PART 32

Arohis breath caught in her chest. Was she dreaming? Or maybe hallucinating!

Time stood still as she was completely lost in staring back at the person who was slowly advancing towards her. The dark silhouette came into the dimlight of her room and Arohis heart skipped a beat seeing the passion in the hazelnut orbs.

Arjun didnot think or even want to go near Arohi because his mind was blank. He was not even aware that his feet were involuntarily advancing where his heart wished to be. The sharp clicking of his shoes resonated in the silence but Arohi stayed where she was, waiting for her heart beat to come back to normal. An invisible thread between their eyes, seemed to pull Arjun towards her. He stopped two feet away from her and his eyes left hers to scan her half-clothed form thoroughly. As soon as Arjun moved his eyes, Arohi came back to the present.

She jerked back two steps realising where she was and her hands went to her chest, grabbing the towel knot tightly. "Tum??? Tum yaha... iss waqt?"

Arjun could not speak, he gulped his words to wet his throat. He could see the rising panic in her eyes and he took a step forward to assure her. His foot slipped over the water that had been dripping off her body and he jerked ahead. Arohi was shocked for a moment but she moved quickly, holding him by his waist to save him from falling. Arjuns hands clasped over her bare shoulders, holding them firmly. When sanity returned, they found themselves in each others arms with not even an inch of distance between their bodies. Their hands loosened the grips over the other, but neither of them let go.

Arjuns thumbs caressed the baby soft skin of her shoulders and smiled when goosebumps broke out under his fingers. "Mein... tumse... tumse kuch kehne aaya tha..."

Arohi eyes searched his. But all she could see was the reflection on her recently realised love in his soft gaze. Her heart soared up to cloud number nine but her brain chided her. Just because you have fallen in love with him doesn't mean he has too. Let him say the words.'

Trying to control her heartbeats Arohi gave him a small smile. "Kya kehna chahte ho?"

"Yahi ki..." Arjuns eyes were stuck to her face. She looked like a fresh flower after rains, with dew drops on her face. "... ki tum bohot khoobsurat ho!"

Arohi eyes widened as Arjun leaned in closer to her. Diverting away from her face, he dug his nose in the crook of her neck and inhaled the smell of her shower gel. Arohi shut her eyes as Arjuns warm breath washed over her freshly scrubbed skin. Arjun slightly turned his head and flicked his tongue on the water drop on her ears. Arohi shivered in response and Arjun felt the vibrations. Bending more, he dropped a soft kiss at the base of her neck, kissing his way towards her shoulders. His hands skimmed down her arms leaving a warm trail.

Arohi clenched Arjuns shirt at his waist in her palms, unable to bear the torture. Arjuns hands came up and his forefingers traced the edge of the towel at her chest, his warm skin whispering hers. Lifting his head, he moved to the other side to repeat the same. After he was done punishing her, he rubbed his nose on her neck and inhaled again. Arohis hands went around his back and she hugged him tight. Arjun held her firmly, roaming his eager hands on the soft fabric of the towel on her back.

"Arohi..."

"Hmm..."

"Kal... make sure you don't have any evening appointments."

Arohi smiled against his shirt with her eyes closed. "Kyu?"

"Kyuki kal mein tumhe... hamari pehli official date pe le jaana chahta hoon."

Arohi opened her eyes and moved her head back to look at him. "Tum YE batane ke liye aaye ho?"

"Haan."

Her smile dropped. "Ye toh tum phone pe bhi keh sakte they!"

Arjuns eyebrows jumped up. "Phone pe keh deta toh itna achha nazara kaise dekhne milta."

Despite her disappointment, Arohi blushed furiously.

"Kyu? Tum kuch aur expect karrahi thi?"

Arohi looked down shyly shaking her head. "Maine abhi tak dad ko..."

"I know. Take your time. Lekin maine dadi ko bata diya..."

Arohis head lifted sharply again. "Already? Abhi toh tum yaha se gaye they?"

"Haan toh? Ghar pe drop karne se pehle bol diya. Dadi kehti hai nek kaam mein deri nahi karni chahiye!"

Arohi narrowed her eyes. He was talking like a good boy who followed all of his dadi's instructions religiously.

"I just have one request. Please wear white tomorrow."

"White kyu?"

"Kyuki white mein tum bohat achhi lagti ho." Arjun smiled and looked down suggestively at the white towel wrapped around her body. Arohi smacked his arm and Arjun jerked. They both laughed.

"Ab mein jaau?"

Arohi nodded her head and started leaving him. But Arjun jerked her back on his chest.

"Aise nahi!" The huskiness in Arjuns voice told her what was coming.

Arjun grabbed the back of Arohis head and tilted it to one side. His eager lips descended quickly and latched on to her wet ones. The kiss started very slow, with Arjun taking his time in tasting the sweetness at his own leisure. Inhaling sharply, he opened his mouth and sucked on her lips like a child sucking on candy. Arohi shuddered and submitted herself to the pleasure. After he finished his thorough exploration, Arjun leaned back and smiled looking at her red lips and pink cheeks. Dropping a quick peck on her nose, he left her and turned towards the balcony.

"Be careful!"

The words immediately came out of Arohis mouth stopping Arjun abruptly at the railing and he turned behind.

"Agar sachme meri itni fikar hai toh please kuch kapde pehen lo."

Arohi blushed and he winked at her. In the next moment he was gone. Arohi gasped and rushed towards the balcony. Realising her half-clothed state she stopped mid-way. Smiling into space she turned towards her cupboard to do what he had asked for.

Ahluwalia Aashiana... study... 15 mins later

"Nai beta. Achha kiya jo tumne mujhe bataya. Arohi ko mein bata doonga."

"Ok uncle. I was just... a lil bit worried for her."

"I know Danish. Arohi is lucky to have a friend like you. But don't worry, shes not the same naive person anymore. I will have a word with her."

Sudhir Ahluwalia heard a knock on the door and he hung up the phone. He saw the door open a crack and Arohi peeped inside.

"Busy?"

Sudhir smiled and shook his head. Arohi entered the room and walked towards her father. Amrit followed her inside and shut the door.

Sudhir looked surprised as Arohi gestured him to sit on the sofa, next to his wife who sat there with confused expressions. They both looked at each other and then looked at their daughter. Arohi came and stood in front of them.

"Mom... Dad... i want to talk to you both."

They waited patiently for her to continue but there was a roller coaster running in Arohis stomach.

"Uhh... actually i want to tell you that... actually i want to ask you..."

If Sudhir and Amrit Ahluwalia were confused before then they were completely baffled seeing their daughter twist her hands together in nervousness. The last time Sudhir had seen her like this was when she had to tell them that she had scored 1% short of her targeted 95% in her college exams.

"Poocho Arohi..." Her mother urged her gently.

"Umm... Aap dono ko... Arjun kaisa lagta hai?"

Two sets of eyebrows srunched in confusion and faced each other.

"Achha hai" "Samajhdar hai" "Good businessman" "Thoda jyada lamba hai" "Good strategist" "Badon ka aadar karta hai" "Very keen sense of execution" "Apni dadi se bohat pyaar karta hai" "Mature for his age" "US mein rehke bhi apne sanskaar nahi bhulaa" "Joyful and patient"

Arohi looked on from her dad to her mom as they started shooting praises for Arjun. They had never even praised her so much! Feeling a bit irritated she cut them in between.

"Maine Arjun pe thesis likhne ko nahi kaha hai. Sirf pooch aapko voh kaisa lagta hai..."

Sensing something, Sudhir and Amrit looked at each other and exchanged something with a smile. Sudhir looked back at his visibly frustrated daughter.

"Lekin tum kyu pooch rahi ho? Kuch hua hai kya? Have you guys fought again?"

"No... in fact... Arjun... now we are good friends. I can see what you see in him. And... he... he has asked me out on a date. So..."

In her nervousness Arohi completely missed the gleam of joy in her parents eyes.

"Aur tumne kya socha hai?"

"Mein... i don't mind... if you guys are ok!"

"Of course we are ok!" Sudhir and Amrit jumped up in joy. "We love Arjun and think that he is great. We just never thought you both felt this way about each other. In fact we were thinking..."

"Hold on. When i say you guys are ok' i mean that i don't want you to get excited or expect something out of it... atleast not now. We both like each other but everyone knows we are complete opposites. And i really don't know if this relationship will go somewhere. But we want to give it a try. So please don't get your hope up."

Amrits spirit dampened a bit but Sudhir went to his daughter, and held her shoulders.

"I know you are scarred because of what happened with Naveen, and i completely understand. We are just happy that you are willing to go out there and give Arjun a chance. There is no pressure from our side. Whatever you both decide is ok with us. But promise me one thing... the day you feel that Arjun is the one, you'll not hesitate to come and tell me."

Arohi smiled hesitantly. "I wont dad. I just don't know if..."

"Its ok. We understand." Placing a quick kiss on Arohis forehead, Sudhir watched his daughter exit the study. She can say what she wants but her father noticed the bounce in her step. Maybe Naveens news can wait for one more day.

He lifted the phone and dialled a number.

"Rudra... guess what? We have lost the bet. Turns out our wives are smarter than us..."

Sudhir heard his best friend groan on the phone and turned to look at his wife. Silently he reached into his pocket, removed a bundle of notes and placed it in his Amrits outstretched hand.

Next day... Arjuns cabin

Arohi stood shocked as she opened to door. There were papers all over the place, open files on his desk, books and notes on the centre table, the coffee getting cold on the side desk and Natasha was roaming around barking orders on the phone. The moment she saw Arohi, she froze and hung up. Arohi stared at her in suspicion.

"Whom were you talking to?"

"Nobody"

"Where is Arjun?"

"I don't know"

"What!"

"I mean... hes gone to his office... for a meeting."

"Natasha... are you alright?"

"Yes... i am fine."

Arohi ran her eyes over the womans flustered form, She looked as if she had just come back from a wrestling match.

"Uhh... Arohi... im a bit busy. Is there something you wanted?"

"Ya actually... Do you know when is Arjun coming back? Hes not taking my calls."

"Hes not coming back. He said he will directly pick you up for your date tonight. Anything else?"

Arohis eyes widened in surprise. She shook her head and exited the cabin. There were no deadlines now, no meetings, no presentations! Then what was Natasha so busy with. And she knew about the date! Talking to herself, Arohi went back to her cabin.

The day was going painfully slow for her. After their last night encounter, whenever she saw in the mirror, she found herself blushing. Even her parents were giving her loving smiles at the breakfast table. Luckily Sanchit was dumb enough to not notice and ask, otherwise he would have teased her to no end. Anyway he loves his Arjun bhai' more than his own sister. After many days she was having lunch by herself and missed having him around to pull her leg, crack jokes, touch her every chance he got, tease her about how she kissed, and fight with her too. After many days, Arohi Ahluwalia could not concentrate on work and was waiting to leave her office.

Atlast the clock struck 6 pm and she rushed home. Sudhir briefly saw the whirlwind which came in through the main door and whoosed on the staircase towards its room. Exactly 60 minutes later, his daughter came down looking like a princess going to a ball. She gave him a nervous smile and started pacing, looking at her phone. Amrit came from the temple and saw her husband watching tv whereas her daughter was dressed up and walking the length of the room.

She looked at Sudhir and he turned his eyes towards the entrance indicating Arohi was waiting for someone. Suppressing a smile on her lips, she hurried towards her and gave her Prasad. Arohi took it and ate it quickly, and resumed her pacing. Amrit shook her head and silently thanked god for bringing Arohis heart back to life. A horn sounded outside and Arohi jumped.

"Bye mom... dad..."

And the whirlwind was gone.

As soon as she exited the house, Sudhir and Amrit Ahluwalia burst out in laughter. Watching the nervous and jumpy Arohi after a very long time had made them happy.

Arohis smile dropped when she saw Arjuns driver on the driving seat of his SUV. As soon as she sat inside, he gave her an envelope and started the car.

Im sorry i could not come to pick you up... wanted everything to be perfect... please don't be angry...

-arjun

Arohis anger left her body in a jiffy and what was left was nervousness. She had anticipated his reaction when he would first see her but now she will have to wait for that. She didn't even know where he had planned to take her!

And of all the places she had imagined, this one was the last on her mind. She straightened up immediately as the door opened and Arjun greeted her with a wide smile. Scanning her form, he gave her a look of appreciation and Arohi smiled. He put out his hand and she placed it in his, walking inside.

"Welcome... to my humble abode..."

Arohi looked around the lavish, yet simple and clean apartment, that Arjun was referring to as humble'! it seemed like he didnot like too much furniture in his house. The living room was bright with white marble flooring and white furniture. Colours were thrown around in the form of cushions, curtains, carpets and tables. The lighting was low yet bright enough to feel inviting. There was an open dining behind which opened up to a terrace, looking out to the city below.

The place was decorated with fresh flowers and string lights making Arohi feel that she is attending a private party. Wide open pots with floating diyas were placed in almost every room giving it a surreal feel. Strings of fairy lights were suspended from the open doors of the dining room towards the terrace. In small spaces, candles were lit in corners to maintain the cozy atmosphere.

Arjun gave her a quick tour of his penthouse and took her upstairs to show her his library and the study. She was impressed at seeing the number of books that were stacked in the floor to ceiling bookshelf. Coming out of the library, before Arjun could stop her, she entered the room next to it and was completely taken back.

This was by far, the most messiest room in the house. Clothes, open books, files, bags, laptop, ipod and many other things lay scattered around making her eyes go wide. There was a softboard behind his bed full of photographs, of his house in LA, his car, his office, his friends, and many more.

She turned to look at Arjun who smiled sheepishly.

"Dont mind this mess." He quickly tried to pick up a few things and set them straight.

"Arjun... are you a slob?"

"NO! This is my room ok... aise lagna chahiye ki yaha koi rehta hai. And this is the only place where a maid cannot come without my permission... so..."

Arohi bit her lip from laughing out loud and went to the tall windows. He had a private swimming pool which looked over to the terrace below. She then walked over to the softboard and saw some photos as Arjun tried to clear things from her way.

"Are you done inspecting my room? If yes, then lets go down and eat."

Controlling her laugh, she nodded her head and followed him down.

It seemed like today was a surprise day for Arohi. She was stunned to notice that Arjun had driven away all his house staff and was doing everything himself. But she was shocked to see him move in the kitchen and make some last minute preparations. When he started serving the food, she could not help but ask.

"Kisne banaya... ye sab?"

"Kisne matlab? Maine..." He continued serving the minestrone soup and kept it on her dish. Arohis eyes followed his movements and then stared at his face. Her gaze shifted to the Italian dishes laid out on the table. There was minestrone soup with focaccia bread, penne pasta in arabiatta sauce, vegetarian home made pizza and sheet lasagne with minced vegetables.

"Tumse kisne kaha hi..."

"... ki tumhe Italian pasand hai? Danish ne."

Arjun smiled at her and sat down to have his soup. She continued staring at him. Any rich man would have booked a five-star hotel or a resort and taken her out for a lavish date, showered her with fancy things. Or he would have hired a string of professionals to do the best for her. Basically bought everything that money could buy and make his date feel like a princess.

And here this man, had slogged himself to give her an intimate and peaceful date. To top it all, he had even cooked her favourite food for her. Her heart soared up in happiness.

"I hope you like this Arohi. I mean i wanted our first date to be more private. Waise bhi office mein tumhe akele pakadna bohat mushkil hojata hai. So i wanted to spend some quality time together, just the two of us."

Arohi reached across the table and grabbed Arjuns hand. "I love it. Nobody has ever done something like this for me before." Withdrawing her hand she looked at all the food. "I didnot know you can cook."

"I did a lot of cooking when i was out for studies. Eating out everyday was not an option. Plus i find it very de-stressing."

"And i find it very distressing! I don't like cooking so much."

"Thats because you've not cooked with me. I will show you how much creative and fun it is." Arjun winked at her suggestively and Arohi smirked.

"Should we eat? Ya pehle tumhare driver ko khila de? Agar voh zinda raha toh mein bhi kha lungi..."

Arjun narrowed his eyes and Arohi looked at him mischeiviously.

They both smiled and started eating. Arjun poured them a glass of wine each and Arohis eyebrows jumped up.

"Dont worry... only one glass. Because if you get drunk and try to dance on this table then it will break!"

Arohi threw her napkin at him for teasing her. The next one hour went in easy camaraderie. They almost felt like they were catching up with an old friend. It turned out that they both remembered a lot about each other when they were children. Some memories were not so clear, but they were there. Arjun finished the meal with gelato ice cream which he assured, was not made by him.

After clearing the table, he grabbed her hand and took her out of the French windows on the terrace. There were a lot of flowering pots arranged in corners with a swing at one end. There was a small campfire made in the middle of the terrace. In one offset, there was nice bed with thick blankets on top.

"Sometimes i like to sleep watching the stars."

Arjun explained as Arohi threaded her fingers through his and sat on the swing. She placed her head on his shoulders and Arjun was busy in observing their entwined hands.

"Arjun..." Arohi spoke softly.

"Hmm..."

"Bohat ajeeb lagraha hai..."

Arjun turned his head to look at her. "Ajeeb matlab?"

"Matlab hum dono saath hain, aur itni shaanti hai. Hum jab bhi saath rehte hai tab ya toh jhagadte hai ya phir..." Arohi caught herself before she mentioned them making out.

"So what do you suggest? Should i fight with you... or kiss you?"

Arohi gasped and tried to move away but Arjun tightened his grip on her hand and pulled her closer. With their noses almost touching each other, Arjun leaned down slowly targeting her lips. Arohi pushed him away and got up with a start. Arjun walked behind her and held her from behind. He kissed her ear and Arohi smiled.

"Arohi... jaldi se kuch suggest karo... warna mein unn do options mese ek choose kar lunga!"

Arohi could make out him laughing against her ear and she pulled him towards the bed.

"Chalo taarein dekhte hain."

"What! No... i prefer the kissing option."

"Arjun! You said you liked watching the stars right? So lets do that... its fun."

"Whats fun in that?"

Arjun questioned her even as he saw her lie down on the bed and he lay down next to her. Tucking her head in the crook of his arm, he hugged her waist with the other arm and spooned her.

"Maine college mein astronomy ka basic course kiya tha. Just for fun."

Arjun grabbed her closer and kissed her hair. "Achha? Kya seekha tumne batao..."

Arohi pointed overhead towards the brightest spot in the sky. "Voh haina waha... sabse bright... thats the pole star."

"Achha?" Arjun stroked the baby soft skin of her arms with his fingers.

Arohi ignored the sensations. "Aur voh... voh group of stars dikh rahe hain? Shaped like a kite and its tail? Voh saptarashi hain... the great bear and seven stars."

"Uhuh..." Arjun started at Arohis face and slowly pushed a tendril off her cheeks that the wind blew.

Arohi gulped. "You can see that tiny dot... little red in colour? I think thats mercury. Badal nahi hain issliye dikh raha hai..."

"Thats great..." Arjun smelled her hair and dropped a kiss on it.

"Arjun!" Arohi shrieked and Arjun jerked back looking at her face, but she was still looking at the sky, smiling excitedly and pointing towards something. "Voh dekho... toot ta taara..."

Arjun looked just in time to see a flash of light dash across the sky.

"Jaldi... kuch maango!" Arjun looked at Arohi and she closed her eyes to make a wish. He kept staring at her as her lips moved fervently wishing all her near and dear ones well and god knows what more. The soft moving pink lips arrested Arjuns attention and he kept looking at them. After a minute or so, Arohi opened her eyes and saw Arjun staring down at her intently. She smiled at him.

"Tumne wish kiya?"

Arjun nodded his head slightly.

"Good. It will definitely come true."

"Only time will tell..."

Arjuns tone and his husky voice made Arohi realise that he was staring very intently... at her lips. Arohi breathing deepened and Arjun could feel her chest moving up and down. Very slowly he bend down and placed his lips on hers. Arohi closed her eyes and felt that she imagined the contact. Unlike everytime, Arjun didnot kiss her fervently or passionately. He just brushed his lips against hers, feeling the softness, revelling in the texture, just enjoying the contact. Somehow Arohi found this more torturous.

A couple of minutes later, Arohi felt the warmth move away and she opened her eyes. Arjun was still staring down at her, but his eyes told her that he was thinking something. His jawbone tightened and he gulped. Arohi didn't move, wanting him to have his wish.

"Arohi..." Her name from his mouth after a painful silence, felt like the cool breeze.

"Hmm..."

"Dance with me..."

It was a statement, not a question. Not waiting for her to respond, Arjun got up and grabbed the remote off the bedside table. With the click of a button, the music system came to life and soft melody filled the silence in the terrace. Arjun held out his hand to her and she got up from the bed, straight into his arms.

As they started dancing, the entire journey of hate transforming into love flashed in front of Arohis eyes. Funnily, she didnot remember their fights so well, but every kiss, every look, every touch, including the last night encounter in her bedroom, was now etched deeply in her soul.
