Hello Friends
this month is lung cancer awareness month

November is officially Lung Cancer Awareness Month. This all started as Lung Cancer Awareness Day way back in 1995. As the lung cancer community and the lung cancer movement grew, the awareness activities increased and grew into Lung Cancer Awareness Month.

Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. It is a leading cause of cancer death in men and women in the world. Cigarette SMOKING causes most lung cancers. The more cigarettes you smoke per day and the earlier you started smoking, the greater your risk of lung cancer. High levels of pollution, radiation and asbestos exposure may also increase risk.

Common symptoms of lung cancer include

  • A cough that doesn't go away and gets worse over time
  • Constant chest pain
  • Coughing up blood
  • Shortness of breath, wheezing, or hoarseness
  • Repeated problems with pneumonia or bronchitis
  • Swelling of the neck and face
  • Loss of appetite or weight loss
  • Fatigue

There are many types of lung cancer. Each type of lung cancer grows and spreads in different ways and is treated differently. Treatment also depends on the stage, or how advanced it is. Treatment may include chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

"What is Lung Cancer?"
  • Cancer is a loss of normal control over cell growth and division. Uncontrolled cells form a tumour.
  • Lung cancer is cancer that arises from the lungs.
  • There are basically 2 types of lung cancer:
    • Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC)
    • Non-small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)
  • 80-85% of lung cancer cases are NSCLC.
  • Both types of lung cancer cells behave differently and are treated differently.

"Why is lung cancer so common today?"

  • In men, the routine issuing of cigarettes during the world wars led to many soldiers becoming addicted to smoking.
  • A major peak in the incidence of lung cancer in men occurs several years after the first and second world wars.
  • In women, smoking did not become fashionable until the 1960s.
  • The incidence of lung cancer in women did not peak until the 1970s or 1980s.
  • If everyone stopped smoking today, people would still develop lung cancer over the next 10, or even 20 years, because that's the incubation period for the disease.

Thank you Manu for yet another informative and very important thread 👏👏👏

I do not smoke, never did, though I have in my family people who smoke, so I guess I was my whole life a secondary smoker. I know it is a huge addiction, because some of my family members try to leave it, some succeed in it, but some not, though they know that it is not good for their health.

It is good to talk about it and raise awareness, and the fact that whole month is dedicated to that illness prove how wide spread it is and how affects a lot of people.

I pray and hope that people will take care about their health more seriously, and by doing that prevent any future complications and sickness.
