Yesterday (Sunday), on 5pm Saif (36) was heading towards the Stardust Awards at the Bandra-Kurla Complex. While heading he complained about chest pain. He soon rushed to Lilavati Hospital. Saif immediately admitted to the intensive care unit and kept under ECG. His heartbeat was irregular.
An angiography was made, which showed that the actor is suffering from a myocardial infarction. A condition brought on by the lack of blood supply to the heart. The team led by cardiologist Vivek Mehan. Saif now is out of danger, but will be kept under observation for next two days.
Meanwhile, Saif received the award for best actor in a negative role for his film 'Omkara'. 'Omkara' who own much critical acclaim last year. As Saif was not present to receive the award, his director Vishal Bharadwaj who had no idea what had happened, went on stage to receive Khan's award and joked that stars are traditionally late.
But soon the news spread, many celebrities left the awards function and rushed to hospital. Sanjay Dutt and Amitabh Bachchan, were among the first to reach the hospital. Also the other film personalities like Preity Zinta, Fardeen Khan, Kunal Kohli and Jackie Shroff, Vidhu Vinod Chopra rushed to see him.
Cardiologist Dr BC Kalmath said, "Myocardial infarction is quite common among South Asians and Indians. A large study done by noted cardiologist BK Goyal recently revealed that it is increasingly common in people in the 30-40 age group, which wasn't the case till a few years ago."
According to Kalmath, there are a number of factors like gene modification, abdominal obesity, smoking, lifestyle, lack of dietary control, and lack of exercise, which can contribute to this condition.
It can be heredity also. "Studies have revealed that if your parents have suffered a heart attack, you are four times more prone to it," he added. Khan had family history of heart trouble.
