I'd love to cook for Gordon Ramsay: Masterchef winner

Season 3 of Masterchef Kitchen Ke Superstars saw Delhi boy Ripudaman Handa, one of the youngest contestants, walk away with the coveted title, prize money of Rs 1 crore and a chance to write his own cookery book.

In an interview with TOI, Ripudaman talks to us about his experience in MasterChef, hisimpressive win, and more...

How does it feel to be India's first MasterChef winner? It's an amazing feeling. I am very happy that I have made my parents and my family proud. They said they have forgiven all my mistakes and I am really feeling on top of the world. Everyone around me is saying choti umar mein bahut bada dhamaka kar diya hai. I am thankful to the people who have supported me, myfriends and to my fans. I think my luck, hard work and struggle played an important part in my win.

From gym trainer to MasterChef, what has the journey been like for you? My journey has been full of challenges but it has been the most beautiful one ever. Whatever good or bad that has happened in the Masterchef Kitchen now all seems to be truly worth it as I am a Masterchef winner. Each one of us had so much fun. I particularly remember during our Chandigarh trip I never slept in night, I went to Gurdwara and practiced making round chapattis. And I am happy that I've made so many good friends along the way.

What made you decide to try out for the contest? I have always listened to others all my life but this time I just did what I felt like doing. In fact I didn't inform my parents before entering this competition. So I am happy that the risk was worth it. Masterchef gave me a big platform to prove myself and I have changed as a person. I've become confident. Now, I just do my work and don't think about what others think about me.

What do you think worked for you in the competition? I don't know because I didn't come here to compete. I just tried to make good food every time I cooked. I've never gone through any recipe book to make any dish, I have always followed my heart. Before entering into any task, I always gave 10 minutes to think about my dish and rest 50 minutes went into the making of the dish. I think this has worked for me and the judges liked this about me.

One dish that you struggled a lot while making? It will be Rotis. Like, I said I faced a lot of difficulties while making Rotis. But as I said, I practiced a lot during the Chandigarh trip and finally learnt it.

Which was the toughest task? When I made Ice creams in Ahmedabad and also had to sell it. It was like my first job and I scored 145.

What is the worst kitchen disaster that you faced on the show? I think it was when I made Kadi Chawal, I tried to make it in a different way and gave it a new shape. It was not the usual Kadi chawal and the judges didn't like it (Laughs).

Who inspired you to take part in Masterchef? It would definitely be Chef Sanjeev Kapoorbut I would like to add that it was my brother and my sister-in-law who supported me throughout my journey. Whether it was mentally, emotionally or financially they were always there.

If you could invite anyone special to dinner, who would it be? It is my dream to cook forGordan Ramsay. I don't know if he will ever come to India but if he comes and I get a chance, I would definitely like to make a good Indian dish for him.

What do you plan to do with the winning amount? Your future plans? Honestly, I haven't thought about it. I have given the amount to my mom. I want to brush up my culinary skills so I will go abroad for studies in food industry or I will do food research in India. I also plan to open a gym on my name.

The best thing i like about Ripu is his humble and focussed attitude. Though everyone in the Top 10 said Ripu is the weakest contestant, Ripu didnt let it bother him. Also when day after day he was immensely praised by judges, he didnt let it go to his head. He had respect for everyone. The cutest thing is that he gave all the prize money to his parents, such a mama's boy.
Hope he continues with the same attitude, all is life.
