Chapter 13

Its 4.30AM. Garima woke up and came out of her room to get some water from the kitchen. She filled the water bottle and on her way to her room she noticed someone lying on the floor in the living room. She couldnt figure out who that is as the room is dark. She turned on the lights to find Khushi in unconscious state on the floor.

She hurriedly rushed to her and tried to wake her up but she didnt. She panicked and cried for Shashi aloud.

Shashi rushed to the scene and he immediately checked her pulse. She is breathing. He asked Garima to call the doctor and Shashi carried Khushi to the car and drove her to the emergency.

Khushi, what have you done to yourself? Garima cried resting Khushi's head on her lap in the back seat.

Shashi trembled in fear and was worried if his daughter had done anything stupid to herself.

Mr. Gupta, Do you know what she ate in last 24 hrs?.

Shashi looked at Garima questioningly.

Doctor, She was fasting all day as it was her marriage. As far as I know she didnt eat anything even later. Garima spoke apologetically as they didnt realize it last night after all that happened.

That explains, She is physically very weak and stressed which is why she lost her consciousness. We are giving her fluids. She should be fine soon. But nothing to worry. I will check on her in an hour. You can take her home in the evening. Doctor handed over the doctor note.

Thank You Doctor. Shashi thanked and sat next to Khushi.

He took her hand in his and sobbed softly. Bitiya?

Garima couldnt see her husband in such vulnerable state. This is the third time Shashi cried in his life after their marriage; one when Khushi was born, second when Aran died and third today seeing his daughter's life broken into pieces.

Shashi, What do we do now?

I dont know Garima. Everything happened so fast that I am not able to understand anything. Where should I start? How should I fix everything?

Its all because of me. I should have died that night. You wouldn't have seen this day to keep up your promise to Aran bhaiyya. Garima cried collapsing at his feet.

Shashi and Garima sat outside in complete silence, in their own thoughts.

Garima, did you notice something yesterday. I clearly understood what they said about their reasons to break this marriage but their actions are not making any sense.

If Khushi decided to leave with NK. Why didnt she leave? And what was she doing on the road and why does she have to call us, if she really wanted to deceive us? And secondly, if Arnav is only interested in property, what does he wanna speak to Khushi on our way out. Something is not adding up. He thought rubbing his forehead with his fingers.

You are right. Something to think about. And why did she ask you to take her to Arnav, if she wanted to break their marriage?

Thats my point. I am not able to understand. We have to talk to Khushi once we go home. I feel there is more to the story.

Hope Arnav is Ok. I am sure he must be one nervous wreck by now. Payal spoke to Aakash expressing her concern. Apparently, Payal and Akash didnt know that Arnav was not with Khushi as Garima didnt reveal anything but Khushi's ill-health.

Did you speak to him?

No. I just spoke to Aunty. I am sure he will not pick up the phone. Its better we talk to him directly. Moreover, he must be by her bed side. So I didnt wanna bother him.

Soon they reached the hospital.

Payal and Akash paid a visit but were confused as to why Arnav is not there.

Akash was about to ask about Arnav to Khushi parents but Payal stopped him. Because Payal sensed something is wrong. Garima doesnt seem to stop crying and Shashi face expressed nothing but his inner torment.

She dragged Akaash to the side and called Arnav.

Arnav didnt pick up the call.

She tried 3 more times and left a voicemail.

It was around 3AM when Arnav returned home last night. He hit the bed straight but he couldnt sleep. He then settled himself by the pool side on the lounge chair and buried himself in his laptop. He did not sleep the entire night and he started feeling his lids getting heavier by now. He decided to take shower and head to office. His only mission going forward is to involve himself in so much work that he will not have to time to think about Khushi. He got all dressed. He took his wallet and on his way out he checked the missed calls from Payal. He left the house without having breakfast, ignoring kaka's call. He took the wheel and hit the road to his office. He punched numbers to dial the voicemail and heard Payal's voice message.

Arnav, where are you? Khushi is in the hospital. What's going between you guys? Why are you not here? Pick up the phone idiot. I am worried about you.

Arnav stopped the car, pressing the brakes hard making screeching noise. Khushi? Hospital? He muttered under his breath worriedly and dialed Payal's number.

Fatty, What happened to Khushi? Where is she now?

You tell me, Where is Khushi? I thought she is supposed to be with you after marriage.

Fatty, not now. Just tell me where she is? and how is she?

Relax. She is fine now.

Which hospital?

Payal gave him the details of the hospital and the room number. He pressed the accelerator and drove recklessly at high speed. He was assured that Khushi is fine but still his mind started wavering worriedly. He will not be at peace until he personally sees her and confirms it by himself.

Down the hallway, last room on your left Sir. Front desk lady directed Arnav to Khushi's room.

Sir, one sec. Are you visiting?

She is my wife.

Oh then you are fine. We have to take visi..Before she could complete, he ran towards her room in lightning speed.

Shashi from far noticed Arnav coming running to the room. He dragged Garima to the side and they both hid behind the pillar.

Shashi, what are you doing?

My doubt is becoming true.

Shhh..dont shout. Look there and see yourself who is here to see Khushi.

Garima turned her head and noticed Arnav approaching fast.

Fatty, Khushi? Arnav asked breathing hard as he is out of breath.

Relax Arnav. She is ok now. She is sleeping.

Arnav entered the room and noticed her sleeping. Her very shining eyes looked tired. Her lids are puffed up. Her usual glow is missing and she looked extremely pale as if blood is replaced by water in her body. But she is sleeping peacefully breathing relaxed.

Shashi and Garima observed this from outside through the window.

Arnav noticed Khushi's right hand slightly falling off the bed. He raised his hand to fix hers but stopped midway. He trailed his fingers in the air as if he is touching her palm. His eyes welled up looking at her sleeping almost like lifeless.

He turned around to leave but as he was about to open the door to exit, he realized something interesting in her appearance. He turned around to take a look at her. He observed her from head to toe.

He noticed that She is still wearing his engagement ring, toe rings, mangalsutra and sindoor. And most importantly, she is still in her bridal lehenga. He looked at her perplexed. And he exited immediately as he started losing himself again with so many unanswered questions.

Shashi and Garima observed all these from behind the pillar.

Arnav walked to Payal and asked, Where is aunty uncle?

I think they went to see doctor.

What happened to her?

Aunty said she kept fast entire day and she didnt eat dinner even after wedding. So she eventually passed out.

Fast? Why?

Dont you know that brides fast on the marriage day.

And Khushi kept fast for me?

Yes.

It didnt make any sense to him. Whats wrong with you Khushi? You dont want marriage with me but you want to follow all rituals. You wanted to leave with NK but ended up with your parents again. Whats going on? He was so lost in his inner turmoil.

I will meet the doctor and come. Arnav turned to leave but was stopped by Akash.

Arnie, whats going on? Why is Khushi with her parents and not with you? Akash questioned him.

Talk to you later? I am asking you something important about your life and you are just royally ignoring it. What happened between you and Khushi that she ended up here?

No Arnie, you listen to me. There are people around you who care for you. They wanna listen to you and share your pain. If you keep running away from people like this without sharing your pain, one day there will not be anyone in your life. There will not be Payal, there will not be Akash and most importantly not even Khushi. You will stay like this all alone all your life.

Arnie? Akash kept calling while Arnav left the place furiously.

Akash, why do you have to be so blunt. Payal asked worriedly looking at Arnav leaving the place.

Shashi and Garima noticed everything from behind the pillar.

Ever since Arnav came from the hospital, his anger riled up beyond its threshold level. He looked perturbed, flustered and mostly irritated. For last 2 hours he has been talking in fact yelling non stop and his unfortunate victim of the day is Aman Mathur, Arnav's Executive Assistant.

Aman remained silent all through the bashing session, consoling himself that its just one of those days. Aman is very laid back, smart and cool person. He never lets Arnav's temper affect his responsibilities or performance, which is why Arnav didnt fire him yet.

Why the hell are these Mittal tenders still sitting on my desk? Arnav yelled at Aman throwing the files on the floor.

Aman had seen Arnav's temper and tantrums before but today it seemed to be blown out of proportion. He never shivered infront of him but today Aman almost peed in his pants.

I am asking you something. Have you gone deaf? Arnav yelled at Aman again.

Sir, those papers pending signatures from our executive designer.

Arnav looked at Aman furiously for brief period and yelled again,

Do I have to ask another question for you to explain the reason?

Yes Sir...I mean No Sir. She took 2 weeks vacation for her marriage. She asked not to pass anything until she returns.

Just because she is celebrating good-for-nothing freaking marriage, I cant shut my company until she comes. I want her to report to me first thing in the morning else bring the papers to fire her.

Arnav leaned back against his chair and closed his eyes to find some peace of mind. Khushi lying on the hospital bed flashed behind his closed eyes. Then suddenly he remembered about NK.

He dialed Aman's number.

Aman, I need information on person named NK. He is software professional in Mumbai.

Sure Sir. Any other details that would help me expedite the process?

Its been 5 hours since he had seen Khushi. He paced across his room restlessly unable to find about her present condition. He skipped his breakfast, lunch. In fact he didnt eat anything since yesterday afternoon. He cancelled all his meetings and shut himself in his cabin, pacing constantly on his feet.

Unable to bear his angst, he called Payal to find out about Khushi.

Hey Fatty..

Hey Arnie, whats up? how are you? Payal spoke as if everything is normal between them.

Nothing much. Just called to say Hi.

Achaan, ok... HI then. Payal and Akash are still at the hospital with Shashi. And she giggled mutely and gave high five to Shashi.

After Arnav left, Shashi explained what happened to Payal and Akash and he asked them to help him bring the couple together. To which Payal and Akash happily agreed to play along as Shashi instructed. Shashi asked them not to talk anything about Khushi until Arnav asks himself. Payal is doing just that and they are having ball at the other end teasing Arnav.

Where is Akash?

Akash is in toilet.

Why? Arnav thinking all about Khushi, asked silly question absentmindedly.

Payal put her phone on speaker so that Shashi, Akash and Garima will listen.

Khushi is fine. She woke up just a while ago.

Did she eat anything?

Yeah she had something very light.

He didnt say anything. He remained silent. He wanted to know more about her well being but he just didnt know what else to ask.

Then Shashi whispered something and asked Payal to say that to Arnav.

Arnie, she is fine. You go and grab something for lunch. Warna, you will not have energy to think about Khushi.

I will talk to you later Fatty. He just ignored what she said.

Ek aur baat, she is getting discharged in the evening. She is absolutely fine.
