Prompt: Asad a depression patient (maybe because he has lost all his family) Zoya will be his psychiatrist...bringing colors in his life...making him understand the importance of life.

Zoya looked up from her paperwork as she heard the knock on her office door. She called out a "come in" and the door opened, revealing her 3 o'clock Wednesday client.

"Hello, Asad. Have a seat." She asked him.

Asad Khan entered his therapist Dr. Zoya Farooqui's room and took his usual seat and nodded at her.

"How are you this week?" she started.

"Alive, if that's makes any difference, Zoya." He shrugged his shoulders.

"Everything matters, Asad. Haven't we discussed that already? And being alive is fundamental to doing anything in life, isn't it? So it is good to be alive. It means you can do everything that you want to." she told him, smiling.

"Okay," she continued, "Let's start, shall we? Why don't you begin today's session by you recapping your week? Tell me what happened since your last appointment?"

Asad sighed and began his monologue, telling her anything and everything about the past week that came to his memory. Zoya sat there with an impassive face and took her notes - just as it was in every appointment ever since he had come to her eight weeks ago. He had been tired and defeated when he started therapy. He was referred to Zoya by a colleague of hers who was a friend of Asad. Having lost his entire family in a car crash and being the sole survivor of that horrific episode, Asad Ahmed Khan had become a living breathing corpse and his friends couldn't see him wasting away anymore.

And here they were, two months later.

Asad took a deep breath as he finished talking about his past week. As he took a sip of water to calm him down, Zoya regarded him carefully. After Asad had had his fill, and was sitting back upright again, Zoya addressed him.

"Asad, your week seems to have gone nicely and the new low doses of the medications seem to be suiting your body well. You did not have any panic episodes and the nightmares seem to be ebbing as well. That is a very good sign.

"Now, I am going to ask you to evaluate yourself." She sat back as she said that, "Tell me, Asad. How do you see yourself today?"

Asad contemplated for a while, "I, um, I don't know. I am alive and have been able to go back to work. I guess, er, I think I could've done more with my life. I think, um, I...I want to do better with my life." he sighed and rubbed his face.

Zoya nodded at him, "Tell me how you saw yourself two months ago."

"Dead." He did not have to think about answering that question. He really did feel dead, or at least felt as if he should be dead. "I felt like I had no reason to live for and should not be living anymore. Why are you asking this again? We have gone through this. You know I don't want to talk about that time!" he was getting a bit agitated now.

"That is precisely why I am asking you this," she said, "You feel yourself changed, Asad. You do not want to think about that dark time today but there was a time when you first came to me and all you could think was about that incident and the misery. You need to accept the change and realize that you are not the same person you were in those initial weeks after the incident. You have grown and come far from that. You need to focus on that growth and rediscover your strengths."

Asad mulled over what she was telling him. He could literally feel some of this agitation leave his body. Zoya smiled inwardly at the palpable change in his body language.

She leaned forward and kept her hands on the desk, "Tell me this one last thing. How do you see yourself in the foreseeable future?"

He thought about it for a moment and then said, "Working, and just being, Zoya," he said, "I want to be living a life, and not just getting through it. I want to be able to accomplish something. I need to have my life back. I need some control over my actions and thoughts."

"Well, I can give you one of that good news." Zoya smiled at him, "You already have control over your thoughts. You desire something; your thoughts are not controlled by the remnants of that accident. Rest will come with time. Pain is a part of life but what is important to understand that you are not a puppet of that pain."

Asad looked at her and really contemplated what she had just said.

Zoya looked at the time, "Well, it seems our hour for today is almost up. For this week's little homework, I want you to make a list and write down everything that you did in a day that made you happy and things you took pleasure in. Do it at the end of the day, every day until our next week's appointment."

Asad nodded at her and got up, "You work some magic, Zoya."

"Therapy is no magic." She chuckled, "It is important to find the trigger for the pain. You, Asad, were blaming yourself for having survived that night. I just made you think otherwise. Our thoughts are very potent and we often do not realize that."

Asad shook his head and smiled at her shyly, "You still are amazing, Doc."

Zoya laughed now, "You know it's a violation of the therapist-client relationship ethic. You can't pull off that coy flirting."

Asad laughed loudly as he exited her office and said over his shoulder, "Can't blame a guy for trying."

So, how was it? It was short but that is how I think it suited best. I could have made it longer, but then there would have been repetitions and would have turned out to be drab!
