Anupama back to Shah house , at Baa's feet !
21 years of Mujhse Shaadi Karogi
Maan was still in the process of registering all that had been volleyed his way. He sat down at the nearest couch holding his head with both hands as if to gather all the information. His head was reeling , all the shadows from the past had made an re entry and he was busy re assessing everything, all the events. Her father never let her meet him; he was thrown off unceremoniously from the grounds of the Handa mansion when he tried making a contact with his beloved.
"Get the hell out of my daughter's life, you have ruined it enough, i knew she would come back to me since she is used to the riches and you can give her nothing. Don't ever try to contact her or I'll make sure that you are put to jail for all your life" her father had bellowed.
Maan had felt so helpless, there was anguish but he dared not to spill it out since he was nothing, no one somebody with no power , no money. Mohinder Handa in the long run had taught him the biggest lesson of his life i.e. if you want to rule the world make sure you are richer than the richest and soon power would follow and everyone will kiss your feet. he had left the grounds that day with a determination to make a difference and never to return. but whenever he had flashes from the past coming back while he was busy scaling heights it was always about Geet. Somewhere she was driving her towards his goal, to excel over all others. he never could hate her. He had loved her with all his life, the woman after all had seemed so genuine and trapped. at least that was his first impression of her.
past
While Geet looked into the deep recesses of this dark dangerous yet amazingly attractive man, son of the great Aditya Narain Jain continued, rather slurred,
"You have to know this Geet, this guy actually dreams about excelling over your father, the ultimate indispensable bos..."
He had only been halfway when geet cut in,
"No one's indispensable, not even my father. i know he is a giant but aren't there always a knight waiting in the line to take things over and bring in a change . Am sure Mr. Khurana has had a thought about it" and she smiled.
She dazzled rather, would be the right way to put it. at once Maan's heart was racing and the beauty that was standing a mere few feet away he couldn't help but admire her intelligence. She had very swiftly rebuffed the attempt of Mr. Rahul a** Jain (as he called him) to insult and demean him amidst his high class friends. After all he had brought Maan to the party as one of his clowns, of whom he could make fun off and feel better about, rather superior about himself. All the while Maan stood silent and gritted his teeth while the guy went on and on about Maan, insulting him for having such lofty dreams in spite of being from the drains. Maan had ignored, endured all the sneers, nasty jibes and stood still as a tomb until Geet entered. He had been petrified after he had known that she was the daughter of the very man he looked up to in his life and this Rahul was hell bent upon ruining his first impression. He had known that Mr. Handa was at the party and somewhere he wanted to meet the guy in person. Though he was only a manager in Aditya Jain's office yet he dreamt of ruling the world. He was in fact doing okay for himself as the senior Jain had grown fond and then fonder of him and promised to place him on a respectable position with an important project to head. He even promised to teach him the nitty gritty's of business that would help him in the long run which did not go down too well with Jain's good for nothing son and hence he invited Maan to be his special guest at the party so that he could inflict insult upon him and hurt his ego so that he never ever dares to dream big again. But Maan being Maan kept his cool and greeted the lady. When she looked up with her doe eyes his heart skipped a beat. "Wow" his mind had chimed but what all came out was "hello".
As if there had been electricity in the air or some strange karmic connection when their eyes met, a shiver ran down Geet's spine while Maan's heart felt something that he had never before felt, 'contentment'. As if his mind was screaming 'this is it, she is the one'. But the lovely moment was broken by who else but Rahul a** Jain and he bellowed rather did a public dissection of Maan who did not come in from the family of blue bloods only to be booed by the princess of their land.
Geet looked on in Maan's direction as if beckoning him for some support; "yeah i have taken a stock of it all, i know what am chasing" he chipped in and while he said those words his eyes never left Geet's. He looked straight into her eyes, as if trying to strip her soul to him while she bored into his to gauge his intensions. He seemed to her a fine fellow, with great looks but something in him, his demeanor told her that her life's gonna change forever after tonight and so it did.
present
"how" Maan sounded hoarse and the words came in slow whisper.
i think this is the time when Geet should come in and tell you but I don't want her relive her days of horror all over gain so i'll pour it out to you. Dev said.
"Wait, i want to know it from my wife since it's our personal matter" Maan said while he got up and went towards his wardrobe. in less than fifteen minutes he was dressed and was off in his Porsche towards Geet's apartment. Dev had given him the address.
All the while he zoomed along the city the one disturbing thought that plagued his mind is, her father had inflicted a deathly blow upon her. Her father whom she trusted worshipped all her life. She never dared defy nay of the rules set by him neither did she ever go against his wishes. In fact from what little Maan had seen of the old man he adored his daughter, doted on her yet when he had first met her she had seemed so empty, desolate and trapped. Somewhere she was smothered by the love that her father heaved her with and burden of expectations were far heavier. Mohinder handa always dreamt of making his daughter a successful businesswoman to whom all will turn to, he had wanted her to scale the peaks of success unknown to the world. Geet tried her level best to keep up yet she was somewhere not happy. Maan always felt that infact during one of their conversations he had mentioned it to Geet and that reminded him how the two of them had gotten talking at the party.
Past
"Your father started teaching about the nitty gritty of business since you were only 3! Are you kidding me!" Maan stood all perplexed. The sort of information was not only usual but shocking.
Geet nodded with a solemn expression. "My father had none to turn to, my mother her deserted him and me and eloped with her fancy boyfriend when I was all of one. He hired Daijaan to take care of me and my father being my father didn't actually know what to talk about, to a one year old toddler so he would usually ramble about his days events, stock markets, take overs and all. Hence I have been learning about business for quite some time. So what my college teaches is already known to me hence I have plenty of time to attend parties" she shrugged but the sad smile that lingered on her face didn't miss Maan.
"Do you miss life?" he implored.
"Huh" came her puzzled reply
"Yeah, you know life! That's like friends, playing pranks, getting sloshed, shouting your lungs out for no reason, going to a pub and dancing even when you have two left feet and all the crazy stuff that frien''.." he hadn't completed when Geet said, "am not allowed to , I mean my father is very protective about me. He gets paranoid when am not at home so usually I head straight home after college, he is very protective about me." She smiled while she shared this piece of info with Maan and his heart skipped too many beats to count, if any more, he would have definitely suffered from a seizure. "But that doesn't mean I don't have any life beyond my father. I have friends, not too many" she was quick to add. "my best friend happens to be even our family friend, Dev he is a pal, I hang out with him and Meera, she is my classmate in fact she is very close to me so is dev. They are my true friends" she had replied nonchalantly.
From whatever little information Maan got to squeeze out of Geet he had only one impression of Mr. Handa that he was a doting dad, little too overprotective about his daughter, why shouldn't he; after all a daughter as beautiful and witty as Geet could give any dad even of his stature sleepless nights. He smiled at his own thought and continued marveling the beauty.
Present
He was jarred out of his sweet thoughts by the sudden honking of the horns. He stood at the last signal, before Geet's apartment lost in thoughts. He restarted the engine, gathering his thoughts and enough courage to confront his beloved he led his car through the gates of her building.
He stood at the foyer staring at the building wide eyed. He seemed still as a stone but within it was a whirlpool of emotions. He was actually rehearsing his opening speech. His palms were wet due to perspiration while his entire body was drenched in cold sweat. He still stood there when his phone suddenly started buzzing. It was an unknown number may be one of his associates calling to inform about some emergency. 'Darn!' he muttered under his breath and picked it up and Dev's voice rang across the receiver, "hell Maan what the hell are you waiting for? Haven't you waited enough? Or are you nervous that my friend might pounce upon you the moment she sees you at her door and slobber you with her wet kisses and wet your expensive Armani suit with her salty tears." He joked.
Maan gritted his teeth while his jaw tightened, "are you tailing me? And if that was a joke it was a lousy one"
"Oh c'm'.."Dev had been cut off by a click shut of the phone by Maan.
He now strode confidently across the foyer into the lobby and then subsequently into the lift, to the ninth floor.
She was still seated at the floor, staring into space. Her eyes looked bruised, red bloodshot as if she had been crying for hours. The floor seemed cold to her, the state of her being and the atmosphere dead, silent only the wind bellowed and the wind chime danced to its tune. When the bell rang first she was too disoriented or lost to comprehend, in fact she thought it was the figment of her imagination. Who would come to visit her, not her father he must be fast asleep dreaming about figures, dev, no he and Meera have their world they are happy. She mentally ticked off her possible visitors while Maan stood anxious at the door. The suddenly the door clicked open.
Geet stood there her hair disheveled, eyes swollen, clothes in a disarray and she had an expression of shock written all across her face that seemed palid.
Maan's heart went out to her and in a second he was by her side while she clutched on to him as her only hope in a devastating storm that had turned her life upside down and started sobbing, her sobs escalated to cries of agony as if she was trying to tell him about all the agony and pain that she had to endure all the while he was busy sulking. How wrong he had been. He soothed her with his hand running up and down her forehead.
