Cinco de Mayo is the time to celebrate the victory of the Mexican army over the French forces in the 'Batalla de Puebla' or the battle of puebla on March 5, 1862. It is a regional holiday in the Mexico's state of Puebla and is celebrated in other parts of the world especially in the United States as a day of celebration of Mexican pride and heritage.

Cinco De Mayo symbolizes the unity and patriotic feeling of the Mexicans. Over the years, the significance of the day has been reduced and it is seen as a day of dancing, singing and high spirited merry making. In United States people of Mexican descent and others alike celebrate this day with more fervor and enthuse than people in Mexico itself. The day is marked by parades, mariachi music, folklorico dance and other festivities. The day holds as importance for some as the other festivals of United States. . In true sense the day has been commercialized and used to promote and sell Mexican food, beverages and other products, but fortunately the essence of the celebration has remained.

People come together on this day to spread joy and happiness and despite of differences in origin, culture and tradition join the party for celebrations symbolizing the unity that was the strength of Mexico reflecting on the battlefield.
