MUMBAI: Ranbir Kapoor, the new super star of Bollywood, has reached yet another territory that has been the preserve of the three Khans -- Shahrukh, Salman or Aamir: Disney UTV has closed a co-production deal for his upcoming film Jagga Jasoos for about Rs 100 crore.
Siddharth Roy Kapur, managing director of Disney UTV, confirmed the deal with Picture Shuru Productions, a new production firm launched by Ranbir Kapoor and director Anurag Basu. Roy Kapur, however, did not confirm the project value and added it was definitely not close to the above figure. More than one trade insider told ET that Disney UTV has shelled out almost Rs 100 crore on the deal.
The deal is yet another milestone in Kapoor's steady climb to the top.
"He is on a growth trajectory which seems to be unstoppable and age is on his side, he has proved his versatility as an actor, and shown that he can get the money whether it is a Barfi! or a Yeh Jawani," Apoorva Mehta, CEO of Dharma Productions, said.
"He has made some very smart career moves and all his 'so called gambles' have paid off handsomely, so it no surprise that everyone wants to be associated with the young actor," added Mehta, who produced Kapoor's latest blockbuster Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani.
In May this year, Fox Star Studios had acquired Bombay Velvet, another upcoming Ranbir Kapoor film, from Viacom 18 Motion Pictures. Trade insiders said the deal was signed for Rs 80-90 crore, but the studio has denied the high figure.
Jagga Jasoos is a musical comedy about a young detective and his zany adventures.
Disney UTV believes it has the potential to emerge as the first Disney branded franchise out of India, with scope for sequels, merchandise, graphic comics, a television show, online games and much more.
Besides the deal amount, the studio is expected to spend another Rs 20 crore on print and publicity, making Jagga Jasoos a Rs 120-crore project.
Satellite, music and overseas rights are expected to cover at least half that cost while the rest of the production cost is expected to be easily covered with the first weekend's collections, going by Kapoor's growing popularity.
Studios are putting good money on the 30-year-old grandson of Raj Kapoor and son of Rishi Kapoor.
The only studio that got a great deal recently was Reliance Entertainment, which acquired Kapoor's soon-to-be released film Besharam for an estimated Rs 55-60 crore.
As an actor, Kapoor has already moved to profit-sharing deals with his last couple of films. "He is smart and knows his worth and potential," a studio head said on condition of anonymity.
For now, Kapoor charges an acting fee of around Rs 15 crore and then like the Khans add a profit-sharing model, which could be as high as 30% or more.
Now, with co-production, he would get a large share of the intellectual property rights as well. So Kapoor would end up with the largest share in the collaboration between Picture Shuru and Disney UTV for Jagga Jasoos.
