HER BIDAAI
She walked out of the house back straight,chin up, even as tears rolled down her cheeks and her face crumpled up in grief. She had entered this house as a helpless dependent and she would leave as a strong, independent woman. She owed it to these people, people who had nurtured her, cared for her , loved her that much
Memories assaulted her with each step. They poured in making the knot in her chest grow and her body shudder with the force of her tears. For shame! She was nothing more than a charity case, a burden and she had the nerve to imagine herself as a part of this family?
But then when had they not treated her as family? Perhaps if they hadn't this separation could have been easier . But they had treated her as part of their family, they had looked after her like one of their own and she had been treated like a daughter by Dadisa, Taisa and even Kakisa to some extent. Everywhere she looked now she could only see images of the happy times spent with them- playing with Nandu, laughing with Taisa, joining Masa in making fun of poor Makhan, helping Kakisa in the kitchen, talking with Kakosa, listening to Doctorsa...no she would not think of him. She would hold every other person and the memories of time spent with them like a precious jewel in her heart forever but from this moment she would try her best to forget that a person like Doctorsa had even existed and that she had fallen in love with him. Because if she couldn't forget him, then the pain could end up killing her
She had reached the door. . For a moment her feet stilled. It felt as if a large block of stone had been placed over her chest and she was slowly being crushed to death. The world around her seemed to spin and turned blurry through her tears. Where would she go? How would she survive alone? But most importantly how could she survive separated from this family, her family, her precious family? How would she survive not knowing if they are well or happy or if Masa was taking her medicines on time or whether Taisa's baby is a girl or a boy...so many things!
The weakness was only for a minute. Ratan Singh's face flashed into her mind as he had held the sword against Nandu's neck. She didn't hesitate anymore . 2 more steps and she was out of the door walking as fast as possible, to leave this beloved house to which she had brought danger and misery
Ganga had cried at her first bidai in that sham of a marriage. Then the tears had solely been due to fear. Today as she walked away from the first real home she had known since her parents did , she cried her heart out, understanding fully what a Bidaai was
