Second Chance
Part 1
"You don't have to stay at any hotel, my brother and his wife have made all the arrangement."
"But..." the reluctant young man answered.
"No...but...but...you are staying with us, bas..."
"There are plenty of rooms in that house...don't worry it won't be any trouble to anyone," a pretty young woman said.
The elder woman just shook her head in reply, "if I had been a son to my father, we would be have been living there instead." She sighed and lamented, "till the end your father couldn't provide me with the lifestyle I was used to."
"Mama...," the young woman tried to shush her up since the young man was not privy to all their family history.
The young man was unperturbed and nonchalantly asked, "what business are they in?"
"They are in clothes retail and real estate, since their eldest daughter got married their business has grown even bigger."
He put two and two together, "You mean merger through marriage, do people still do that." In reply she had a tell-tale smirk, he somewhat got his answer.
Upon an after-thought, he reasoned, "people get married for the stupidest reasons so why not this."
They reached their destination after a long drive and were greeted warmly by the house occupants.
The elder woman proudly introduced the young man to the family, "this is Neelam's fiance Yash."
"Yash beta... my brother and his wife...Satendra and Shoba, their eldest son Pankaj, youngest daughter Paridhi," she said, paused and looked around searching for someone but her eyes caught sight of a young boy.
"Is this her son, he is so cute, what is his name?" she asked.
"Aayu," Shobha answered.
"He looks a lot like his mother."
"Hain... aur ziddi bhi apni mama ki tarah," Shobha added while pulling the small boy's cheek.
"Where is she?" Neelam's mother asked.
"Office but she will be back soon."
All of them went inside, if Yash was awestruck by the majestic structure from the outward, stepping inside had him totally speechless. Everything was grand about the place, the carvings on the ceilings were exquisite, the furniture had an antique and grandeur feel to it, it was unlike anything he had seen before.
"Impressive hah," Neelam remarked as she tugged herself on his arm. He merely nodded while his eyes were locked on a gigantic portrait.
"That's my great grandfather, he built this place."
They were shown their rooms and Yash was certainly pleased. He had read about these kinds of places in story books, haunted havelis and half-ruined castles, never thought he will step foot in one. Soon enough fatigue took over and he dozed off. He had the weirdest dream, he dreamt he was walking through a dark tunnel and it was such a long walk that his feet began to hurt. He got up abruptly from the dream and a glance to the clock made him aware of the fact that he had been sleeping for hours, he then quickly took his shower and joined the rest downstairs.
As he walked downstairs, laughter filled the air and Yash became self-conscious because he was the stranger among the familiar faces. Everyone turned to look at him as he approached them. Neelam's mother walked towards him and pulled his hand,
"Yash...there is another person I would like you to meet." She brought him to face the intended person.
"This is Aarti...my brother's middle daughter."
With the introduction, their smiles faded and their faces became a little bit paler yet hardly anyone else noticed the changes, if anything they were quick to regain composure. Aarti left with an excuse to change, as she walked up the staircase her heart was racing.
She was sitting in front of the dressing table when her mother walked in. She said,
"Aarti...be nice to your cousin and aunt." Aarti rolled her eyes and answered, "I can't promise you...I will try my best." Shobha walked off shaking her head.
A few minutes later Paridhi walked in.
"If you are coming here to gossip, close the door...you know even doors have ears." Aarti barely glanced up at her.
"So what do you think of Neelam's fiance?" Paridhi came straight to the point.
"Does it really matters, what I think?" Aarti replied. "Come on spit it out, what have you heard about him".
"Neelam has done very well I must say, I heard his business is doing very well and he looks better than I imagined," Paridhi continued with a slight regret in her voice.
Aarti amused with her remark, laughed a little and said, "Are you jealous? Would you have preferred if you were the one getting married?"
Paridhi took a deep breath and sighed, "that would be more fun rather than living a dry life here."
"Be careful of what you wish for," Aarti said. She looked at herself in the mirror, satisfied with what she saw, she took Paridhi's arm in hers and said, "let's go down before mom and dad give us the disapproving look for being late at the dinner table." There was no way she could escape from him now, breathe...breathe.
At the other end of the house, Yash and Neelam were having a discussion on their engagement preparation when the distracted Yash casually asked,
"Your mother's family name is Dubey." Neelam didn't understand the purpose of the question, even though puzzled she nodded in agreement.
"Aarti Dubey," only one name kept playing in his mind and without thinking he asked,
"Where is her husband?"
"Whose husband?" Neelam asked confused.
"Hmmm..."he hesitated and after a short pause continued, "Aarti...your cousin, she has a kid right so there must be a husband. Where is he?"
"Oh! You were talking about her...he died a year ago...in a car accident."
What an irony? A few years I had only one question that I wanted to ask her. Why now?
The dining table was filled with food fit for a king, Neelam's mother was greatly satisfied with the preparation especially since it is was the first time her future son-in-law was present, certainly everything was up to expectation. After dinner they indulged in a lively conversation.
Both Yash and Aarti avoided each other like a plague, they were fortunate as they were seated far apart and consciously only made eye contact with the next person to them, indeed it was an awkward moment for them. Only once Aarti made a mistake of looking in front of her and accidently they stared into each other's eyes for a few seconds. They dropped their gloomy faces.
After dinner the elder left to retire to their rooms leaving the younger ones who happily engaged themselves with childish banter teasing one another.
Pankaj teased his sisters and his cousin endlessly calling Paridhi a cry baby and in a jest he said, "Aarti...was the most daring one, she ran away from home when Dad scolded her one day for bringing a stray cat. Dad found her at the bus-stop..she wanted to take a bus to our grandma's and dragged her back screaming." He let out a loud laugh before adding, "do you remember Aarti." She sat there silently with a blank expression on her face.
When Pankaj continued to include her in his comedy show, Aarti got highly annoyed, she got up to leave, "I'm not going partake in anything where I'm the butt of the joke. I'm going to tuck my son to bed. Please excuse me and good night everyone." She didn't care if tongues were wagging after she left, all she knew was the longer she stayed with him there, the more the tension will increase.
There was a war within her, peace prevailed only when she entered her son's room. He was soundly asleep, she gently stroked his hair and kissed his forehead. She sat there a few minutes more, trying hard to push everything from her mind yet the flood of memories gushed in.
