she decides to make rather than what you want to eat, but she is an excellent cook too. So, if you don't mind it can you employ her? The poor lady has no family and she had begun to consider this home as her own over the years. With loss of my employment she is also afraid of losing a roof on her head.

Pia felt sorry for the woman and assured Mrs. Deshmukh that if she buys the house, she would definitely consider employing her. She then proceeded to the agent office to finalize the deal for the house.
