"Why do you think Margaret Hale refused to marry Henry Lennox?"
Khushi heard Payal sigh loudly. Khushi's cellphone lay next to her feet with speaker on as she rubbed off chipped nail polish with a strongly smelling remover.
"Should I go for red or peach?" Khushi wondered aloud, her eyes glancing at the pack of nail enamels in a small plastic make up bag.
"Peach or mauve or beige; they are all classy colors." Payal replied in a monotone. "Why do you think she refused to marry Lennox?" She continued the conversation about Margaret and Lennox.
"That's the thing, I don't understand why Payal. He is rich, handsome, is a relative and practically the best catch in all of London for Margaret. She knows him to be a good man and a very good friend. I just don't understand her reason for rejecting his proposal that's all." Khushi was trying to wrap her head around the said fact. Why would a middle class girl refuse to marry a man of stature who would indeed keep her happy for the rest of her life? Wasn't happiness the ultimate goal in life?
No, it isn't. She heard an inner voice scowl at her. You said something else in the interview, remember? The voice reminded her pettily. She frowned.
"I think she didn't believe she would be happy with him. She was a smart woman whose expectations from life were more than simple materialistic pleasures which wouldn't be possible for a man like Lennox." Payal answered. There was rustling of silk on the other end which perked Khushi's ears.
"What are you doing Payal?"
Ten seconds of rustling later, Payal answered. "I bought about a dozen new saris last evening so that I am aptly dressed for all the functions that are lined up for next two months." Payal's voice was easy and had an edge of carefree laced to it. Khushi couldn't breathe. She remembered long shopping hours before marriage when her mother insisting on buying three dozen new saris for her daughter just so she would fit right in. Apparently they had a different definition of "aptness". Khushi bit her lip and shook her head. The brush tinged with peach colored nail polish shook and slashed a line across her right toe.
"Are you there Khushi?" She snapped back to reality when she heard Payal call her name.
Khushi snapped out of her reverie. "I was just thinking about possible reason for Margaret's decision." She lied smoothly. "If I was in her place I would have accepted the proposal easily." Khushi was always about practicality. Her exhaustion and the task of painting her nails were allowing her to focus on conversation with Payal though her mind started to weave alternate theories at the same time.
Payal chuckled on the other end. "I doubt it," she said confidently.
Khushi's hands stilled. "Why do you say that?" She asked, surprised.
Payal didn't answer immediately. When silence seemed stretch longer, she whispered. "I have a feeling the answer will come to you shortly."
"Do you know something I don't?" Khushi asked, annoyance creeping in her voice. It wouldn't be first for her mother to discuss things with Payal first and get Payal to break it to her. She didn't understand this roundabout way of communication but at times, Garima and Shashi handled Khushi with kid gloves.
"Margaret didn't feel anything more than basic affection for Lennox, Payal. She didn't feel invigorated in his presence nor did she feel…alive. She felt coddled, cherished and even loved but she couldn't reciprocate all that and more towards Lennox. She didn't believe that she would make him happy." Payal said softly.
"She could have learned over time, wouldn't she?" Khushi's voice was barely above whisper. Payal wondered who they were talking about now.
"Not Margaret, no." Payal was sure.
But you are learning! Khushi wanted to scream. However when she replied, her voice was clammy.
"She is an idiot." Khushi's voice was hoarse.
There was silence for several moments before she spoke. "Is this about Shyam?"
Khushi wondered when her life got so…complicated.
