Singh Saab The Great Review: 'Return Of The Desi Action Hero...'
Expectations:
I still remember the day Sunny Deol's 'Gadar: Ek Prem Katha' had released, someone told me that in this movie there is a scene where Sunny scares more than dozen people by just roaring at them. I found it very unconvincing and over the top, till the time I saw the movie. Sunny Deol and the director Anil Sharma together made it completely convincing. The macho image of Sunny makes you believe it with total intensity. Along with this, there were other movies like 'Kshatriya', 'Narsimha', 'Ghayal', 'Jeet'. 'Ghatak', 'Border', 'Indian' and many more where one could see the super macho image of Sunny Deol along with some great action scenes. Watching his movies used to give you the feeling of watching a 'Hulk' movie where one wants the super hero to get angry so that he can bash the villains. Gradually, his films started lacking the intensity and many of them were mere clones of his earlier films leading to steep downfall for this desi action hero. After almost a decade, Sunny comes back in an action drama and this time under the direction of Anil Sharma, who gave Sunny his biggest blockbuster film -'Gadar : Ek Prem Katha'. This movie seems to be bit different than usual run of the mill type south Indian remakes with overdose of computer generated effects action by some unconvincing actors like Shahid Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, Shah Rukh Khan and many more. So let's find out whether 'Singh Saab The Great' will mark the comeback of original desi action hero Sunny Deol and manage to hit the bull's-eye or might just be another addition to all those so called masala entertainers gone total wrong.
Story:
'Singh Saab The Great' is story of an honest district collector Saranjeet Singh (Sunny Deol) who lives happily with his wife Minni (Urvashi Rautela) and Sister (Anjali Abrol). Saranjeet is very strict and honest when it comes to follow his duties and while performing them he comes in contact with Bhudev Singh (Prakash Raj). Bhudev Singh is a corrupt person following all the wrong malpractice and this is where the enmity between him and Saranjeet Singh begins. This leads to lot of twist and what happens next is what the entire film is all about.
Screenplay & Technicalities:
The good thing about the story is that it is not copied from any south Indian film nor has any western influence. It's nothing different or unusual but still has a decent premise in it. The first half is full of good action scenes, intense drama and gripping screenplay, which gets diluted only due to the weak romantic track in the film. The second half starts on the dragging note with some unwanted drama. The film comes back on right track towards the last hour and delivers few more entertaining and engaging scenes especially between Sunny Deol and Prakash Raj. Almost every scene between these two actors is gripping and enjoyable. It's only the romantic part and few other side tracks including the sister angle, are big pain to watch. They looked total out of place and done to death. The chemistry between Sunny and Urvashi fails miserably mostly due to the latter's weak performance. Also, after a while the social message attached to the film starts getting preachy and ends up on verbose level. The movie has strong Punjabi flavor attached to it with lots of action scenes which might not go well with the multiplex and non Punjabi audience. The film should have been strictly trimmed down by fifteen twenty minutes making it crisp and engaging.
Music & Direction:
Music by Anand Raj Anand and Sonu Nigam is fine but nothing much to boast about. The title track goes well with the credit titles. 'Daru Band Kal Se' is entertaining with surprise cameo by Dharmendra and Bobby Deol. 'Palang Todh' is more of skin show for B-grade audience. Other songs should have been omitted. Background music was super loud and jarring at times.
Director Anil Sharma is known for making some of good action drama type films with total entertainment attached to it. The moment he announced his latest venture and that too with Sunny Deol, the expectations grew up high. Anil Sharma with his expertise manages to come close to the high expectations and deliver a decent film than his last few duds. He tried to add a hard hitting issue to his film with backdrop of Punjabi hardcore action and succeeds only in moderate way.
Performances:
Sunny Deol was superb in all his action scenes and like his earlier films was total convincible in the super action scenes. This movie might not be one of his great films but surely has the similar intensity attached to it. Urvashi Rautela looked beautiful but acted equally bad. Her track and the ghostly images keep you disinterested in the film. Amrita Rao was not up to the mark. Anjali Abrol was fine but at times was bit loud. Prakash Raj was enjoyable after a long time and gives good opposition to Sunny Deol. Jhonny Lever, Rajit Kapoor and Sanjay Mishra lend good support. Shahbaaz Khan, Yashpal Sharma, Manoj Pawa, Ravi Jhankal and others were fine.
So bol meri "FILMI KHOPDI" iss film mein kitna hain Dum?
Dum? Well if you are a Sunny Deol or masala action movie lover then this movie has all the dum you want. On one side the action, dialogs and intensity works in the favor of the film on the other side the80's styled loud drama, love story, overdose of songs and few unwanted tracks dilutes the flow of the film. Similarly, the masses will love this film but the intellectual audience might struggle with this movie mainly due to its length and overall effects. Only if you forget everything else and just look at the Sunny Deol's fight and dramatic scenes you will be highly entertained and will sure like the return of the desi action hero.
