"You will?" jey's face lit up in smiles. "That's great! You'll need to let me know when you have a sitter. You've got my number."
pia grinned at his enthusiasm, "I do. My Dad's back from his holiday on Friday, so maybe after that?"
It was only a week until her twenty five birthday, not a day she was looking forward to, she'd never envisaged she'd be a divorced single parent. But her father was determined not to let her wallow in this.
As soon as he got back from his trip, he revealed his plan for her birthday. He'd booked them into a restaurant, the new offering from a celebrity chef, he had also arranged for abhay's parents to babysit.
pia was glad she'd had the chance to shop just after Christmas, the cornflower blue short dress suited her curvy figure and the matching colored shoes were elegant. She felt a million dollars as her father picked her up for the drive to the restaurant, mom grinned when she saw her.
"You look fantastic!"
pia smiled, "I was hoping for a young look, I am twenty five after all!"
The older woman shook her head, "you don't look any older than when I used to teach you fifteen years ago! I wish time had been that kind to me!" pia scoffed loudly. mom was a very glamorous woman, and didn't look anywhere near her age.
The restaurant was busy, it had recently opened and the place was buzzing, every table was busy and she recognized a lot of faces from TV and music.
"How did you manage to get us a table here?" she asked. "It looks like half of OK magazine regulars are here!"
Her father smiled rather awkwardly, "well you'll hate me saying this, but there was some underhand tactics. I think they were expecting abhay! He's the one who sorted it."
She laughed, not the reaction he had expected, "that's great! I finally get something worthwhile out of him! Brilliant!"
Her father raised an eyebrow suspiciously, "really?"
"I've spent the last year wishing I'd never set eyes on the man, it's about time we got something positive out of him! So he's back from Mexico then?"
He shrugged, "I emailed him, I don't know where he is. But he did reply. So I can't complain."
"I'm surprised he hasn't invited himself along, that'd be typical!"
Finally a waiter came to escort them to their table, and sat there smug as anything was her ex-husband. "abhay!" she hissed, "what are you doing here?"
He grinned, sprawling an arm along the back of the seat next to him, "your father asked me to book a table for your birthday!"
She was aware that the tension was making the whole room suspicious, so she dropped into the chair next to him, "and what made you think that it was an invite to include you? One day I wanted a relaxing celebration, and instead I get this!"
Shrugging he stood to shake her father's hand, and realized there wasn't a hint of surprise there, it seemed that may be her father and abhay had some sort of agreement. It was even more obvious when after ten minutes her father had a phone call, something about a burst pipe, meaning he and mom had to leave immediately.
Sitting opposite abhay she felt like crying, "Why are you doing this to me? Why can't you just let me live my life?"
He looked so healthy with his tan, his sun bleached hair, his eyes twinkled as he looked at her, "it's your birthday, can't I pass on my best wishes?"
She leaned across the table, uncaring that her snarl was unattractive, "then send me a bloody card, there was no need for this." She gestured around them, "you've been on a three week holiday with the bitch who called our children brats, and now you've orchestrated what? A romantic meal for two? Just WHAT is your intention?"
Suddenly he didn't look quite so confident, so she kept going, "is this just more retaliation because I told you that you have no control, no rights over me? Is this just another form of revenge?"
He shrugged, "it's your birthday, you are the mother of my children...can't I buy you a meal?"
She was sure steam was escaping her ears, the blood was pounding in her head as she felt she was about to explode, "you had to do this underhand to make sure I'd turn up though. You knew I wouldn't want this, but yet again abhay raichand proves a point." She gestured to a waiter and asked for her coat. "I can't do this anymore abhay, I have asked you time and time again to leave me alone, but you insist on making my life hell!"
"Is that how you see me?" He stood gesturing for his own coat. "Really?"
Blinking rapidly, fighting the welling tears she turned to him, "you have ruined everything for me abhay, I don't even know my father now it appears. I can't describe the ways you've hurt me. Yet you seem to get a perverse pleasure out of everything you do." Not waiting for her coat, she grabbed her bag and stormed out of the restaurant as fast as she could.
Outside a wall of paparazzi blocked her way and as she tried to step through them, but then jostling...her ridiculous heels meant that she teetered and almost fell. A firm hand rescued her, then she was pulled into the familiar embrace of abhay as he literally hit people out of the way and helped her into a cab. Sitting back on the seat, she stared at him.
He raised a hand, "I get it, you hate me...I suppose I can see this wasn't the most wise thing to do."
"You got that right!"
He pulled the car over a few streets away and handed a wad of cash to the driver, "take her wherever she wants to go." Then without even a glance back, he strode off into the night.
As the car cut through the miles back to her house, she fumed. Why wouldn't he even try to explain? To justify? To even look like he wanted to improve their relationship.
She couldn't go home, so feeling sad, vulnerable, she did a thing she knew she might regret, she called jey.
"I'm in the pub, the Lighthouse? Where are you?" it was loud and she could only just make out his voice.
"In a cab on the way back from London. I'm not really up to busy, to people."
"Meet me at the cafe then, it's closed as its Sunday, but I have a key. I can make us coffee?"
She sank back into the car seat, "perfect!"
Half an hour later, the car stopped outside the cafe, she could see a light on, but the sign said closed and the door was locked. She tapped gently, and was rewarded by the sight of jey cutting through the tables towards her.
"Hey!" he opened the door and saw she was looking both beautiful and dreadful. "I want to tell you how beautiful you look, but I get the feeling you have had a bad night! So I'll just offer coffee?"
"Perfect response for the second time tonight!"
"So," he asked as he laid a mug of coffee in front of her, "You look glammed up, have you been somewhere nice?"
She shrugged, "out for dinner, it's my birthday. But my ex-husband gate crashed the party..." She knew her face spoke volumes.
"I take it that didn't go down well?"
She shook her head, "I don't need mind games." She sipped at her coffee and sighed in relief, "I'm just glad to be away from it all, from him."
"And the children?"
"With his parents." Suddenly the atmosphere was tense all over again.
"So you've got the night to yourself?"
pia stood up, "I don't think I should be here, my head's in the clouds..."
He flew up to reach for her wrist, pulling her back to face him, "pia, please! Don't run away."
She was close to him, too close, she could feel his breath on her cheek, and she daren't look up for fear of what she'd see in his eyes. He reached out to cup her chin, but she fought his intention to look into her eyes.
"pia you've given me loads of reasons why this is wrong, but you know how I feel about you, and at no point have you turned around and said you don't like me, don't find me attractive. If you look me in the eyes and tell me you that you don't want me to kiss you, then I'll walk away, I won't bother you again!"
She raised her eyes, his were inches from hers, watching her every move. She could see the gold flecks in the brown surrounding his black pupils that seemed to grow as she stared at them, he smelt delicious, masculine, heady...in her mind in the split second that she had to make the decision, she realized that it had been over a year since she'd even be touched by a man, well more than a brotherly/fatherly hug. Her body burned to be hugged, to be caressed, loved.
With a sigh, she kiss on his cheek and hug him tightly .
She pulled back and smiled to see jey .
"You ok?" she whispered.
He nodded, still staring at her in wonder, "just wasn't expecting that!" His voice was hoarse and she realized how aroused, how emotional, how sweet he was.
pia smiled, "well at least it got rid of that awkwardness, hey?"
They stayed there against the closed front door, huging. After far too long really, pia suddenly realized that they were in fact exposed to the street, and she had no intention of becoming such an exhibitionist.
"People can see us," she said.and its starter raining . "Can we at least move away from the doorway?"
He lifted his head and looked at her, "I don't want to move, I'm worried I'll break whatever spell has made you want u be with me!"
Chuckling, she disentangled herself from him, "it's not a spell. I do like you...you know I have more worries than I should, but I guess that's the mother in me."
Taking both her hands in his, he smiled at her, "so what happens now?"
She shrugged, "I fancy a coffee".
"Is lovely good?" he asked as he led her back to their table, "cos it kind of sounds a bit...tame?"
She smiled picking up her mug, "sounds like there might be a point you can prove a little later?"
After coffee he found a bottle of wine, and they made short work of that too.
"I should really go jey; I've had a lovely evening!"
"There's that word again!" he reached for her hand and kissed her palm. "Do you have to leave? I live upstairs..."
"How convenient! But we've already done coffee!"
He grinned, "I have more than coffee on my mind."
She nodded, "I'm a bit battle scarred jey, I don't think I'm ready for anything more...not yet...I'm all a bit fragile." She knew both her resolve and her defenses were at rock bottom.
"Why don't you come up to the flat, we'll watch some TV, just relax. I don't expect anything else. But I like your company pia."
"Can I borrow something a bit more lounge worthy than this dress, it may look nice but it's not the most comfortable becaus it already wet in rain!"
Half an hour later she was stretched out on his sofa, with another glass of wine watching TV, she was wearing a t-shirt of his and a pair of joggers rolled up at the waist and ankle. jey was sat on the floor half turned towards her laughing as much at her laughing as the film on TV.
"Will you stay here? Tonight. Just stay, no funny business, just sleep?"
She checked her phone; there were no messages from anyone, so she nodded, "Ok. But no trying it on, you hear?"
It was comforting to fall asleep on sofa.
