He is television's new bad guy. Avinesh Rekhi, the guy who hails from Punjab is now making the viewers sit up and notice him as the man (read: Sultan) who is causing turbulence in the life of Superstar RK and Madhubala in his current daily soap 'Madhubala... Ek Ishq Ek Junoon'. Interestingly, even in his debut show, 'Chhal — Sheh Aur Maat', Avinesh played a baddie. Doesn't he fear of being typecast? "Not at all. Both my roles of Sultan and Kabir (in 'Chhal'...) carried different essence. My role in 'Chhal', went from bad to good character. And in 'Madhubala'..., I'm playing a good-hearted person who turns a gangster because of odd situations."
His debut show went off air on an abrupt note, did that disturb him? "I was nervous when the show was pulled off air suddenly. I really didn't know where to head next. It was almost shocking because people were appreciating the show as it had an out of the box story line."
It has been a tough struggle for Avinesh to chase his dream of becoming an actor. He gave many auditions and screen tests for over two years before he bagged his first role. How has life changed recently? "My life has changed for good. It is more comfortable, people recognise me and it feels great to be known for your work. After all this is what I was looking for," says Avinesh.
As Sultan, he has grabbed attention from the viewers. How does he look at this new found fame? "With one or two shows, you can't say oh-I-have-arrived now. There's too much of competition in showbiz, and one has to keep working hard all the time. And not just that, it is important to be visible on small screen otherwise all your past credits go in vain," says Avinesh. He adds on, "Till date, I've not allowed myself to think that people have accepted me; because it won't take much time for audiences to reject me if I stop performing well."
And what lies next? "I want to try my luck in films. And the good part is that as I am working in daily soaps, I am getting a chance to polish my acting skills daily." On a parting note, we ask him about his family and he says, "They are my biggest support. They kept encouraging me through my struggle period. My family plays a pivotal role in my life and I keep taking feedback from them for my work. My family is now proud of me."
