The Ship, Vadhera Voyage landed at the pier, the deep blue water finally calm once again. Virat held the exhausted Maanvi by the shoulders and helped her get down, slowly, not moving away from her for a second. Once off the boat, Virat noticed a middle aged woman dressed in a cotton sari standing smiling at them. He knew her. She was Pratibha Das, the minister in charge of Chandia when the Earl was away. Virat remembered her clearly. Whenever Vijay Singh was not able to attend meetings or events in Chandia, she would always go as an acting caretaker of the Island. Before, she had helped his grandfather a lot and now she was here to help Maanvi. Virat smiled back. He liked her. Pratibha Das was quite strict and orderly when it came to things but behind that, she was simple and caring. In fact, when Virat was younger and he had stayed in Chandia for a few days with his grandfather, it was Pratibha who used to make sure he was taken care of and he'd always addressed her as Bua. Though Virat hadn't seen her for a few years, he still remembered her very clearly.
Behind her were two heavily built men, their muscles bulging from their black shirts, clearly they were bodyguards. Maanvi yawned, rubbing her eyes a little before looking up at Virat who still had his arm over her. She looked across to the woman and the bodyguards before standing up straight and facing Virat, wondering who the woman was. "This is Pratibha Das, the Minister of Chandia and someone who took very good care of me when I was younger. She's the one who takes care of the Island when Dadaji was away and now she'll help you take care of it."
"How are you Virat?" She asked, stepping forward a little. "I'm sorry that I wasn't able to be there when Vijay Singh passed away. Things got so busy that I wasn't able to but I made sure we held a little prayer in the memory of him here in Chandia."
Virat smiled. "I'm fine, Bua." He replied. "And don't worry, I'm sure Dadaji wouldn't mind." He joked before sighing. "Anyway, you tell me… how are you?"
"I too am fine." She glanced at Maanvi, walking forward and placed her hands over Maanvi's and moved her towards her. "Maanvi Vadhera." She said with a smile. "I didn't know Virat would marry someone as beautiful as you." Maanvi smiled, her cheeks tinting a light red. "Anyway, so finally you're now the Duchess and the way Virat looks at you and cares for you, I think you'll be the perfect Duchess, after all Virat grew up here, so he would know who would be able to care for the people."
Maanvi struggled to think what to say. "Ji… M-M'am.." She stuttered, biting her lip from the nerves.
Pratibha smiled. "Beta, just call me Bua, besides that's what Virat calls me. And please you don't need to get nervous around me, after all I'm the one that will help you along the way, so you don't worry, okay?" Maanvi nodded. "It's quite late by now, so you'll be taken to Chandia Palace, make sure you get some sleep, tomorrow you have a big day." She said before turning to one of her bodyguards. "Please take Virat and Maanvi there, I'll meet up with them in the morning." The guard nodded before asking the couple to follow him into the car. Virat said goodbye to Pratibha before taking his hands back into Maanvi's and walking towards the car. He opened the door for her as she sat down, before getting in.
It had taken a few minutes to get to the Palace. The Chandian Palace was significantly smaller than the Vadhera Palace in Chandrilasia. But it was, without doubt, even older than the latter. The stonework was a few centuries old, with a few corners starting to crumble away. As the car entered the driveway, there was a huge oak tree in the middle, the leaves fresh and bright green. Virat smiled reminiscing about his childhood memories. This was the very same tree that he would run around in, annoying the carers that were looking after him. Though the Chandian Palace was smaller, Virat loved this more than the Vadhera Palace. Unlike the latter, which was built by his ancestors, the Chandian Palace was built many, many centuries ago by people who had appointed themselves as the Protectors of the Island, it wasn't until it came into the Vadhera's power, that it was taken over by them. But still, the history and stories behind it were so rich that his ancestors didn't feel like they wanted to change anything about it. It was one of the reasons why there had been no name change, simply christened the Chandian Palace or the Palace of Chandia, because for them, it belonged to the Island and not a particular member.
They walked along the old, wearing floor, their feet tip-tapping along. There was a huge glass chandelier placed in the main hallway, illuminating light onto the brown wooden walls. There was a large bookcase or rather, many bookcases, completely packed on one side of the wall. Many of them contained deep and rich histories about the Island, as well as information about many other countries. The main hallway was one of the more communal area, where even the members of the public was allowed to come and visit. In fact, the fact that half of the Palace was opened to the public, meant many tourists visited Chandia for this very reason. Every so often, copies of old books were made and sold to people who wanted them whilst the originals were kept safe behind safes and locks. The main hallway descended into the large Sun Room, where unlike the other rooms, it was completely bright. There were think curtains placed around the room, blocking the raw sunlight from getting into the room whilst still keeping it warm and full of light. This room was for those who visited the Palace and perhaps wanted to rest; the room filled with chairs and sofas.
Virat held Maanvi's hand tight and took her along the darkened hallway, through a room descended from the main hallway earlier. From here, the section was completely closed off from the public, with only the members of the Royal family, special guests and care takers were allowed to come through. He remembered this place particularly well, the way he used to run around through the halls as his nanny used to run after him, trying to calm him down. He smiled, shaking his head at his younger self's naughtiness.
"What are you thinking about?" Maanvi asked.
He shook his head, smiling. "I was just thinking about when I was younger. I used to stay here and seriously, I used to annoy and mess around with my carers every time."
Maanvi pretended to gasp. "Virat? You were that mischievous?" He nodded, shyly. "But you haven't changed. You're still the same Virat, just like you were before."
"Except this time, I'm a lot more open with my mischievousness." He replied, smirking. He moved closer towards her, brushing his fingers through her hair.
She moved anyway, shying. "Virat!" She began to yawn, covering her mouth with the back of her hand. "God, I don't know why I'm feeling so tired."
He shook his head, smiling. "Because you're sleepy. And it's late." He held her hand and walked through the end of the hallway where a wooden oak door was placed. Virat rubbed his fingers across the surface of the door. This was the room that he had stayed in whenever he came to Chandia. It had been a few years since the last visit and already he wondered whether anything had changed. "This was my room…" He spoke. "Our room." He corrected before opening the door and stepping inside. Nothing much had changed about the room. It was still the dark blue carpeted, white walled room. It was much smaller than the room in Vadhera Palace but yet just as comfortable. Virat yawned, arching his back and arm back as he did. "It's pretty late, let's sleep." He spoke, rubbing his eyes. A few minutes later, both had changed into their sleeping wear and got into bed. It had been a long day, from the coronation and the journey to Chandia and where both feeling extremely tired. Virat turned slightly, holding Maanvi's back in his arms as she slept, almost as if he was protecting her from the dark night. He held her close, as she lay comfortably in his arms, just where she felt like she belonged.
Across the Seas, Shiv Agnihotri laid in bed, putting up the finishing touches to his presentation. For the past few months, he had been living America and working under a big business branch. As much as he loved the new change in environment, deep down he still missed the essence that was Chandrilasia. He missed the way he was woken up by the annoying cockerels that lived down the road, he missed the way the sound of the sea could be heard from his bedroom. But most of all, he missed Maanvi. It had been ages since he last saw her, the last being when he had arrived at the Vadhera Palace to tell her goodbye. She had been angry with him, not wanting him to leave when things were so solemn at home. She had always been stubborn and this time was no different. It had taken him a couple of weeks after he left to pacify her. He sighed, slightly sad that he was not able to attend the coronation. Though Maanvi always had a smile on her face, he knew that she was upset with him, but the situation was such that he was not able to. He was coming home soon, and would be working in Chandrilasia, at a position everyone would be extremely happy for.
Shiv glanced at the bottom of his laptop screen to view the time. It was nearly midnight, and most of the Americans of Washington were asleep. He arched his head back against the wall, tapping his fingers on the edge of his laptop. He couldn't sleep. There was just too much on his mind. He glanced back at the time again and wondered what Maanvi must have been doing right now. He calculated quickly, "It must be around nine o'clock in the morning in Chandrilasia right now..." He thought. "Would Maanvi even be awake?" He bit his lip, having the urge to call her right away. He knew her extremely well, more than she even knew herself. He remembered how she would always get up late, and sometimes it took him to wake her up. He smiled, remembering how he had pranked her by throwing ice cold water over her whilst she slept. Yeah, she hadn't forgiven him for that but neither did she forget that, he was always scared for the pranks that she would do on him. But over the past few months, since she married Virat, she had completely changed. His childish best friend was now a mature Duchess. Though she was still nave and mischievous at heart, she now knew when to do things and how to do things, to the point where she got up early and looked after everyone, even more so than earlier. And he couldn't be any more pleased.
He bit his lip again, wondering whether he should call her. Shiv reached for the phone, placing his fingers over the keys and began to wonder again. He sighed, before deciding to call her. He pressed down the numbers and waited for it to ring. It had taken a few moments until someone finally picked up the phone.
Virat rubbed his eyes open, and turned sideways to see Maanvi still sleeping soundly. He smiled, carefully moving slightly, trying not to wake her up. He glanced at her face, she was completely at peace. Her eyes were closed, and it looked like she was having a nice dream. He slowly moved his arm from under her and got up, stretching his arms. He looked at the clock and realised that it was nearly nine. He wondered whether he should wake her up before shaking his head and going into the bathroom to take a quick shower and freshen up. A few minutes later, Virat emerged from the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his lower body. With a smaller towel, he dried the water from his hair and wiped his face. He peered over his wife who was still sleeping soundly. He smiled. He loved watching her sleep; it was like she was his sleeping beauty.
Just then, the phone started to ring, and he wondered who was making a call at this time in the morning. It wasn't exactly early but nor was it a time where someone would have called them. He had already called home the night before to tell them that they had arrived, and Swamini had even told him that they'd call when the events were over, so that they didn't need to worry. Virat noticed Maanvi turn left and right in the bed, getting restless as the sound of the ringtone became louder. Without a second thought, Virat found the ringing phone and answered it.
"Hello?" He asked, still wondering who it was. He placed the smaller towel onto the side table and sat on the edge of the bed, careful not to wake Maanvi up.
"Virat?"
Virat perked up at the sound of the voice. "Shiv?" He asked, his lips automatically turning into a smile. "How are you? How's things in America?"
"I'm fine and things are good here. I'm leaving for Chandrilasia in a few hours so I thought I'd call Maanvi. I thought she must be awake at this time, right? Anyway, you tell me how are things with you? I mean, as the husband of the Duchess." Shiv chuckled, turning his laptop off and placing it on the bedside table.
"Oh so that's why you wanted to speak to Maanvi! But I'm sorry, right now she's sleeping, we arrived in Chandia quite late last night and she wasn't feeling well." Instantly, Shiv became worried about Maanvi. He sat up, frantically concerned about how she was.
"What? How is she? Is she okay?"
"Yeah dude, she's fine. Actually, I think she got a little sea sick because of the ship ride but don't worry, she's fine now."
"Thank God!" Shiv sighed. "I thought something bad had happened."
Virat smiled. "You care about her that much, huh?"
"That I do. You know, since childhood we both had taken care of each other. She took care of me and I took care of her. We were inseparable. She was always so crazy and always says things that sometimes don't make sense." Virat laughed lightly. "But she always made you smile. She says things that would just make your day. And you know what? I'm so glad that she has finally found someone that she loves dearly."
"She talks to you about me?"
"Yes. I called her before the coronation and we ended up talking about you and how much she loved you. If there's one thing that Maanvi is good at, then that is truly loving someone. Once she's given her heart, she'll never accept another well, unless it's something special." He smiled, remembering a past event. "When we were younger, she had this doll that she used to love, she used to dress it up everyday and take it everywhere with her. She never used to let it out of her sight. But one day, that doll broke and that day, Maanvi cried so much that nothing would calm her down." Virat listened intently. "Even when her parents bought her new dolls, she wouldn't accept them, she would pull a tantrum saying the doll wasn't the same. But one day, I saw this doll just sitting there in the corner. I didn't have much money but I remember running home and getting all the pocket money I had saved and bought that doll. I didn't even know whether she would like it or not but I hoped she did."
"And did she?"
"Yeah. As soon as I brought the doll over, she instantly took it and loved it as much as she loved the broken doll."
Virat smiled, glancing back at the sleeping Maanvi. "I didn't know she used to be like that in childhood."
Shiv laughed. "She still is like that. That's why I said, if she loves someone, she'll love them wholeheartedly but some people just share an unbreakable presence in her heart. Just like you do."
"Thank you." Virat said, sighing a little.
"For what?"
"If it wasn't for you, that day I wouldn't have made that decision to marry Maanvi there and then. So if I do have the most amazing wife in the world, it's probably because of you. Seriously, I wouldn't know how much or even how to thank you."
Shiv smiled, slightly embarrassed. "Okay dude, let's not get sappy any further otherwise Maanvi will be stuck between Dostana 2.0." Virat laughed, shaking his head at Shiv's comment. "Anyway, it's nearly midnight here and I should probably get some sleep. Tell Maanvi, next time I speak to her it'll be when I'm in Chandrilasia. And tell her to keep well!"
"Haha, I'll tell her. Okay, bye." Virat replied, before adding, "Bye honey, sleep tight."
"Goodnight, sweetheart. I love you." Shiv joked.
"I love you too, darling." Virat replied before falling into a fit of laughter as Shiv turned the phone off and went to sleep. Virat shook his head, trying to stop laughing before thinking back at the conversation he just had.
"Who do you love?!" Maanvi yelled out just as soon as Virat had ended the call. She jumped out of bed, rubbing her head in anger. Virat stood in front of her not knowing what to say, on one hand he was slightly scared of the way she just got angry but on the other hand he wanted to laugh about his and Shiv's conversation. "Virat! Tell me!?" She growled. "Are you cheating on me?!" He instantly shook his head and tried to speak but she got there before him. "Look Virat, just tell me the truth! Don't lie to me, are you cheating on me?!" She began to cry, tears welling up in her eyes.
"Maanvi…" He said, slightly astonished. He rushed over to her to wipe the tears from her eyes but she moved him away. "Maanvi? What's wrong?"
She looked at him in anger. "What's wrong?! My husband is cheating on me with some girl and he tells her 'I love you' and you're asking me what's wrong?!"
"Yes." He said before quickly shaking his head. "I mean no." He hissed. "I mean, why are you over acting?" She gave him a look and he instantly corrected himself. "I mean…" He sighed. "Maanvi don't worry! I'm not cheating on you."
She sniffed, wiping the tears from her eyes. "Then who did you say I love you to?"
"Shiv." He answered, leading to a glare from Maanvi.
"Shiv?! Behind my back, you are cheating on me with my best friend? Don't you love me any more?"
"No, wait. What?" He shook his head. "Maanvi, I was just joking with Shiv! We were talking about how much you love me and then he said we shouldn't be sappy otherwise you'll think we were becoming the next Dostana," He said with one breath before mumbling, "and I don't know how he knew that was going to happen, but believe me Maanvi it was a joke!" He cupped her cheeks and looked into her eyes. "I promise, I'm not cheating on you and no, me and Shiv are not in a relationship together. I love you and I will always love you."
She sniffed. "Promise?"
"I promise."
Maanvi smiled as Virat wiped the remaining tears from her eyes. "Okay." She instantly smiled, as if she had forgotten the argument they had just had. "I love you so much Virat!" She said out loud, almost as if she wanted to scream it out. She hugged him tight before pulling away and looking up at him. "Okay, I need to go bathroom!" She jumped up and down feeling restless with the feeling to urinate. He looked at her before telling her to go quickly. Without a second delay, Maanvi ran to the bathroom to ease herself whilst Virat shook his head trying to wonder what just happened.
He sighed, thankful that the argument or whatever they just had was over. "What just happened?" He whispered to himself before falling onto the bed in a sigh.
