Chapter 4

The same night in Mansi's room Aaman came to talk about Aarti "Manu our new maid Aarti looks like bade mamma just take a look at this pictures he had an old family album with him the two siblings perused the pictures they found exactly what they were looking for the resemblance between Aarti and their great grand mother the eyes, cheek bones, shape of their nose, their long neck both were tall and hourglass shape.

"Bhayia they could be mother and daughter but we can find out you know through DNA test "

"And how are we suppose to do that smarty pants?

"Well I can go into her room take the hairs from her comb or brush and go into mamaji mami ji room and do the same and we can go to the hospital lab or private lab and make a request the information is on the net Bhayia we can do this' said an excited Mansi

"And the money to pay for this?

"Well we have our allowance and I have some saved

"Okay Manu tomorrow we will put our plan into action

The following day

"Kamla inform Aarti I want to see her in my study said Vijay

Aarti was helping cut vegetables for breakfast "MR Singh want you to go to his study now said Kamla.

"Sir you called for me

"Yes beta I need to fill out some information about you for your employment here and I need you to accompany me to the Drs Office for a medical check-up, don't worry beta this is all routine and necessary in case of an emergency you understand.

Aarti saw kindness in Mr Singh's eyes and decided to comply with his request, they left immediately after breakfast to the Drs office.

Mrs Savitri Singh contacted her Dr and questioned all about DNA testing she told her about how to get a sample from Aarti Mrs Singh took the direct approach "Aarti beta your nails are long and poorly kept when you serve some one and they notice your hands they will refuse to take anything from you

Aarti thought her hand and nails were cleaned so she felt bad at the statement from her employer's wife it sounded like an insult.

"Come here beta let me see your hand Savitri patted the seat next to her, Aarti came and sat feeling a bit uncomfortable Savitri took her hand and she clipped her nails shaping them for Aarti, the confused girl was wondering what is going on why is this lady being so nice to her.

"Beta you have nice hands here use this cream at bed time on your body after you shower and you should wear some nail polish here let me see your toes'

"No madam ji I cant allow you to touch my foot

"Why beta you are like a child to me

"Yes madam but I am your maid and I am younger to you I am supposed to touch your feet not the other way around

"Beta I am like your mother and mother's have rights on their children, okay then you clip your nails here don't go stay here when Aarti was getting up to leave.

After she left Savitri had her nail clippings to use for her DNA testing, she spent the afternoon in the lad arranging her test.

In all three cases the results were due in a couple of days.

That evening Yash left work early to visit Mr Singh at home under the pretext of business matters. Aarti was asked to serve them tea and snacks in the study.

"Well hello there we meet again said Yash

"Namaste Sir replied Aarti taking her time to pour the tea and serve the samosa

"Don't call me sir it makes me feel so old call m Yash'

"I can't do that sir I am a maid here and you are a guest of my employer

"Uncle ji do you mind if she call me Yash?

"No beta Aarti Beti go ahead and call him Yash I won't mind Vijay smiled at them.

Aarti thought this family is strange.

When Aaman, and Mansi arrived from collage and found their friend Yash there and they invited him to stay for dinner to which Vijay and Savitri agreed to.

Aarti was kept close at hand to serve the friends, Yash kept stealing looks at her she had long beautiful hair kept in a single plait, no makeup or jewellery and she still very beautiful a refreshing change from the painted fake girls he was accustomed with. He observed her retreating figure thinking tall and elegant even if her clothes are old and faded.

At the dinner table "Aarti beta serves Yash some Karlie [bitter gourd] it is one of his favourite dish said Savitri "Here serve him this pointing to the curry channa dish [chick peas] and be careful don't spill not even a drop Yash likes everything perfect; Savitri was determine for both to get to know each other and so she wanted Aarti to serve him so she can learn his favourite foods and his preference for perfection; she had always loved Yash and why not he is the son of her best friend Radha whom she loved as her sister, if that b***h G3 did not interfere in her life Yash would have had his mother's love growing up so she tried to fill the gap every time he came here she would pamper him just like Aaman, and Mansi.

"That is not fair mami ji what about us pouted Aaman

"Beta Yash is our guest you are our naughty beta I will serve you replied a smiling Savitri standing to help serve

"Mami ji I also have to learn to serve my family their meals so you sit I will serve with Aarti said Mansi taking the dish from Kamala's hand

Vijay's mother was silently watching the drama "I wonder if Savitri suspects that this girl is her daughter after all a mother's heart will always recognize her child she thought.

After dinner Yash spent some more time discussing a project with Mr. Singh they were trying to get Aaman involved in the business. Mansi was determine to help Aarti so she also helped clear the dinner table she insisted to sit and talk with Aarti while she did the dishes, stayed while the servants had their dinner Kamala and the rest felt strange because this was very much unlike the young Miss who would be in her room listening music or enjoying with her friends, not socializing with the help.

Mansi wanted to know everything about Aarti's life what it was like growing up in the orphanage "Aarti I feel connected with you because bhayia and I lost our parents as young kids, if Mamaji and Mamiji did not take us in we would have been in an orphanage ourselves.

Aarti but you have your nanaji and naniji surely they would of taken you in

Mansi made a funny face confusing Aarti Kamala knew what it meant and she will not share in the presence of the other servants. I suppose so, mamaji and mami ji have been our parents they miss their daughter so we filled in the void

"Their daughter what happened? Is she dead? asked a curious confused Aarti

"Aarti that is not your concern you are here to work not get involved in your employer's family business scolded kamala

Mansi looked at Kamala and responded "I will tell Aarti my cousin sister was kidnapped when she was ten months old from the gardens out front nanaji and naniji were looking after her while mama ji and Mamiji were on holidays, that happened a little over seventeen years ago

Aarti was shocked with this news "Is she dead?

"Nobody knows the police never found out who the criminals were and nothing was ever heard again about the baby mamaji and mamai ji miss her a lot they have loved bhayia and I a lot but we know they miss their child very much

"Aarti your education you were allowed to attend school? How far did you reach I can help you if you want Mansi offered

"Thanks Miss I completed until tenth grade two years ago there was not enough funds for any of us to go further and I tried working but the only job I could get was as a cleaner in a dance studio that too part time, I like drawing so I used to sit on the pavement in the market and did portraits for the tourist I had enough money for food and art supplies. Aarti explained.

"I can help you and teach you about computers I am sure bhayia will help Mamiji can help also she help us with our projects I am sure she won't mind at all

"Miss Mansi your nanaji and nani ji would not approve off this you being friendly with the help stated Kamala.

Mansi made a funny face "So they don't care about me why would I care about what they think?

Aarti answered "Because Miss they are your nana ji and nani ji and you should respect your elders

Savitri was standing unseen outside the kitchen and heard the conversation she vowed that her daughter will receive all the love she missed out on and get an education and art training if she wants.

Yash wanted to see Aarti before he left so he asked Aaman to order tea for them Aarti came and he asked "Aarti did you make this?

"No sir I can't cook only clean

"You never learned "

"No but I will try too now that I am working here

"Don't you want to do something else?

"I don't have much education Sir and I am an orphan what kind of jobs will I find?

Aaman said "Aarti I can help you with your studies.

"See Aarti I told bhayia would help> responded Mansi entering the room

Yash said "Even I can help when I visit, Aarti don't give up none of us knows what the future will bring

Aarti smiled "Thanks everyone for your kindness

"it not kindness but an offer of friendship Aarti answered Yash smiling at her.

Vijay heard the conversation and felt proud of his niece, and nephew and he loved Yash as his son. Things were looking good the results of the DNA will be known in a couple of days Maji said bauji would be returning the following day now he is waiting to observe his father's reaction.

Chapter 5

The morning started with Vijay's mother singing religious songs she was worried because her husband would be returning this morning from weeks of pilgrimage; his reaction when he see Aarti was the source of stress to her so she prayed for guidance and patience of her husband that he would not act foolishly impulsive, her thoughts were causing her so much stress now her head hurt.

He thoughts as follows

Mr. Singh senior never approved of their bahu he believed that she was below their standards but fear of losing the friendship and the business of the Scindhia he caved in to their request to accept Savitri as their bahu. Mr Singh thought his son would divorce her after a suitable time because he believed his son was a modern man and the traditional Savitri would of cramp his style, but Veer loved her and he was proud of her achievements as a successful lawyer

When Savitri became pregnant there were complications she was advised to abort the child but she refused and Veer supported her the elder Singh actually hoped and prayed for her to die so their son can marry the woman of their choice but god saved both mother and child; she gave birth to a healthy daughter via c section. They were angry a girl was not accepted by them they wanted a son to carry their name forward but they were careful never to showed their resentment openly. Then they got the news that due to complications caused by both her pregnancy and the c section Savatri would never have another child.

This devastated the couple but they thanked god for their cute bundle of blessing Aarti she was loved and they thought that her grandparents loved her despite the fact that the older couple never spent much time with her.

Mr Singh wanted the duo gone from his son's life so he continued his plotting and parading of rich available women in front of his son but Veer loved Savitri and he was devoted to her and their baby.

When their plan was successful and the baby was gone from their life they secretly hoped that Savatri would commit suicide, be committed to a mental hospital or Veer would blame her and divorce her but nothing like that happened instead their love and support for each other grew.

Now he was due to arrive before breakfast. Lord give him the courage to accept this.

"Ma ji here is your milk take you pills "offered Savatri " I am going to make sure bauji favourite dishes are made for his breakfast and send the driver to collect him from the station she continued.

When she walked to the kitchen she saw Aarti cleaning the floors of the dining room she said "Beta why are you moping help with breakfast

"Madam it is my job, and I don't know how to cook

"Come I will teach you

"Madam please let me finish the cleaning, I can help with lunch and if you want you can show me then I will be happy to learn

"Okay beta but there are so many things I want to teach you'

"Why madam "

"You are young just like Mansi and don't have parents to guide you I feel responsible for you

"Madam may I ask this do you feel the same responsibility to all your servants?

"Yes I do beta as your employers were are responsible for you all specially those who live here away from their family

Mr Veer Singh came across to them "Savatri I need your help on an urgent matter please come

Mr Singh senior arrived on time he had with him lots of religious books, and some token gifts for Savatri, the family, and servants; since his arrival he kept looking at the young maid she had a striking resemblance to his late mother in her youth. They could have been mother and daughter so close was the resemblance and the only difference he could see was this girl is tall while his mother was short, even their voice had similarities one being most prominent the slight huskiness. His dear wife kept looking at him for any reaction he knew she was nervous about their secret coming out, and what his reaction to this new development would be. It also seemed to him that his entire family was closely watching him for his reaction but none mention anything. The girl served him his meal and she stood quietly awaiting their orders, after breakfast he observed her cleaning the table and doing the dishes.

Mansi and Aaman came to him took his blessings and left for collage.

Savatri was working part time with a local NGO and she had an early meeting to attend she told Aarti to cut certain vegetables for lunch and clean rice and peas she would show her how to make a dish when she returns. When she realized her in laws were watching she told Aarti to clean the bedrooms and upstairs corridors. Savatri did not want her saasural to think she was favouring Aarti.

Mr. Veer left for his office with two minds he did not trust his father but did not want he him to be suspicious of his action. Veer looked towards Aarti who was busy in the kitchen.

Yash was at work but his mind kept thinking of Aarti and her situation he genuinely wanted to assist her but something about her demeanour told him that she would prefer to work hard to make something of herself so he came up with a plan that would involve Aaman and Mansi's help, he knew if he approached her she would think that he has some ulterior motive and maybe he did; the girl was not bad to look at she had a good shape, and ok face, and yes he was attracted to her, and he dreamt of having her as his wife in his bed these past two nights.

Yash was certain that she will be his wife in time but first she need to feel that it is the right decision for her; he wants her to feel accepted for who and what she is and not that this was a hasty or forced decision on their part, he knew that their marriage would be a lifetime commitment and not a faade that his dadaji/dadiji and parents present to the world. Yash was smiling to himself when his father, dadaji and Veer Singh came into his office to discuss some important business matters.

"Yash something interesting happen the new office girl made he intentions known to you smirked his father his son may be only twenty one but he had his fair share of office romance if what the rumour mill said was true.

"No bauji it is nothing like that

His dadaji knew Yash was thinking of a girl but she does not work here, and she is not one of those so call modern girls.

Back at the Singh Mansion Savatri returned all set to teach Aarti she asked Kamala to call her but Kamala said that Aarti was cleaning bade madamji's room. Savatri made her way to her in laws room and she heard their conversation

" Young lady put the ironed clothes in the cupboard her let me show you these go here and those there said dadi " And take those in the basket to be launder give it to Sita she will show you how to use the washing machine and those in the bag are to be hand washed. Go now!

"Ji madam "

Aarti came out and went in search of Sita in the opposite direction of Savatri not seeing her standing there.

"Ji what did I say she looks like maji doesn't she, and her life story is the same, the orphanage Kamala and her husband placed the baby in is the same one she grew up in, and her birthday and name the same. Said a nervous dadi she was anxious for her husband's reaction

"Her voice is similar to my ma. Rookmin I think we made a big mistake back then, tell me how did that help us Veer never left Savatri she did not die or go crazy as we hoped we never got the bahu or grandson we wanted. Even now if Savatri find out the truth and leaves this house Veer will leave with her, Rookmin we tried so many thing throughout the years and all failed, he has never even slept with another woman in a drunkard state and we tried so many times to trap him with the women of our choice. We are stuck with our daughter's children their father was a middle class nobody. Now the baby we thought we had murdered is back in her home but as the maid. How long do you think we can hide our wrong doings tell me?

Savatri was shocked to learn that her beloved in laws whom she respected so much, hated her so much that they are the ones behind the kidnapping of her innocent baby, not only kidnapping but had ordered her death, she leaned on the wall for assistance she wanted to vomit her head begun to hurt, then she slowly made her way to her room and lie down on her bed crying her heart out, she called Veer and asked if he can come home now it was important.

Aarti did what bade madamji asked and went to find Mrs Singh another maid said she had return and she should go check in her room, After knocking on the door she heard a week voice asking her to come in. Mrs Singh was lying on her bed Aarti approached slowly "Madamji are you okay?'

"No beta I have a head ache}

"Do you want me to give you a head massage

"Do you know how beta

"Ji I learnt in the orphanage. Where is the oil?

This is how Mr Singh met them in the room he thought how good mother and daughter looked together and silently thanked god for returning his child.

"Hello are you okay jaan tell me what happened you head hurting did you take your pills today?

Aarti said her excuses and left them to their privacy she smiled to herself at the love and understanding her employers had for each other and wondered if she would ever be so lucky to have that kind of love. While she was in her thoughts a face came to her mind it was of a young handsome man Yash Scindhia he spoke to her with kindness despite their obvious difference in social status, he treated he as an equal not as an inferior servant like the others'smiling Aarti left to continue her work.

In Veer and Savatri's room "Ji bauji and maji they they she cried unable to go on Veer held her close comforting her "relax jaanu tell me when you are ready he said in a soothing voice

They hate me they never wanted me as your wife they wanted me dead she sais sobbing in between

"What are you talking about they love you

"No it was all a lie they wanted you to marry a rich girl from your own class I heard them

"Calm down jaanu tell me clearly what is wrong how do you know this??

" I heard them talking in their room I did not mean to listen but they spoke of my baby and the kidnapping so I listen

"what did they say tell me clearly asked Veer he was nervous to have confirmed what he had suspected all along, and he was afraid of his wife reaction.

Savatri told everything she heard Veer just held her and he also started to cry she did not expect this reaction denial that his parents will ever do such an evil act, anger at her for eavesdropping at his parents private conversation, and accusing them of this vile actions, but tears no her husband is a strong man he can handle anything that what made him a great husband, and a good businessman.

"Sorry my love I know you did not expect this but I feel like a huge weight was removed from my shoulders I know you are confused. He said caressing his wife's face he loved her so much

"What do you mean jaan?

"I am saddened to say this but a few years ago I started suspecting them but I refused to believe that my own parents could be so evil. I realized that they always preferred sons over daughters. When my sister and I were younger I noticed the difference in the way they treated us. I also notice the way they treat Aaman and Mansi. I have heard the comments made by their relatives and their answer. They love sons girls are a burden to them they believe that they only bring shame to the family then my sister Vaneesha eloped with a middle class boy that just further confirmed their believe. I always suspected that they were not happy with our marriage but like a fool I had hopes of them changing, ma kept a grand baby shower for you. When Aarti was born I thought they had changed I mean we had a grand naming ceremony for her; they sympathized with us when we got the news that there will be no more babies. Savatri they are the ones who insisted that we go on our honeymoon and they volunteered to keep the baby. I should have known something was amiss they were being to kind and loving.

"Jaanu we were young all children expect love from their parents not hate we believed that they loved our baby how were we to know that it was a lie just drama on their part

"Jaanu I love you so much and it hurts like hell to know that because of their old school way of thinking they never saw what a gem you are they have masked their hate in all these years but not any more they have to be punished for their crimes he said standing

"No Ji leave them we will never separate and will continue living here happy with our children showing them how strong our bond is and if this girls this maid is indeed our daughter we will love her and give her everything she needs, a family, a happy life, she will be with us forever no one will ever separate us from our child again and if they refuse to be a part of our happy life then so be it let them be outsiders looking in it will be their lost not ours we have already lost so much of her life her growing years I don't intend to lose any more time with her. Said a tearful Savatri.

Veer looked at his wife in amazement in the past bad news would send her into depression but this time she has a purpose to fight a daughter to look forward too god please hear my pray let this girl be our daughter.

Savatri spent the evening teaching Aarti the basic of cooking; Savatri was proud the girl learned quickly and asked all the right questions

Yash came with Aaman and Mansi he spent a lot of his time here; Veer and Savatri treated him as if he was their own child and he loved them as if they were his parents. The key to Yash's plan being a success was to get Aarti in an easy friendship with Mansi who would try to get Aarti to express her willingness to better her situation by furthering her formal education and her skill as a painter. Only then they could offer her suggestions because he sensed that Aarti will not accept out right help from him.

Yash stayed for dinner Aarti assisted Kamla with the serving of the meal and after the coffee Yash kept on stealthy watching her and their hands touched while she was serving him they both felt the new strange sensation; he noticed how the dadaji/dadi kept looking at her and they insisted that she serve them After dinner when she served the coffee in the lounge they insisted that she remain in the room standing quietly waiting until they finished then she had to accompany them to their room to help them, Mansi also left under the pretext to assist her grand parents because she wanted what was going on with this sudden interest in the maid Aarti.

The following day early morning they received the DNA results the courier had three envelopes One for Mr.Singh, one for MRs. Singh. And one for Aaman. The results as follows
