i think by 'mandir ke stambh' they meant pillars which is the strength that keeps the temple/any building from collapsing & here the pillars r the pandavas, protectors & by 'mandir ke murati' they meant kunti whom the pandavas (even karna) treat like a goddess.(im not native hindi speaker, so may b im wrong. this is wat i thought they meant by the analogy.)

but why did he say that if the pillars are broken, it is not a matter to be upset about.
but if the idol is damaged then it is adharma?
wont damaging the pillars of the temple on which the temple stands, destruct the idol too?

the mandir stambh are the pandavas. and the garb grih ki murti is kunti. karn tells that it doesn't matter much to him if pandava's die(stambh) but he will be deeply affected by the death of kunti(garb grih ki murti kandhith hona). we all have seen his affection for kunti when she had entered hastinapur and also after competition. he had said that in his childhood he used to believe that maharani (kunti) is like his mother. that belief I still there in him even though he refused I infront of kunti.

so the conclusion is he doesn't care about the pandavas but kunti being part of duryodhana's plan has disturbed him

^ Right!

We've also noticed his expressions while they all were leaving for Varnavrat.

Women were protected and sheltered in that age . The wives and mothers of vanquished heroes were treated with kindness.
I assume he felt that deaths of Pandavas over the question of succession was not unfair even if the means used was not as he repeatedly pointed out ...they were warriors fighting a war and losing it.
But dragging dowager queen Kunti into it and killing her for her son's war was unfair and adharma. She signified the prestige and grace in the kingdom along with Gandhari...burning her to gain the throne was unseemly.
