We heard that you got married recently...
Yes, it's true. I don't know how you guys got wind of it. It was supposed to be a hush-hush affair. But since you got to know of it, let me tell you that I got married a month back. It was simple nikaah attended by close friends that was solemnised in Mumbai.
Any reason for keeping it under wraps?
Actually, my husband is having a concert in Mumbai on the 23rd. We didn't want the news to come out before that. I didn't want the whole focus to shift to my marriage. His concert is more important to me. My husband, Ustad Raza Ali Khan is one of India's greatest singers. He is the son of Ustad Munnawar Ali Khan and the great-grandson of the legendary classical vocalist, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.
How long have you known each other?
Oh, I have known him for ages. In fact, he was my first love. But after my first marriage broke up, I didn't want to marry again, because my kids were very small. My logic was that if I got married again, my attention might get diverted. Now, since my children have grown up, I decided to take the plunge again.
What was the reaction of your son, Shahid Kapoor?
He was very cool about it. In fact, I was reluctant to get married at this age. I was like, 'What will people think?', but it was Shahid who prompted me. He told me, 'Mom, since you love him, you should get married again.'
You acted in a couple of films, but we don't get to see you on-screen these days...
More than acting, I was known for my dancing. Not many of today's generation know that I'm a trained classical dancer (Kathak). I have earned critical acclaim for my dance.
What about Shahid's marriage?
Not now. He's too young for it. He has just started his career. Give him some time for all this. He has a
great career ahead!
