"Palak, please stop moving about."
He could hear Aarti's voice coming from the children's room. He smiled at the scene that greeted him. This was a typical morning for him since one month ago.
Aarti was on the bed and Palak was standing in front of her. Aarti was trying to plait Palak's hair but she was fidgety as she wanted to snatch the teddy bear from Ansh. Ansh was running in circles in the room holding the teddy bear challenging Payal to catch him and Payal was running after him.
Payal saw Yash at the door and ran to hug him.
"Daddy, help me please. Ansh bhaiyya took my teddy bear and refused to give me back."
"Ask her to catch me first," Ansh shouted from across the room.
Yash knew that his sweet and dainty Payal was no match for Ansh. Ansh was a bundle of energy.
"Ok, I am going to catch you instead!" Yash walked across the room towards Ansh.
"AAARRRGGGHHH!!!" Ansh screamed and jumped onto the bed and went behind Aarti. As Yash approached him, he hugged Aarti's neck from behind and continued screaming. Palak was jumping around trying to grab the teddy bear from Ansh's hand.
"Mummy, help me please! Tell Daddy it is not fair he help Payal! Mummy help me!!! Palak stop!!! Mummy help!!!"
"Ansh, give Payal her teddy bear back now."
Aarti's tone was definitely too harsh in Yash's opinion. Yash saw that Ansh released his hand from Aarti's neck immediately and looked at her, his eyes questioning.
"Ansh, give Payal the teddy bear and go and bathe now," Aarti repeated herself while she continued plaiting Palak's hair. She did not spare a glance at Ansh even though Ansh was staring helplessly at her. Tears glistened in his eyes and he appeared so vulnerable that Yash wanted to hug him.
But he hesitated. Somehow the boundaries were still clearly drawn. Ansh was still her child and Palak and Payal his. Would he be crossing the lines now if he went over to comfort Ansh?
Payal ran towards Ansh and held out her hand. Ansh reluctantly gave her the teddy bear, got off the bed and headed towards the bathroom.
"Thank you, Mummy! I love you."
Payal hugged Aarti and kissed her cheeks. Aarti smiled but Yash saw confusion in her eyes.
"I love you more Mummy!" Palak screamed as she hugged Aarti, taking her attention away from Payal. Both his children were vying for Aarti's attention when he walked out of their room.
For the whole day, Yash's mind kept going back to the incident that happened that morning. He even called Vidhi babhi up from the office to find out about Aarti's attitude towards the children. Vidhi babhi assured him that she had never seen Aarti spoke harshly to the children. Vidhi babhi also told him that Aarti would spend all her time with the children after she was done with the household chores and everyone could see Palak and Payal adored her. Vidhi babhi's only complaint was that Aarti never wanted to gossip or watch the daily soap operas with her. Yash knew his mother liked Aarti too. He had never heard his mother complained about Aarti. She was always vocal about how Aprita did not meet the qualities of a Scindia's bahu.
Perhaps Aarti knew best how to handle Ansh which was why she had used that tone on him. After all, he had only met Ansh one month ago and they had spent limited amount of time bonding. He normally hanged out with the children for a while in the morning before going to work and sometimes after dinner if time permitted. Even on weekends, he had been busy with the recently awarded construction development project that he could not spare much time around them. Normally when he was with the children, Aarti would be busy with something else. But tried as he might to reason with himself, he could not brush away the nagging feeling that he did not know Aarti well enough and that he had entrusted his precious daughters with her. He needed to have a talk with Aarti on this no matter how uncomfortable it was for him.
" Aartiji, is something bothering you?" Yash asked her the moment she stepped into the bedroom after tucking in the children.
Aarti stopped in her tracks and stared blankly at him.
"Aartiji, I know that we agreed that we will only be parents to our children. I do not mean to pry but I could see that you are very distracted nowadays. And earlier this morning, when you spoke to Ansh to give Payal the teddy bear, I could sense something was troubling you or you would not have spoken so harshly to him."
Aarti continued staring at him and clutched her mangalsutra with her left hand.
" Aartiji, initially I thought we could go about our own way and just be parents to the children. But now I realised it is not possible. It is a joint-effort to be parents. We need to support each other. I did not want to make it look as though you were in the wrong if I spoke up just now in front of the children but Ansh was just playing around. He looked so sad after you told him to return the teddy bear to Payal that I wanted to hug him. I think we need to discuss how we should behave around the children? I really hope you are not taking this the wrong way'I do not want us to have differences in opinion on how to discipline them. This may confuse the children."
Yash felt he had spoken more to Aartij at that moment that he had did in the past one month. But Palak and Payal meant the world to him and he could not afford to make any mistakes with them.
"Why?"
"Why? What you mean why?"
"Why didn't you hug him?"
Yash could not read her expression and was confused why she asked this.
"Because he is your son..."
The moment the words slipped out of his mouth, he saw disappointment in Aarti's eyes.
"No, I do not mean it that way...I..."
Aarti walked past him and got on the bed.
Yash wondered if the boundaries were only visible to him. And what games was Aartiji playing?
