'Even prostitutes have more ideals than most TV actors!

...says Harsh Chhaya, who seems disillusioned with the way television industry works

HARSHADA REGE

Harsh Chhaya needs no introduction. Right from Hasratein to Astitva, he has delivered many intense performances. But the actor has been making few appearances on the small screen. When asked about the reason behind this, Harsh says, "The TV scenario is the worst possible. There is huge market for such serials, but it's pathetically dishonest. Even a prostitute has better ideals than most TV actors these days. We have become worse than them. We have 28 year olds playing father and grand father to 23 year olds." The actor admits that he too has been offered such roles. "I have been able to keep away from them. But how long I'll be able to do so, is something I can't say for sure. The problem is that being choosy means being unemployed these days," he laughs. The actor feels that there are very few male lead characters that stand out. "One has to work really hard on the characters. The ones that one notices are few and far between. Every year, atleast for two months I am at home without any work," he says. But now Ajai Sinha and Harsh Chhaya who have worked together in Hasratein, Justjoo as well as Astitva have come together to work in SaharaOne's Ghar Ek Sapna. Harsh says, "It so happens that two energies get together and something outstanding is created. Sinha is a good story teller. Hopefully things will work out this time too." But it so happens many a times that a serial seems different when it begins but the track is changed to hike TRPs. Harsh acknowledges this and says, "That would depend on how logical the track is. Even when Astitva took a 20 year leap, I wasn't comfortable with it and hence I opted out." But isn't it easier said than done? Should actors like him try and make a difference by making serials that they believe in? "Recently, a friend of mine wanted to make a serial that appealed to him. But he was asked to make something that he would hate, so that it may
audiences," he says. Besides acting in the Hindi play Kachche Lamhe, Harsh has also been busy with movies. "I have completed shooting for Rajat Kapoor's Mithya, Breaking News
and a Marathi film by Bipin Nadkarni. Besides that I have also signed Pradeep Sarkar's next movie.
So is the actor all set to say goodbye to TV? "Off late, the divide between television and films is fading thanks to Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Karan Johar. Even if they are doing non-fiction on TV. Also, quitting is a personal choice, it's sad watching TV actors making announcements, looking down upon TV when in the first place they are what they are because of TV. Actors who make such statements only to come back later. Hard, honest work is nothing to be ashamed of even if it's the 'idiot box'. The so called 'idiot box is supporting that's worth crores and more," he says.
