Chapter 3:
26th July,East Street,Allahabad
Saxena House,2:30 pm
Sweat was dripping down on his forehead and back. His plain work shirt was completely drenched. The wild grass was proving to be the most difficult to remove. Weeds were comparatively easy to uproot. As he reached another stubborn patch of grass, he looked up at the sun which was dancing overhead and decided that it was time for a much deserved break. Nudging the other dark-haired boy wrestling with yet another grassy patch, Krishna signalled to him with a pack of cigarettes in his hand. The boy shook his head in understanding and removing his ipod earplugs followed Krishna to the shade of a nearby tree.
Both boys were oddly contemplative as they sat under the tree in the sweltering heat. Krishna studied the pale boy sitting beside him and wondered how he (Krishna not the boy) had got so lucky as to have such a wonderful foster family. When Shyam Saxena brought Krishna home that evening, he could hear the raised voices of his wife and son questioning his decision. Krishna didn't blame them. If Shyam continued to bring his work home with him, the Saxena mansion would be full of juveniles and delinquents. As Shyam explained his family about the predicament of the young boy waiting outside their house, Naina's motherly heart beat tenderly for Krishna as she heard the trying situations he'd been forced to undergo. One look at his innocent face and world-weary eyes that had seen and experienced much more than they should, and Naina was completely overtaken by a deep maternal urge for protecting this boy. She looked in his eyes and saw the wisdom which her husband had spoken about reflecting deep in the twin pools of brown amber and she decided right then that she would love this boy as much as she loved her own son. Her son on the other hand stormed right out of the house, a very uncharacteristic reaction on his part as he was known as the rational, quiet one in the Saxena family.
Krishna was taken aback by Naina's constant mothering. Right from deciding what sheets would be most comfortable for him to asking him his favourite type of food, she took care of his every need even before he himself thought of it.
At dinner that night, Krishna sat along with the entire Saxena family to eat a sumptuous meal completely made from scratch by Naina. In this humongous house with their numerous servants, Naina cooked and cleaned everything by hand. Krishna was enjoying the meal and the company and was quietly listening to the playful husband-wife banter. Shyam Saxena was a complete family man and his love for his family was apparent from the attention he paid to every small detail relating to anyone of them. The boy who had earlier stormed out on seeing Krishna, Adarsh, was the only one quiet apart from Krishna who was silently eating his meal, ignoring his parents and the stranger at the table. After finishing dinner, Krishna helped Naina and Shyam clean up and retired to the bedroom which Naina had so painstakingly cleaned out for him.
Alone in the minty-fresh smelling room, Krishna closed his eyes and sent a silent prayer of thanks to whichever God was responsible for this twist of fate in his life. A good education and a bright future awaited him and for the first time in his life, he was on the winning side. He took off his shirt and his belt and searched the closet for a clean pair of pyjamas. Pulling a white wife beater over his head he drew back the curtains and opened the windows. The sudden gust of wind brought the intoxicating perfume of Naina's flourishing jasmines and the sweet smell elicited a smile from Krishna. A sudden movement caught his eye and he leaned outside the window to get a closer look at the dark shadow scaling the wall of the house across the street. Just as he was about to raise an alarm, the shadow reached the roof of the house and sat on the roof ledge dangling her feet. Her? Krishna double-checked and found that the shadow was indeed the same pretty girl he was ogling earlier. It was clearly her house and it seemed that climbing from the window to the roof was a daily part of the girl's nightly routine as she sat enjoying the cool weather and the breeze.
Pratigya was sitting with her back against the chimney and her feet dangling in the air. The cool breeze was playing with her long dark hair and the stubborn strands were clinging to her face, refusing to let go. She closed her eyes and imagined herself to be a part of the inky, starry sky above her. She was one with the sky…infinite and without boundaries…no Angad would ever dare of asking her to marry them again…no Dad would ever barter her like groceries for just sealing an important deal…no Mother would ever force her to spend the rest of her life with a man as disgusting as her father himself…no…no…no….
Pratigya's turbulent emotions became unbearable and before she knew it, the dam burst and tears broke through. Angry at the feeling of helplessness and sad that her parents thought so little of her, she sobbed and cried over the injustice that was her life. Less than 20 feet away, 2 curious brown eyes watched her battle with her emotions and wonder what had made such a beautiful girl cry.

The Missing Word:Chapter 4
26th July,East Street,Allahabad
Saxena House,1:45 am
After several failed attempts at sleeping, Krishna decided to go outside in the garden to smoke. The memory of the girl's tear streaked face was still fresh in his mind. As the cool night breeze hit his face, his chaotic thoughts calmed down. He started when he saw someone seated on the low lying branch of the sycamore tree. On closer inspection the person turned out to be Adarsh. Krishna shuffled closer uneasily, the memory of Adarsh storming out on the announcement of him staying, still fresh in his mind.
This was his favorite place in the entire house. Adarsh preferred the peace and quiet that the garden offered him at night. He was always taunted and shunned by the other East Street kids. Being the son of the do-gooder, honest lawyer always came in the way of making friends in this society, where the words honest lawyer were an oxymoron of sorts. Since his childhood, he was always sidelined by the other rich brats and this made Adarsh retreat into a shell. But inside that shell was a terrific, humorous personality. He was a big fan of comic books, Kung-Fu movies, hard-rock bands and open-sea sailing. As he was an only child and had less or no friends at all, his interaction with kids his own age was limited to only Angad and his gang of bullies teasing him in college. He wasn't invited to any of their parties or social events and hardly ever got the chance to meet Komal Yadav-the love of his life.
When Adarsh was in pre-school, Angad had teased him mercilessly about his Little Pony lunchbox (a minor misunderstanding by Naina who thought that Adarsh was in his 'pink is pretty' phase). Angad had poured thick white glue over Adarsh's head and was busy laughing at him with the rest of the kids from the class. Komal (who was spunky and as bold as any 6 year old with an advanced degree in karate could be) happened to chance upon this unfortunate boy who just couldn't seem to hold back big fat tears. She punched Angad hard on the nose and helped Adarsh clean up the messy glue from his hair and face. She then approached a now broken-nosed Angad and made him swear not to trouble Adarsh again. This incident was the beginning of the most wonderful years of Adarsh's life. Their newly cemented friendship stood strong against most of pre and high school.
College on the other hand, was an entirely different story. Komal matured into a pretty, pink-faced teenager who was popular in college and had many friends. Adarsh on the other hand developed another tough coating to his shell. Komal found the reticent Adarsh dull and uninteresting and proceeded to forget all their childhood memories. Adarsh clung to the tom-boyish, naughty and fun image of Komal in his mind for the longest time, till he realized the gap of years passed between the fact today and the fiction cooked by his mind. Thus years of giggling over scabbed knees and stolen mangoes were replaced by taunting silences and pretences that the other person had ceased to exist. All would have been well, only if Adarsh ignored the slight fact that he was in love with his childhood best friend. The friend who no longer even acknowledged him in college corridors. Who looked away even if their eyes met for an instant. The girl who once had a not-caring-what-the-world-thinks attitude, now refused to even come to the Saxena house where she had spent most of her childhood trying to get into Shyam's office to sit and spin on his big revolving chair.
Adarsh had accepted his one-sided love affair quite a while ago. He knew that Komal would never go out with him and had resigned himself to pining for her from a distance. He had even gone to the extent of naming his sail-boat after her…not that she knew…or even cared… On top of these complications in his life, his parents had housed some delinquent from the street. No matter how good his father could judge characters, Krishna seemed like a bad decision on his father's part. His mother had taken one look at his baby brown eyes and was completely bowled over. It seemed everyone in the Saxena house was trying to go out of their way to help Krishna. Adarsh was not used to being side-lined in his own house. But with the arrival of Krishna, he felt that he would soon be playing a second fiddle.
Adarsh liked sitting in the garden at night. His spot on the tree was directly opposite the Yadav's garage, where he had a clear view of the goings and comings in and out of the Yadav house. He would be able to see Komal as she returned from her latest nocturnal wanderings, usually with her arm around some vaguely dumb boy. The boy would try to kiss her on the last step of her house and she would duck her head at the last moment causing the boy to land his kiss miles away from where he had planned. A snooping Adarsh would feel momentary satisfaction at Komal's indifference which would immediately turn to self-loathing for not being the boy who at least got to spend the evening with Komal.
This night was no different than the rest as Adarsh sat on the branch squirming to get a glimpse of Komal. Heavy footsteps behind him caused him to start and jerk back hastily. Looking as guilty as the boy who was caught with his hand inside the cookie jar, he looked back to see Krishna smirking knowingly back at him.
"Stop smiling…."
Krishna jammed his hands in his pockets and braced himself against the cool breeze.
"Sorry….but the spying on that short chick is entirely too lame."
"What?! I wasn't…its just….that…oh forget it…wait a minute..SHORT?!.."
Krishna took advantage of Adarsh's disbelief to take a seat next to him on the branch.
"You just called her short..."
"Oh sorry…spying on the vertically challenged chick is entirely too lame!"
"Ha ha..you crack me up"
Sensing Adarsh's lack of interest in the conversation, Krishna stood up to leave.
"Wait.."
Krishna looked at Adarsh in disbelief. The boy who had disliked him to the point of storming out of the room whenever Krishna entered it, actually wanted him to stay.
"I'm sorry if I came off a bit strongly. I am not used to not being the centre of attention in this house.."
"A bit?..."
"Don't push it ok..I'm trying to apologize here.."
Krishna sat back on the branch and stared at a distance.
"Don't worry about it..I am used to being unwanted. My own mother..", realizing that he had said way more than he ought to, Krishna stood up to leave again.
"Your mother's food made me sleepy.. 'm going to bed.. good night and good luck with the short chick.."
Adarsh smiled back at him. "Good night"
Feeling like he had made a good breakthrough with Adarsh, Krishna happily made his way over to his bedroom lost in thoughts of the pretty girl on the roof.
