The return of the patriarch in today's episode did not do much to change the loveless and satirical dynamics of this strange family; in fact it just heightened them. Today we find that there is not much of a difference in Kamala's and Sarita's situation, or Sohanlal and Raj's situation:

Kamala and Sarita:

Both are stuck/choose to stay in a loveless marriage

Both have become hardened, jaded, and sharp-tongued as a result of this experience.

Both have to face their soutens (the other woman). Sohanlal flaunts his new wife around the house
without any qualms; while Raj keeps on holding a torch for his old flame in his heart. Soon, this is set to change with Divya's entry.

Sohanlal and Raj

In different ways are obsessed with women other than their current/legal wives. In Raj's case, it is a case of heartbreak due to love, with Sohanlal, it is a new indulgence. Soon the coming track will show Raj's love also living under the same roof, just like his father's, albeit under different circumstances.

Symbolism of the Fan

The fan appears to have an abiding presence in Raj's life, and particularly in Raj and Sarita's dynamics. In one of their first interactions, Raj switches off a fan in response to a rain-drenched and shivering Sarita. Raj is likewise switched off to any possibility of things circulating between him and Sarita, as the later scenes showed.

Next, when Sarita goes to tell him that she is leaving him, and they end up falling on each other, we see the shadow of the ceiling fan's blade repeatedly moving over Sarita's face. The repeated movements reminded me of marking time, each blade representing a year of wasted hopes and expectations in Sarita's life. In today's episode, as in the spoiler photos, Raj is shown to be taking apart a table fan. Perhaps this is a symbol of dwelling repeatedly on his fan-atic obsession with Divya.

👏. Lovely post and very interesting choice of words. Need to rush to office - otherwise would have said more.

aimf,

Really like your analogy of the fan. Did not think much about it until you mentioned it. You had earlier talked about washing of linen in public. In fact, the writers were very good in choosing this "scrap dealer" profession for Raj as it shows his transformation from belonging in a world of art (beauty) to a world of discarded things (junk or garbage). Divya will bring him back to that world and more than likely along with Sarita.

The word "fan" in chinese has the same sound as "good" or "kindness".
In an islamic interpretation in one's dream the fan symbolises the wife, one person you feel good about, it can also be sign of prosperity.

All in all, constant presence of the fan Is the constant shadow of divyas presence in raj's life. She's the wife his soul longs for, she's the kindness he lacks.

Angie, Ruchi, Myra, Shweta and Sushant Fan
Thank you for appreciating and liking the post. @Angie --Yes, you are correct. The CVs are contrasting how Raj forced himself to suppress the inner call and be indentured to a profession and marriage, both of which are joyless.
@Myra Interesting to know that fan means wife. Thanks for sharing this information.

aimf you forced me to glance at this weeks episodes!
Nice interpretation of symbolism and psychodynamics.
Yes, Kamala's and Sarita's situation, or Sohanlal and Raj's situation is very much similar on many levels ---- but there are some disparities too.
In addition to what you have written re:
1. Sohanlal and Raj's situation
There is the holding on to past, spent-out, unwanted emotions and living in a bygone faded era symbolized by trading and living in the midst of junk (raddi bhandaar).
Both father and son want to live a feudal life style where they can mistreat the women they have married by their words and actions. The father is overt and explicit, the son is covert and obtuse. The father is honest about his intentions, the son lives a lie and lacks the courage to be honest to himself, Sarita or anyone else. His father is right - Raj is unable to be an 'Honest MAN" (mardangi).
The son is hiding behind the junk - because he cannot confront himself!
The father deals in junk - because he would rather live in the older male-dominated lifestyle.
2. Sarita and Kamla's situation: Both are stuck/choose to stay in a loveless marriage. Both have become hardened, jaded, and sharp-tongued as a result of this experience
I would say Sarita is different - she is choosing to be sharp tongued as a defense mechanism when people goad her. She is sharp tongued with Divya - because she wants her to wake up to reality. Divya is a clueless, selfish (when it comes to Raj), and shallow woman. Sarita is sharp tongued with some members of Raj's family becuase they push her beyond endurance!
Sarita is a fighter. Even after 10 years, she is fighting for her rights. I like her peseverance, her willingness to face reality and correct errors in her thought process. Sarita has nothing to hide so she is upfront and open.

What a joy to find you here. I was missing you today and wishing that you were there to discuss this episode, and here you are. I almost PMed you to come and play in PV Land 2, but I did not know if you were in town. I like your insights about what you have to say. I knew you would like Sarita's perseverance. Om shantih

Agreed that both Sarita and Kamla are in loveless marriage. But as of now, it looks like Kamla is stuck in that marriage due to lack of options. More than likely, Kamla's husband has always been abusive - that seems to be most defining aspect of his character 😡. His bringing in a second wife / mistress is just another dimension to their abusive / unhealthy relationship. Kamla is afraid of him, angry on him, full of hatred and disgusted by him. Sarita is pretty, comes from rich background and is well educated (as she admitted to Divya). So, it cannot be lack of options or lack of support. For some weird reason she wants to stay with Raj, maybe even loves him. She is afraid of his anger but there's no real anger or hatred - she does not even blame his for her condition.
Coming to Raj and Sohanlal, Raj is weak (unable to move on in life, punishing self and everyone around due to one failed relationship) but he does not enjoy others pain.
'fan-atic obsession seems more appropriate for Raj's feelings than any positive word like 'love'

Thank you for thinking of me. My DSL line was having problems and I was off the internet for a few days! With the little that I have seen of PV2 I am at a crossroads regarding the serial - I have written a piece that I would appreciate to have your input on. It is entitled Sarita's Dilemma and is at https://www.indiaforums.com/forum/post/85251013
