(Before starting with my hour long diatribe, for the people who don't know the meaning of adios', it means goodbye'.)
Suvreen Guggal-Topper of the Year... the show started with a realistic backdrop, believable characters, suave actors and a well scripted storyline. Then, what went wrong? What led to the drastic fall in the members of this forum or the drastic fall in TRPs?
Read on...
I started watching SG in the 12th grade, having aspirations, challenges and insecurities of my own. So, when I chanced upon a character that was feisty, debonair, and benevolent, it instantly appealed to my psyche. And why shouldn't it be? She was the embodiment of everything righteous, everything that I value or a girl of my age does. Who wouldn't love a small town girl venturing into a big city with dreams of her own making? Who wouldn't venerate a girl who loved her parents and wanted to fulfill their dreams?
As was the case, it did attract the masses (as is evidenced by the number of likes it garnered in Facebook, or the TRPs it clinched in the initial days).
Now, the storyline. Yes, the character was realistic. Yes, she had struck a chord. But what about the story? Was it commendable?
The answer again would be a resounding yes. The college backdrop, the portrayal of her life in the big city was as believable as Suvreen's character. We youngsters crave different, we crave characters which are agreeable, which are unique from the Saas-Bahu sagas. And this show was it. š
Again, the question arises: what spelled its downfall then?
I think the experimentation and the nonchalance of CVs did.
Suvreen's friendship with Annie-Naro, her bittersweet relation with Yuvraj, her loving relation with her parents, her interaction with Principal, with Anish, with Gyanesh. It was SO realistic. It was like we could feel every bit of emotion that she felt. (I would have given a summary but I am not gonna bore you than I am already) I was so mesmerized by the story, by Suvreen, that it became my favorite show in no time. It had the perfect mix of everything- drama, comedy, friendship, love, angst. Every. DAMN. Thing. However, the thing which entranced me the most had to be her principles. To protest against what is wrong. To fight for what is right. To bring change in the society. āļø
But then, the inevitable happened and this effin' brilliant show lost its mojo (Yep, Castle, you did too). It became the dragging, monotonous romantic show, with various antagonists and more than one love interest. The characters that could have had great potential like Princy and Anish were dropped, the writing lost its crispness, the other characters lost their freshness, and thus, in the end, the show lost its charm. Yep, we lost out on what could have been an epic show. š
Another thing which I would want to mention is- the sudden change in Yuvraj. In the initial days he was shown as a cocky, uncouth, and a troublesome young man with an airy charm. While, I would have appreciated a gradual change in his character, he was suddenly shown to be mature, and a sappy person whose life started revolving around Suvreen. Whatever happened to that independent streak? Whatever happened to the mischievous demeanor? His character just like Suvreen lost its appeal to me.
I won't even start with the inclusion of characters like Rehan and Alisha and Samar and blah blah blah. Because though, I don't have anything against them, I preferred the college ki masti and innocence more than office politics and conspiracies. (RC was still acceptable till the point he stayed in Delhi and mentored Suvreen. Uske baad...)
Oh, and I hope Alisha dies. She is such an eyesore. (Sorry about the randomness) š”
I don't know about you guys but I joined IF exclusively for Suvreen. I wrote my first fanfiction on this show and I used to be a regular member as well. But overtime, I grew tired of it and quit watching the show as well as this forum. This angry outburst is just the culmination of my frustration.
I hope I did not hurt anyone's feelings. If I did, you have my sincerest apologies. š
And last, I might dislike this show now but there are things that I will always cherish about this show. I still use chopsy' (instead of jhand') and KK (uh-huh for kutta kamina). I still have YuvReen's pictures in my PC and still watch the videos of the initial 3-4 months. š
Though, I am almost indifferent to its ending (good riddance), Smriti and Shivin have my best wishes.
A special mention to Sahas, a long lost friend, who struck with this forum even when the rest of the members had abandoned it. Your loyalty is astounding, girlfriend.
(If you read till the end, then thanks. And it would be a pleasure to know your views as well.) š³
