Chapter 9
Asad couldn't tell what month it was or what day but by the sunrises and sundowns he knew another week had passed without any strangers popping up or anymore planes or boats or helicopters...his hope was dwindling fast. They were still able to keep some level of sustenance from what he found around the island and they'd found away to keep their teeth clean and bathe in a nearby stream. They got by ... barely and he continuously wondered how long it would be until they just collapsed from lack of proper nutrition.
He looked over at Zoya who was falling asleep under a coconut tree and he thought back to their frank and honest discussion of what had happened between them and he closed his eyes against the memory. They'd gotten really tanned while on the island he could tell from his hands and chest, he didn't know what his face looked like. He could see the burnished colour of Zoya's skin from the sun's heat and he thought under the conditions she'd fared much better than one would've expected.
He knew thought that she really wanted to go home. A few times he'd heard her mumbling about her family in her sleep and he'd felt his heart clench. He knew his own mother and sister must be worried sick or possibly mourning his death.
Zoya stirred under the tree and blinked open big brown eyes. As she spotted him at the water's edge, she stood up and walked towards him. "I'm tired." She muttered as she reached him. "I know." he replied, "I saw you nodding off under the tree." He pointed towards the spot she'd just been occupying. She shook her head, "No sleepy. I'm tired of being here. I want to go home." He could see unshed tears filling her eyes and his heart broke.
"We're going to get out of here Zoya." He said more for her benefit and secretly wishing that it would happen. "I hope you're right and that each other's faces aren't the last faces we ever see." And then she turned and walked away up the beach and back under her tree.
In his mind Asad thought, Me too.
-----------
A couple of days passed and Asad and Zoya tried their best to get through. It wasn't easy. The nights had gotten colder and the wind was strong and brutal. A tree had almost been felled by the force of the winds and with barely the clothes on their back they were liable, with such low resistances, to get pneumonia or hypothermia.
One night Zoya surprised Asad by coming close and sharing body warmth to get through the night. After the first time when she'd hurled accusing insults at him for doing the same, her actions had surprised him but preserving their lives meant more. So he'd pulled her close and they'd fallen asleep huddled close in each other's arms. The next morning, Asad had waited for her to wake up, he was edgy fearing they'd be back to square one and he'd be made to look like the lowest but it never happened. She awoke and was normal. She didn't act any different and he found himself filled with relief and the hope that she now trusted him.
Later that day as the sun started to descend, Asad saw the same man a little ways down the beach and he motioned to Zoya and she nodded. Slowly and steadily so to not alert the man to his approach, Asad trailed closer and closer until he was right behind the man and then he pounced throwing them both to the sand, pinning the man down with his weight. Zoya brought vines and they both secured the man and hauled him back up the beach intending on getting some answers.
----------
The man struggled and struggled to get away but he couldn't, Asad made sure of it and he knew he had to get answers soon because the vines wouldn't be strong enough to hold him for a long duration if he kept struggling. "Why did you run away before?" Asad started.
The man's forehead creased but he said nothing. He grunted and looked away from Asad. Asad shot a look and Zoya and she looked anxious and worried.
"Which part of this island are you from and how can we get off?" The man looked back at Asad and growled in a thick island accent, "I don't hafta tell you nothing!"
"You will tell me everything if you want to get free."" Asad said, his anger growing.
"Forget you man. I'm not telling you nothing!" The man said and Asad's fists clenched in anger.
"How do we get off this island?!" Asad shouted and he saw Zoya flinch.
"You don't." The man said simply and Asad saw Zoya slump down into the sand and he knew if he looked at her she'd be crying.
"What do you mean? How did you get here?"
"I've been here for years and no one sees me unless I let them." the man growled. "I got unlucky with you two cuz I didn't know anyone was on here."
Asad sighed heavily, then he remembered he'd seen other people too. "What about others? We saw other people on the island."
He saw something flash in the man's eyes before he masked it and turned away saying, "I've said all I'm gonna say."
Asad secured the man under a tree with more vines that he was sure would hold. He hoped tomorrow he'd have more luck making the man talk.
"Asad, we're going to be here until we just-" Zoya started choked up and he put a finger to her lips and pulled her away and a little ways down the beach from where he'd left the man.
He held her by her upper arms and said strongly, "Don't say that again. If we don't hope we have nothing. We have to believe everything will be okay." He pulled her into his arms and said, "We will get off this island some way or another."
She wrapped her arms around his back and cried softly into his chest.
The next morning when they woke up, the vines were on the ground and the man was gone. Asad knew he'd secured it tightly so that meant only one thing...someone had come and released the man. Something really suspicious was going on here and he had a feeling figuring out what it was would be their key home.
