Chapter 5
To Reason with a Superstar
"I am a man more sinned against than sinning"
William Shakespeare, King Lear
It had been just a little over a day. For any bystander it would seem as nothing of actual significance has happened. He was dressed in simple comfortable clothes, wearing a jet black track pants clad with a white shirt. RK sipped his coffee as he scrolled through emails. He was sitting in his study room; the walls were almost completely concealed by the various glossy images of RKs framed movie posters. He scanned carelessly through the work emails, not paying much heed to the multiple emails from magazine heads confirming his photo shoots and interviews. He didn't bother with the hassle of rescheduling; his manager Bittoji would handle that. He finally scoured to the top of the page and read the title of the email, "Confirmation of Production House meeting in 2 days." Clicking on the email RK read through the email.
The is the notice of confirmation of a meeting that is set for Friday, September 5, 2013 at 10 am at Mahatma Studios. The meeting has been called by Bodega Productions to meet in association with Creative Writers, Director, the assistant directors, Mr. Rishabh Kundra, Ms. Neha Singhania, Ms. Dipali Bhatia, and Mr. Rahul Malhotra. This will be a private meeting. Mr. Rishabh Kundra, Ms. Neha Singhania, Ms. Dipali Bhatia, and Mr. Rahul Malhotra may wish to bring in representation. No other personnel will be allowed.
At first he was unsure whether to be pleased that finally some action was being taken towards compromise or pissed off that it took them nearly 3 months of constant bickering to finally reach this point.
He got up from his chair and walked to the window that overlooked the front of his home. There was a lightly paved 2 car driveways that lead into the street; a lawn lay next to the driveway, the luscious green grass was still reflected with the residue of the morning dew. He rested by the ebony window. Bittoji would be here in a couple of hours. The meeting was set for two days from now. A decision will have to be made.
It was near late morning as Madhu and Twix were making their way back in from their morning route. Usually Madhu resided in the comfort of her home or the beach that played as her backyard. Her early morning walks with Twix was a nice visual treat as they both arose early in the mornings and walked into their little quaint town. The neighborhood that both RK and Madhu lived in was a gated community built on an incline of the land that mocked as tiny hills. Past the gate and across the street was a small white church. Right behind the church, was a walking park for walkers, joggers, bicyclists, and their pets. Regularly the park was full of life as the retired men lay in the grass and played cards. Madhu, on more than one occasion has rubbed her nose with these master card players and came out victorious, her earning her the name of "Pate de Rani". The duo would leave the home at precisely at 7:50, to make it time to hear the 8 am church bells that rung loudly from the bronze bell that hung high overhead. Their nice brisk walk consisted of going around the church, through the shops, the two restaurants that interlaced the downtown square, and finally making it back around to the park. Breakfast was at the local frozen yogurt shop that neighbored the park and the church, which was kind enough to carry dog biscuits for Twix.
It was almost 10:30 AM as Madhu was walking back to her home. It was later than she usually arrived back but she didn't intend to held up at the park for so long but the urge to surface the "Pate de Rani" emerged as group of retiree friends kept calling her, how could she refuse? She walked past the gate, almost up the hill her home. Tired of chasing the numerous squirrels that teased him high on topic the tree branches, an exhausted Twix tried his best to match the pace of his owner. Arriving upon her home, Madhu turned into her own driveway. By the time she reached on the front door, Madhu noticed a black Mercedes Benz driving up the street, turning in to park in her neighbor's driveway, in RKs driveway. She stopped and took a look, not realizing her one look quickly became a stare. She started walking towards the vehicle, her curiosity was peaking. She stopped as she felt a tug on Twix's leash. Turning around she noticed her tired out pup starting his power nap early, resting his head on the front door mat. Madhu pulled on the leash a little, attempting to wake her tired out dog but was met only with Twix lifting his head long enough to throw her a dirty look. "Oh alright fine." Madhu said whispering as she walked back to open her front door. Twix gladly entered without second thoughts whilst Madhu was left on the front door to think over hers. She turned back out and noticed a man rather on the short side stepping out. "Maybe it wouldn't hurt to make one more round just around the block by myself" Madhu said reasoning with herself.
Bittoji stepped out of the car, instructing the driver to keep an eye out for anything remotely suspicious. A bit short, clean shave and dressed in jeans and a simple T-shirt, Bittoji walked up the couple brick steps leading to the door. He carried a briefcase in one hand and held a couple of cell phones in the other. Bittoji was RK's manager and confidant. After nearly 5 years of service to RK, the two were also close friends. He followed and listened to RK and had never faltered at fulfilling any of RKs demands, whether how crazy or lunatic. Their bond was strange, almost close as brothers yet there was always the sense of professionalism that both have always been aware of. As Bittoji walked up to the front of the house and rang the doorbell. He felt uncomfortable, as if he was being watched. He looked around and surveyed the area. The possibility of a reporter or the paparazzi following him was pestering him. He knew what this house meant to RK, probably understood it better than RK's own mother. It was his getaway from his professional issues and his never ending personal problems. The thought of exposing RK's safe haven was too much of a reality to dismiss to easily.
The front door opened and RK welcomed him with an easy hug before Bittoji entered the house. RK had the back porch door open, the smell of the sea air mixed with the scents of coffee beans.
"How are you doing chief?" Bittoji said setting his briefcase on the kitchen counter.
"I am fine Bittoji. How are you? How is she?" RK asked calmly refilling his mug with freshly brewed coffee.
"SHE is fine" Bittoji replied with obvious emphasis as he sat down on of the bar stools by the island in the middle of the kitchen. The island and the counters were fitted with a white granite tops. "She wants to make sure you are okay."
"Come off it now. There is just about anything. I rather talk about. News, politics, sports, music, hell even decaying snails!" RK sniped; there was a twinge of irritation in his voice. "But I am not an idiot who just wastes time. I got the email of the meeting this morning and I am not going." RK proclaimed as he turned to face Bittoji, "you are going in my place."
"But chief I can't go. You were called along with the other leads."
"It looks like you have forgotten how to read Bittoji. It stated that I can send representation. And I will." RK walked over to the open porch door, "I am not leaving this place yet. And I don't want to see those stupid fools that call themselves professionals either."
"Chief that's fine but I still think it's best if you went. The biggest issue is dates for shooting I believe. It shouldn't be too much of a hassle."
"Bittoji its it just the issue of dates but stopping shoots all together because they can't afford to pay for the heavy expenses of all the lavish sets they demanded to be constructed. On top of that that bloody pathetic excuse for a production company was about to cut my final payment by 20%!" RK roared.
Turning to face Bittoji, RK continued his rant, "Calling them stupid fools is an understatement. They lied to us, and are still trying to call the shots as if they are in a position of control! I am not stepping in the same room as those leeches till an agreement is met AND I receive my full payment. And this is what you will say in the meeting. There is no backing down "RK said walking closer to him" any negations at all. Throw that damn word out of your dictionary. You will not succumb to them. Understood?"
"P-Perfectly chief" Bittoji let out a sign of relief as RK backed away, the intimidating look that consumed RK's eyes was enough to frighten even the toughest of alpha males. "But chief it doesn't matter what the outcome of the meeting will be, you will still have to return by Monday latest. The photo shoots I can postpone, the interviews can be done by phone but you need to come in to do so post production scene dubbing for your last movie. It's set to release in about a month and there is also the rest of the film promotion to handle."
RK left the kitchen area and walked into the living room, sitting down on a chocolate brown suede couch. Placing is feet up he was in some odd way glad there was work to do when he got back, to keep him occupied. This mess up with the production house was the least of his worries. Bittoji followed right behind him.
"Chief you have to remember your commitment to your work and forget commitment chief! You love doing this, you love acting and being a celebrity. There are ways ups and downs but you shouldn't let this interfere with what you love to do."
"Nice pep talk" RK responded back sarcastically. "Anything else to lecture me about or have you fulfilled your appetite for the day?"
"I am good Chief. I am good." Bittoji responded with a broad smile. "Okay chief I have to get going. There are a couple of locations I need to check before heading back to Mumbai."
"Fine." "Uhh any messages chief? Any you would like me to deliver?" Bittoji asked with a teasing smile.
"Get lost." RK barked. Bittoji chuckled as he headed back to the kitchen. "Oh I almost forgot" Bittoji opened the briefcase and took out a book. Handing it to RK, he said, "here is the book you asked for and I got to say it's a far stretch from what you usually like to read." Bittoji said closing the briefcase.
"Sometimes Bittoji it's good to venture out of our comfort zones, you know expand your horizons and all." RK said turning the book over to its backside. There was a picture of a young woman, of Madhu, with a short description of her.
Madhubala, 25 years old resides in a small seafront town off the coast of Maharashtra, India either 2 year old black labor for Twix. Miss.
