"Miss Zoya? Aapka hogaya kya?" Dolly's voice floated through the main bathroom door, making Asad step away from Zoya as situational awareness finally occurred to him again. Zoya blinked distractedly as she tried to orientate herself, and then opened her mouth slightly to answer Dolly. But before she could, Asad's palm came down on her mouth, silencing her.
"Aap yahan, darwaaze se itna kareeb se answer karogi, toh unhe kuch ajeeb nahi lagega? Bathroom ke stall mein jaake answer kijiye," Asad reasoned, and waited for Zoya to nod in agreement before deciding to remove his palm. But before he could get to it, they both found themselves redirecting their attention towards the sound of the doorknob turning on the bathroom door. The muffled sound of Zoya's panicked squeal came through his palm still pressed on her mouth, her eyes widening as she looked at Asad, seeking a solution.
Asad groaned inwardly and then quickly snaked his free arm around Zoya's waist, pulling her towards him. Then he shuffled himself and Zoya into the first bathroom stall, closing the stall door at the very same time the main bathroom door swung open. He leaned his back onto the closed stall door, trying to calm his quickened heartbeat, as Zoya pressed herself further into his body, her eyes squeezed shut in fear and her head resting at the very part of his chest that his heart was busy beating a pattern into.
Zoya sighed softly into Asad's palm, making him suddenly remember that it was still on her mouth. He removed it slowly, just to notice that Zoya's entire face was scrunched up in panic as she sought relief in him. It was when he removed his other arm away from her waist that she finally opened her eyes, tracing up from his chest to his face as she moved away from him. She let out another sigh, just as Asad placed his index finger on her lips to remind her not to speak.
"Miss Zoya? Aapka hogaya kya? Bohut time hogaya hai," Dolly repeated herself from outside the bathroom stall this time. She stepped forward towards the only closed bathroom stall and knocked on it urgently. Did this girl fall asleep in there or something?
"Jee? Jee... I mean, jee nahi! Woh... woh kya hai na... mere pet mein kuch garbar hai," Zoya replied, making up yet another dumb excuse. She punched Asad lightly on his arm as he scrunched up his face to contain his laughter.
"Pet mein garbar? Par aapne andar Mr Bhatawdekar se kaha tha ke aapko kuch female problems hai na?" Dolly pointed out, confused at how Zoya's story had changed within a few minutes. Asad's face scrunched up further and turned red, now both amused and a little embarrassed at where the conversation was headed.
"Haan! Woh mein andar jhoot bola tha. Kyun ki... telling someone that you've got diarrhoea is so embarrassing! I mean, what would the person think... or imagine for that matter! Isliye I lied and said female problems," Zoya answered, biting her lower lip in anticipation of Dolly's response to that. She chose to stop taking quick glances at Asad, who looked like he was about to erupt in laughter, just so she could maintain some kind of sanity in this madness.
"Telling a stranger you've got diarrhoea is more embarrassing than telling him you've got female problems...?" Dolly asked slowly as she chose her words as carefully as possible, trying to keep to being polite. Zoya threw a glare at Asad just as he lifted his palm to cover his mouth, muffling his small stifle.
"Haan, I mean... at least that's what I think. Meri marzi hai na! Okay whatever, Miss Dolly, aap bahar kyun nahi wait karti?" Zoya replied lamely, unable to defend herself logically any more. She decided to change the topic instead, hoping that would do the trick. And it did.
"Woh... main... mujhe bahar wait nahi karna. Woh... aapka boss... chalo chodo. Don't worry about me, I'm alright. I mean... I'm fine waiting here. You just hurry up. Or don't. No, I mean... take your time," Dolly replied distractedly, unsure about how to deal with someone having diarrhoea, as well as flustered about the earlier incident. Zoya raised an eyebrow as she turned to look at Asad, who just shrugged in response, not sure what Dolly was talking about either.
"Arre?! Aise kaise alright? Kya kiya Mr Khan ne? Tell me tell me! Tumhe kuch kaha kya? Woh hai hi aisa, MCP-type. Aap jaanti hai, woh mujhe bhi kitna daante rehte hai?? If you want me to, main usse acche se sabaq sikhaaungi, for harassing you as well," Zoya ranted, partially truthfully and partially just because she wanted to hear from Dolly why she was avoiding Asad. She ignored the look of irritation that Asad was throwing at her at the end of her rant.
"Nahi!! Nahi nahi nahi, he didn't harass me at all. In fact, unhone mere saath bohut hi acche se baat ki. Actually baat yeh hai, ke he'd asked his assistant, Prasad, to make me a cup of coffee. And when Prasad asked me what kind of coffee I preferred, I just told him to make the coffee the same way he makes it for his boss... because... because I didn't want to trouble Prasad with my preferences. So he did, and when I drank it, it was horrible! Kitni black aur bitter thi! Aapke boss aisi coffee kaise peete hai Miss Zoya?! So I had no choice but to throw it down the sink. Isliye mujhe bahar wait nahi karna. If he walks by and asks me about the coffee, I don't know if I'll be able to lie with a straight face," Dolly finally admitted, simply because she really did want to tell someone and get it off her chest. She felt really stupid for asking for coffee the way Asad liked it, even Prasad looked like he wanted to laugh once she'd said that.
Zoya laughed openly, unable to contain her amusement at Dolly's confession. She turned to stare at Asad's annoyed face, and then burst out into even louder laughter, clutching her stomach as she bent over in her laughter. Asad rolled his eyes and crossed his arms, huffing sarcastically as he did.
"Haan, woh aisi hi coffee peete hai, since it's a reflection of his personality as well. Chalo theek hai, aap yehi wait kijiye. Lekin... mujhe thoda sa sharam aa rahi hai, because you can hear me in the bathroom, that too while my stomach's upset. That makes me a little uncomfortable. Aap ek kaam kijiye, can you turn on one of the taps at the sinks outside? That way I know my sounds will be drowned out, and I won't be so uncomfortable anymore," Zoya tried, her fingers crossed behind her back. Surprisingly, Dolly obliged without question, the sound of running water filling up the silence of the bathroom in no time. Zoya sighed in relief as she turned to Asad, who was nodding at her with a raised eyebrow, impressed at how she'd tricked Dolly into drowning out their conversation.
"Haan, toh aapne kya kya answers diye the Mr Bhataw-whatever ko?" Zoya whispered into Asad's ear, leaning gently into him as she rested her palm on his upper arm. Asad shook his head in amusement, smiling a little. How did it end up this way?
He was about to answer when he felt his phone vibrate in his pants pocket. He suddenly realized that he could just take his phone out and show Zoya the text message he'd sent her, then there wouldn't be a need to talk at all. But as he turned his attention back to Zoya, who was intently leaning into him as she waited for his response, he changed his mind. This way was definitely how he wanted to do it.
"Haan, toh maine yeh kaha tha, ke aap yahan teen hafte se kaam kar rahi ho..." Asad began to explain, leaning his head into Zoya's. He tucked an errant strand of hair behind her ear, and then let his fingers linger there. He moved his head even closer, letting his lips brush her ear as he whispered into it. Zoya turned all shades of red, as she tried to concentrate on his words and not his actions.
"Thank you Mr Khan, for everything," Zoya whispered back to Asad when he was done telling her all that he needed to. She made sure her lips were as close to his ear as his was to hers earlier when she whispered her thanks. She impulsively dropped a feather-light kiss on his face, on the skin near his ear, and then pulled away quickly, hoping he didn't notice. But from the gradual widening of his eyes, she could tell he did.
Deciding that she ought to just leave immediately instead of engaging in an awkward conversation to explain herself, Zoya placed her palms squarely on his chest as she pushed his backwards onto the side of the bathroom stall next to the door, and then opened the stall door in his face, blocking him from being seen as she walked out.
Asad heard the taps being turned off and then waited in silence till he heard the main bathroom door swing open and close again. He walked out of the bathroom stall and came face-to-face with the mirrors at the sinks, staring at himself in it as he fell into deep thought. Did Zoya just kiss him, or was it all in his imagination?
He finally shook his head and decided not to think about it anymore, as he turned towards the main door, but then stopped right before walking towards it. Something had caught his eye. He turned back to the mirror, and turned his head slightly to the left, inspecting the area near his ear. He touched it slowly, a small smile forming on his face. That baby pink mark on his face... it was Zoya's lipstick. He was sure of it.
