RK TOOK HIS BIWI FOR A PERFECT DATE
Arnav does not why he is at the Oberoi lobby. He trusts his Di. She is like his second mother.
Di would never hurt and betray me. Khushi must have misunderstood the situation. Or does she really dislike Di to spread such lies? Di is the sweetest person in the world. She is not capable of hurting anyone.
Yet an inkling of doubt has entered his mind. He knows his Di's voice well and no matter what he can't deny that it was her on the recording. Arnav remembers his Di's odd behavior the day he left Mumbai.
Di was just preoccupied. Does not mean Di is lying to all of us and is in Mumbai!
Unbidden memory from several years ago sneaks up on Arnav. One of his clients asked him when Anjali got married to Rohan Malhotra. Arnav still remembers quite clearly as it took him by surprise. Naturally at that time he denied that those two are married as his Di is married to Shyam. Yet his client insisted that he saw Anjali and Rohan together in Shimla. At that time, Arnav dismissed the comment as he knew that his sister was married and would have no close association with another man. Especially not with a man who dumped her on the day of their wedding.
Yet Arnav still refuses to believe his Di would stoop so low. He wants to dismiss the client's comment and Khushi's picture as coincidence. Hi Di is not the deceiving, cheating type. He keeps repeating like a mantra that the picture is an edit. But being the head of one of India's powerhouse in the fashion industry, his expert eyes knows that the picture Khushi showed is not an edit.
Arnav strides to the hotel guest service, praying in his heart that Khushi is wrong. His Di cannot be here.
Arnav (brusquely): I need you to look up if a certain person is a guest in your hotel.
Receptionist (politely responds): I am sorry sir but we cannot give out information on any of our guests. We respect and value their privacy.
Arnav (threatens): Do you know WHO I AM?
Receptionist: Sir...
Arnav (interrupts): I am Arnav Singh Raizada! Owner and MD of AR Industries. (Threateningly) I am friends with owner of the Oberoi and if I want to (snapping his fingers) I can have you fired from this job instantly. Do you understand?
Receptionist (still polite): Sir I am sorry we can't give out any information as it is against the Oberoi's policy.
Arnav: I want to speak to YOUR MANAGER RIGHT THIS INSTANCE!
Receptionist (sighs): Yes sir.
Arnav, seething in anger, turns around and leans against the desk. He glares at the guests milling about here and there. Some noticing his black, forbidding expression ran away with trepidation. Staring intently into the distance, he notices a familiar feminine figure in a long skirt. She just stepped out of the elevator in the arms of a man and walking towards Ziya. Arnav notices the pronounced limp in her walk and she is about the same size as Anjali.
Though his instinct is screaming that it's Anjali, he still was not ready to accept because his Di does not wear anything but sarees.
After a short internal debate, he decides to follow the couple to the restaurant. Standing right at the entrance, he has a clear view of the lady and gentleman being escorted to their table. To his utter dismay, the lady is none other than his darling Di.
Arnav stood motionless for a few moments. He can no longer deny that his Di is in Mumbai with her ex-fiance.
But does it mean she's having an affair with him? Maybe they are just friends.
He did his best to reason out an acceptable explanation but he can no longer deny the truth.
Why didn't Di tell me that she was coming to Mumbai or come with me?
Di has been keeping secrets, lying, betraying their family...betraying him.
Arnav needs more information before he faces his Di and demands answers to his questions. Plastering on a charming smile, he requests the hostess to sit him at the table adjacent to them but on the opposite side of the wall. He cannot just storm in and face his sister right away. Arnav is not ready to face the inevitable just yet.
He was scorted to the table that would obscure the couple's view of him but allow him to eavesdrop on their conversation. He sits down and silently motions the waiter to give him more time to peruse the menu. Holding up the said menu, he listens intently.
Rohan: Anjali darling aren't you worried Arnav? You know now that his wife knows about us, I am sure she will tell him.
Anjali (laughs): Darling you worry too much. Arnav would NEVER believe that chit's words. (Mockingly) Arnav believe his sweet Di having an affair? (Laughs) NEVER! He would instead slay that **** for daring to state such blasphemy against me, his Darling Di. She knows her limits.
Arnav clenches his fists in anger. It's hard to digest the venomous words spewing out of his Di's mouth.
Rohan: What about the child?
Anjali (dismissively): What about her?
Rohan: Mind you I have no wish to be discovered. It will cause endless trouble for us both. But was it necessary to be harsh to the little girl?
Anjali (in a hard tone): Yes it was necessary! I am the most important person in Arnav's life and I DON'T intend to give that up. Plus I doubt she is even Arnav's daughter. But even if she is his daughter, she and her **** of a mother will just have to take the back seat. It's a power struggle darling and I am the winner and intend to remain the winner. (Laughs) Why do you think I had a hand in motivating Shyam to go the terrace the night of Akash's wedding? Because I knew Arnav was going there to propose to Khushi. Tsk...tsk...! I couldn't allow that. No...no...no. I thought it best to expose Shyam's true nature and his obsession for Khushi to Arnav so he can stop pursuing her. (Angry) But my damn brother decided to go ahead and marry her!
Arnav closes his eyes in pain.
Di knew about Shyam all along. How could she? How could she do this to me, to Khushi?!? I threatened and bullied her into a contract marriage...all for a farce, for Di...no...Anjali Jha's deceitful indulgence?
Rohan: Very calculating my dear.
Anjali (cajolingly): It's all for you darling. Shyam is a convenience and an excellent cover for our affair since you are in no position to leave that worthless wife of yours. (Shrugging her shoulders) I had no choice but to pitch a fit when Arnav kicked him out. I needed him as a cover for our baby or else he would have exposed us.
Rohan: Aren't you worried he might kidnap Arnav or someone else in the family again?
Anjali (dismissively): Shyam and I have a deal. I know just how to control him. He knows his limits. One wrong move against me and all his luxuries (snapping her fingers) will disappear in a poof.
Bile rose in Arnav's throat. His sweet, loving Di is in reality a manipulative monster. She doesn't care that his life was endangered by her mad man of a husband. All because he is a convenience and she didn't want her affairs exposed. It hurts his heart to know that the Di for whom he would have gladly given up his life, sees him as nothing but a puppet with deep pocket that she relishes controlling.
Rohan receives an urgent phone call and excuses himself from the table.
As Arnav saw Rohan leave the vicinity, the time has come for the inevitable. He must face Mrs. Jha and tell her in unequivocal terms that he is no longer her puppet. Arnav may have been willing to forgive her deceit and manipulations but she has been the primary reason that Khushi has been hurt numerous times. And to top it off she had the audacity to hurt his daughter, her very own niece! No more. He is no longer her Chote.
Arnav (approaches Anjali, sits at the recently abandoned chair and greets her coldly): Hello Di. Fancy meeting you here in Mumbai. (Mockingly) Now that your dinner partner has so conveniently stepped away, we should have a little chat. Don't you think?
Anjali blinks her eyes in distress. This can't be happening when she took measures to ensure that the unfolding drama does not happen.
Ohh no! That **** revealed my secret to Arnav. Damn! Tread carefully Anjali...tread carefully. I have held the power for far too long to concede to her! Just stay cool...dearest little brother here can be easily manipulated...and turn the table on that interfering ****!
Anjali (smiles): Chote! What a pleasant surprise! I didn't expect to see you here in Mumbai.
Arnav (sarcastic): Really Di? I could have sworn that I told you and Nani that I was coming to Mumbai when I left. Must have forgotten...how remiss of me.
Anjali (clasps Arnav's hands): I am sorry Chote...you probably did and (sheds a few tears and sniffles) it must have right around the time I received terrible news about my friend. You remember school friend, Reina? She lives in Mumbai now. (Sheds a few more tears) I just came to support her. Bechari had a miscarriage and she's in terrible shape. (Lips trembling) I know what it's like to go through that painful experience so thought to help her through it. I am sorry Chote for not telling you... I was just so distracted.
Arnav (feral smile): Reina? But I distinctly remember you telling us that she divorced her husband last year. Is it the same Reina?
Unbelievable Di! Just freakin' unbelievable! Making up horrid lies to cover your track.
Anjali (stutters): They were separated...and was... going to file for divorce. But...umm...they resolved their issues and reunited. (Pretending sadness) She was so happy to find out she's carrying and now she's just devastated.
Arnav: It's very tragic Di and I am very sorry for her loss. So did you come to dinner with your friend?
Anjali (quickly): Yes! Thought an outing would do her a world of good and help her out of the depression.
Arnav: Of course Di. (Muses) But I thought I saw Rohan Sharma with you and he just walked away to answer a phone call.
Caught you on your first lie Anjali Jha, let's see how extract yourself out of it.
Anjali (laughs nervously): Ohh yes well...Reina was not feeling well and her husband came to pick us up when we met Rohan. It has been years and we both thought we should talk, renew our friendship. After all, now we are both happily married. So why still hold a grudge and not be civil?
Arnav (mockingly): You are an adult Di...you can form a RELATIONSHIP with anyone you please.
Nice save Mrs. Jha...nice save.
Anjali (defensively): Chote...I would hardly call it a relationship. We are just simply acquaintances now. Nothing more...and nothing less. I would never hurt our family and forge relationships that you wouldn't approve.
Arnav (smiles tightly): Of course not...you are too perfect to make such a mistake. (Casually) So who else have you met in Mumbai?
Anjali (contemplates for a moment before answering): Well...Chote I don't know how to tell you this...but...umm...I saw Khushiji. Chote please forgive me. I should have told you the minute I met her so you can try to work things out with her. (With tears in her eyes) I so wish for the two of you to reunite. Khushiji is your happiness and I'll do anything to help you two get back together.
Arnav (pretending): Di I am going tell you the real reason that I am here in Mumbai. It's for Khushi...(pauses) so we can file and finalize our divorce.
Anjali (trying to conceal her joy): Chote please don't...she's your life, your happiness. She fills your bleak existence with color. You have been a zombie withour her.
Arnav: I have made up my mind Di.
Excellence performance Mrs. Jha. You should consider a career in acting.
Anjali (dramatic sigh): Very well Chote...but I hope you reconsider.
Arnav: She told me that she met you twice and she had some very interesting things to say about the encounters.
Anjali (stiffens): Like what?
Arnav (dismissively): Ohh just that you felt awful for her and her daughter. (Derisively) The child is most definitely not mine. She is the byproduct of her affair with some other unsuspecting fool. (Raises an eyebrow) But she has convinced you otherwise that Tara is my daughter. Khushi told me with quite some relish that you agreed to transfer your AR shares to her name. She is now demanding it on the divorce settlement. (Sighs) Di I wish you hadn't said anything. She even has a recording of it so now I don't have a choice but to follow through with her demands. I am afraid I am going to need your signature for the transfer paperwork.
Anjali (furiously): That lying ****! I said nothing of that sort to her and her damned brat. Arnav don't you dare agree to give her MY shares in the company. I knew she was a gold digger after our family fortune!
Arnav (raises a brow): My my Di...you surprise me. Didn't you just say that Khushi is my life, my happiness and you would do anything for us to get back together? But now you are claiming she is a gold digger. Tsk...tsk. Now what shall I believe?
Anjali (realizing her blunder): Chote...umm...what I meant...
Arnav (interrupting): I know what I should believe...I should believe my Khushi. (Angrily) I heard the real recording of your last conversation with her. Let me make one thing very clear to you Mrs. Jha, SHE IS MY WIFE and TARA IS MY DAUGHTER! Do you understand? And I won't tolerate ANY insults against them!
Anjali (still trying to cover up): Chote it's all a misunderstanding...
Arnav (interrupts): I have seen and heard enough. I know you are having an affair with Rohan even though you are both married. Aren't you ashamed of yourself Di? How could you do this to another woman?!?
Anjali (pretending to cry): Chote...how could you think like that about your Di? Me having an affair...? Chi...! You are misunderstanding...
Arnav: Spare me the lies! I saw the picture of...you and Rohan. (Holds up his hands to quieten Anjali) No please before you claim it was edited, you and I both know I can tell when it's an edit. And that was no edit. (Pointing at his previous table) I was sitting right over there, behind the wall. And I could hear clearly the conversation you had with your lover. You want to claim that's also a misunderstanding?
Anjali (stops crying, shrugs and smiles faintly): I won't deny that Rohan and I have been seeing each other. Now that you know about our affair are you going to spread gossip and put our family reputation in jeopardy?
Arnav: I am not done. Why did you create misunderstandings between Khushi and I? Does my happiness mean nothing to you? Why did you clamor to get Shyam back knowing that he has kidnapped and tried to kill me? How could you betray me, our family? You were my world Di but you destroyed it.
Anjali (callously): Arnav you of all people should know it's a dog eat dog world. I looked out for numero uno. I may have created incidences, but you were always ready to believe them despite Khushi's protests. (Laughs viciously) So don't blame me for your lack of faith. Now you and I both know that you won't do much, because at the end of the day I am still your Di.
Arnav (coldly): That's where you are wrong Mrs. Jha. You are no longer my Di. You and Shyam are going to move out of Shantivan.
Anjali (interrupts furiously): I will not! Shantivan is as much as your home as it is mine.
Arnav (muses): I am sure if the police start an investigation into my kidnapping they will be able to trace the sum paid to the kidnappers directly out of your account. They can charge you for complicity in the kidnapping.
Anjali (snarls): Damn you Arnav! How dare you threaten me?!?
Arnav (continues unruffled): You are going to find your own place and move out. You will no longer have unlimited access to funds. The credit cards you and your sniveling husband use all the time, consider them canceled.
Anjali: You can't cut off my access to funds?!?
Arnav: I can and I will. I will buy out your shares in the company. You can live off the money from that.
Anjali (grins smugly): Don't forget we added Shyam as a shareholder to the original 3, you, Akash and I. Therefore, you will have to buy back 50% of the shares and pay me accordingly. (Laughs) That won't be easy feat to do.
Arnav: Ahh yes. I remember the amendment that you requested when you were pregnant. Let me tell you the details that were put in, I am surprised you didn't read before signing. It claims that should the three of us have children with our spouses then the children and spouse get equal shares. So as it stands now, Akash and Payal have a child so combined they have a 43% stake. Khushi and I have Tara so we have a 43% stake in the shares. (Mockingly) Unfortunately for you, you have no child with Shyam so you actually own 14% of the shares.
Anjali (shouts): No! You are making it up! I would have never signed it.
Arnav: But you did because you were confident that signing such a document would give you the highest percentage of shares at that time. (Shrugs) I am sure you had ringed out an agreement with Shyam about his portion. But not to fret Mrs. Jha, I shall buy back your 14% at a competitive price. I'll get Aman to start the proceedings right away. (Mockingly) Perhaps it won't afford you the luxuries of Shantivan, but you should be able to live comfortably.
Anjali (hisses in anger): I will have my lawyer thoroughly study the damned document because I won't be fleeced! Arnav you may think that you have won by taking away the luxuries that I am used to but I stil have Rohan. (Smiles) I am sure he will take care of me.
Arnav (shrugs and stands up): Whatever suits you. Just one more thing before I leave...stay the hell away from my family! (Threatens) If I ever find out that you have tried to hurt Khushi and Tara again, then there will be hell to pay.
He leaves a stewing Anjali as she awaits the return of Rohan. As her temper mounts, she impatiently waits for another 10 minutes. She has been approached several times by the waiter to take their orders. But she has sent him back, claiming to wait for her partner.
Rohan finally comes back to his sit with a harried expression.
Anjali (snaps): Where the hell have you been? Was it that important that you had to answer it NOW in the middle of our dinner?!?
Rohan (tense and avoiding Anjali's eyes): Anjali...umm...I don't know how to say this. But my wife...well...she is pregnant.
Anjali (narrows her eyes): Yours?
Rohan (snaps): Of course she's pregnant with my child!
Anjali (furiously): I thought you had no interest in her physically?
Rohan (sputters): Well...things...happen. Anyway...I was thinking...umm...it's really not fair to her, now that she is having my baby...umm...that I continue to...umm...what I am trying to say is that...it's not fair to her that I continue to dally with you.
Anjali (gapes): What the hell?!? (Shouting) You are BREAKING UP WITH ME?
Rohan (avoiding her gaze): I am sorry Anjali but I have to think about my family now. I have been too selfish. Now that I am going to be a father, I need to be more responsible. Set a good example. (Stands up) I am really sorry Anjali but it's over.
If looks could kill, Rohan Sharma would be dead by now. No one dares to mess with Anjali Malik.
