Punjabi- The Language

Punjab, as well all know is undeniably a broad panorama blessed with beauty and splendour. It is a nation, which has gained popularity and interest on a global scale, including its language. Punjabi, being this states main language is the eleventh most popular language in the world! An astonishing 100 million people in the state itself speak Punjabi.

Being an ancient language with an Indo-European origin, Punjabi is the successor of the language Sauraseni Prakrit. Whilst people in the West of Punjabi prefer to speak Hindi the case is opposite in East Punjab.

The script used in Punjabi language is Gurmukhi, which is based on Devanagri. There are two major varieties of Punjabi. The western variety is known as Lahnda, while the eastern variety is known as Gurmukhi. Additionally, Punjabi is both a fusion and a tonal language.

Modern Punjabi borrows extensively from other languages, like Hindi, Persian, Urdu and English. Recently Punjabi has traversed to different destinations across the world, where it gets molded as per the local vocabulary.
