Asad walked into his room and shut the door. What did he just do? In love with Zoya Farooqui? No he wasn't in . . . wait no . . . he couldn't do it. He was in love. First step is acceptance. His mind flashed back to her, almost knocking her down with his car . . . twice, her rudeness, seeing her crying in the Dargah. He had been mesmerized by her beauty. Then he remembered her landing on him when she busted in his room screaming 'chor,' rescuing her from Akram and every moment from Mangalpur. It always came back to that. He loved her. "I love her." He said out loud and to himself.
"Who do you love Mr. Khan?" Asad looked up startled at Zoya Farooqui. It was if he'd conjured her here just by thinking of her. Again barging into his room without knocking.
"Ms. Farooqui, how many times have I told you to knock before entering my room?" He said trying to steer away from what she'd asked. "I did knock Mr. Khan."She said softly, her eyes wide as she defended herself. "You just seemed miles away, you probably didn't hear me." She shrugged.
"Can I help you with something?" He asked clearing his throat and standing up. He stuffed his hands into the pockets of his trousers, his fingers clenching and unclenching in tension of her presence.
With this new revelation there was now tension and awkwardness, at least from his side because he was still clueless as to what she might or might not feel. He was 100% sure though that there was something there though even if only an inkling.
"I . . .uh . . . well Mr. Khan, I wanted to talk about . . ." she passed a hand through her hair even though it was neat, a nervous gesture he noticed she did a lot. "I was wondering if . . . well . . . if we could talk about what almost happened outside, just now." Her words were rushed at the end as if she just wanted to get them out and be done with it.
Asad swallowed hard. He was in no way ready to answer any questions about what he'd almost done outside. What would have surely happened if they hadn't been interrupted. Was she still leaving? What could he do to stop her now if she was determined to go? No matter how he felt, he didn't have the right.
"Ms. Farooqui, now is not the time to discuss such things." He said, eyes boring a hole into the floor. Anything to get her to drop the topic. "I have very important work to finish and I cannot speak about this now." He turned away rolling his eyes at his stupid excuse.
"Right . . . well we'll talk later I guess." She said softly and he turned around immediately. "Later? As in you're staying?" He asked hoping deeply that she had changed her mind.
"Ah, yes. But it's only for a week more. Aapi and Jeeju have gone to visit a sick relative and would be gone for a week so they asked me to postpone my flight for this time." She brushed her hair back again. "They didn't want me to return to an empty house." She tried to smile but he saw the sadness in her face and wondered if his face looked the same.
"Oh a week." He said his voice sounding glum to his own ears. "Is that a problem, Mr. Khan? I . . . um . . . can find alternative accommodation for that time."
"No!" He said loudly and she flinched. "I mean . . ."He modulated his voice to what he hoped was calm and reasonable. "You are more than welcome to stay here Ms. Farooqui . . . as long as you want."
"You're acting weird." She said shocking him at her bluntness. Though he shouldn't have been surprised. This was Zoya Farooqui after all.
"Ms. Farooqui . . . I have work to do." He said trying to get her out before he did something stupid like blurt out "I love you Zoya."
"What did you say?" Zoya looked at him with a curious look on her face. Ya Allah, did he just say that out loud. Oh no! He couldn't be that stupid. Maybe she didn't hear.
"Say what?" He asked shrugging a shoulder trying to look unaffected,
"Guess I was imagining things." She said, eyebrows scrunched together in confusion. She shook her head turning away to go. She opened the door but turned at the last second. "Mr. Khan?"
"Hmm?" He asked messing around with some papers on his side-table. "You never told me who you loved." Her demeanor was calm, unaffected but her eyes couldn't hide her curiosity. She turned away before he could say a word and shut the door behind her,
Asad sat down and put his face in his hands, "How do I tell you Zoya . . . that you're the one I love." He sighed and scrubbed a hand over his face. "How do I tell you that you've come into my life and given me feelings that I never thought possible? That I've fallen in love with the person I never envisioned but can't stop thinking about." He sighed heavily. "How do I tell you all this when you might not feel the same?"
