PART 17
Jakhotia
Mansion
Raj's bedroom:
Raj left to walk towards the mandap, as soon as his sisters
left a little earlier. He was so engrossed in his thoughts that he realized a
little late that he left his mobile in the bedroom. So he came back to locate
where he left it.
He looked around and found it lying on the side table near
his cot. He bent to pick it up when something near it caught his eye and
brought a bittersweet smile to his lips. It was a photograph of Divya and him,
taken during their first candle light dinner after graduating from college. He
picked it up and traced the outline of her face with his fingertips,
reminiscing about their time together. He fell flat for her electrifying smile;
and her intelligently crafted arguments won his heart. She was beautiful inside
out... And he did not think twice before hurting her; he was ridden with guilt
and shame every time he thought about it.
Life had a strange way of always coming between them. First
it was her familial responsibility that drove them apart and later his marriage
to SaritaJi. But their love was so strong that it did not wither in spite of
being apart from each other for 10 years. And everything went down the drain
due to a moment of foolishness on his part. How he wished he could turn back
time, he wondered.
He placed the photo frame back in its place and turned to leave his room when he heard a hesitant knock
on the door and saw SaritaJi seeking permission to enter the room. He was
surprised to see her there and smiled at her a little tentatively.
She entered the room and got right to the point. "RajJi I
have something to ask you. Is everything alright between you and Divya, RajJi?"
He took sometime to answer her question. "Everything is
perfectly alright, SaritaJi. What made you think otherwise?"
"Because I see a frown on your face and Divya is overly
joyous, which I feel she is faking." She said without hesitating.
"I think you have got it all wrong, SaritaJi. Divya and I
would not be getting married, if things were not fine between us. Please stop
worrying unnecessarily." He assured her
"I hope you are telling me the truth, RajJi. Please remember
that I am your friend and if there is something bothering you, you can always
tell me." She
said
Raj did not want Sarita to endure any more pain because of
him. So he had to take the only route he could think of; to pretend to be angry
at her. Otherwise she would not rest until she resolved his issues with Divya;
which he wanted to do on his own, without any help from SaritaJi.
Vikrant stopped when he heard Raj's raised voice coming from
his bedroom. He clenched and unclenched his fingers listening to it, anger
stamped all over his face.
Raj mustered all the courage and yelled at Sarita saying,
"How many times do I have to say that I am alright? Can't you understand that I
do not want you to interfere in my affairs anymore, SaritaJi?"
Sarita was stunned into silence and did not know what to
say. And before she could utter a word, Raj continued, "I think you have this
strange compulsion to set things right for me all the time. Please stop doing
that, I am not a child. Besides, I am getting married to Divya in a few minutes
and I do not wish a third person coming between us. I don't need you or your
help anymore SaritaJi, please understand it and leave me alone, for god's sake."
Sarita was taken aback and hurt to hear all these words come
from RajJi's mouth. Her mind stopped working and her eyes reflected the shock
and pain his outburst caused her. He looked away from her, unable to meet her
eyes anymore and said, "Need I remind you that you have a husband and a little
boy waiting for you. It's high time you paid attention to them instead of me."
This made Sarita extremely angry, "I don't have to learn
about family and priorities from you of all people, RajJi! Anyway, thank you
for your advice." She said sarcastically.
"Don't worry; I assure you that I will not get in your way
anymore. I am just deeply hurt that you think of me as a third person. Now I
know my place in your life; thank you for letting me know where I stand." She
said; unaware that Vikrant was witnessing the entire conversation.
Raj was ashamed of himself for resorting to this route and
uttered,"SaritaJi..." without knowing what to say.
Sarita raised her palm to stop him from speaking and said,
"I think you should leave now. Divya must be waiting for you."
Raj made a move to leave the room, thinking that he hurt
SaritaJi deeply with his words today; but he knew that this was something he
had to do. He did not want to be the reason for anymore misunderstandings
between Vikrant and her. He prayed that SaritaJi would not see through this act
of his when she introspected things a little later.
Sarita on the other hand needed a few minutes to comprehend
what transpired just now. She was extremely happy for RajJi and Divya; but was
awfully disheartened at the harsh words that RajJi threw at her face. She
wanted to at least be a good friend to them. But why was it that every time she
made a friend, the said person always wanted her away from their life? She
wondered sadly.
Vikrant left before either of them stepped out of the room; the
anger slowly ebbing away to be replaced by pity for his wife. He assumed that Sarita
had not gotten get over her first love; whereas Raj had no qualms throwing her
away for his first love. Love made people do crazy stuff and now he was slowly
beginning to understand what Sarita might be going through.
What Vikrant did not know was that Sarita was madly in love with
him. And that the sympathy and forgiveness that took over his anger, might
become a huge hurdle to cross later on in their life.
To be continued...
