Supernatural Spinoff: In the Works!

The producers of Supernatural are working on a spinoff, it was revealed today at Comic-Con.

Executive producer Bob Singer said during the annual event in San Diego that a backdoor pilot is being developed for the 20th episode of Supernatural Season 9, which kicks off this fall.

Reportedly, the show will introduce a new character who will anchor the proposed spinoff.

Details are slim, but the new series will have "a more urban feel" than Supernatural.

It's a formula that the network has also used with The Originals and The Vampire Diaries.

With existing cast members from TVD and some new faces, the CW successfully launched a "backdoor pilot" of The Originals during a late-season episode of The Vampire Diaries in April.

Supernatural, a staple of the network since 2005, returns Tuesday, October 15.

'Supernatural' Season 9 Spoilers: Episode 20 to Introduce Spin-off, Possible Men of Letters Theme?

The world of Supernatural will be getting a new addition in the coming year.

While the CW show made the rounds at Comic-Con last weekend, executive producer Robert Singer reportedly stated that a spin-off is in the works for the sci-fi drama, according to TV Line.

"We're doing a spin-off later in the year; I think it should be in episode 20, so there may be a new incarnation of [Supernatural]," Singer said, according to Clique Clack.

While it appears that episode 20 will serve as a backdoor pilot for the new production, co-executive producer Jeremy Carver warns that the new series is not set in stone.

"It may be a teeny bit premature to talk about it," Carver told Clique Clack during a press session at Comic-Con.

Although characters come and go on the program fairly regularly, the new show is set to feature someone viewers have not seen before. Nor will the show follow the same wayward, on the road settings as Supernatural.

"The [Winchester] boys are in that story but it's actually a whole new cast of characters and a little more urban setting than the back roads of America that we have been doing for eight years," Singer stated.

Current Supernatural writer Andrew Dabb is penning the project but actual plot details are essentially non-existent. While the Supernatural universe is fairly extensive, one of the more prominent rumors points to the possibility of a Men of Letters theme for the impending show.

'Supernatural' season 9 spoilers: First details on spin-off show revealed

We've been waiting for some time to finally uncover some early details on the "Supernatural" spin-off show, and we at least know one detail set in stone already: The setting. To think, we really are getting pretty far away from the world of Sam and Dean Winchester driving around in a muscle car in the middle of nowhere.

Instead, we're heading to the Windy City! It was confirmed today by The CW that this highly-promoted spin-off series is going to be set in Chicago, and thus feature all new adventures in the world of humans and monsters.

What remains a mystery for now is save for the one new character that has been confirmed, will someone from the existing "Supernatural" universe be stopping by? It really makes sense that someone would, given that you want to launch a new show in as successful of a manner as possible. Having Misha Collins, for example, move Castiel to Chicago would provide an instant audience for the show, while also giving him a more substantial role and allow for a premise that could bring in people who have never ever seen "Supernatural" before.

This spin-off, regardless of who is in it or what the story is about, will air as a backdoor pilot as a part of the spring season. Basically, it's just like what The CW did with "The Originals," except with a flagship show that has been around just as long, and with fans that may be the most passionate out of any show on TV.
